  • In an entrained flow coal gasifier, predicting the reaction behavior of pulverized coal particles requires detailed information on devolatilization, char gasification, gaseous reactions, turbulence and heat transfer. Among the input parameters, the rate of devolatilization and the composition of volatile species are difficult to determine by experiments due to a high pressure (~40 bar) and temperature (${\sim}1500^{\circ}C$). This study investigates the effect of devolatilization models on the reaction and heat transfer characteristics of a 300 MWe Shell coal gasifier. A simplified devolatilization model and advanced model based on Flashchain were evaluated, which had different volatiles composition and devolatilization rates. It was found that the tested models produce similar flow and reaction trends, but the simplified model slightly over-predict the temperature and wall heat flux near the coal inlets.

  • In this work, an experimental study of the gasification on wood was carried out in downdraft type fixed bed Gasifier attached with 10 kW duel fuel diesel engine. The main objective of the study was to use wood as the biomass fuel for downdraft Gasifier and to evaluate the operating parameter of gasifier unit to predict its performance in terms of gas yield and cold gas efficiency. The influence of different biomass on fuel consumption rate, gas yield and cold gas efficiency was studied. Composition of producer gas was also detected for measuring the lower heating value of producer gas to select the feed stock so that optimum performance in the existing gasifier unit can be achieved. Under the experimental conditions, Lower heating value, of producer gas, cold gas efficiency and gas yields, using wood as a feed stock, are $4.85MJ/m^3$, 46.57% and $0.519m^3/kg$.

  • In the Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC), the stability of the gasifier has strong influences on the rest of the plant as it supplies the feed to the rest of the power generation system. In order to ensure a safe and stable operation of the entrained-flow gasifier and for protection of the gasifier wall from the high internal temperature, the solid slag layer thickness should be regulated tightly but its control is hampered by the lack of on-line measurement for it. In this study, a previously published dynamic simulation model of a Shell-type gasifier is reproduced and two different linear model predictive control strategies are simulated and compared for multivariable control of the entrained-flow gasifier. The first approach is to control a measured secondary variable as a surrogate to the unmeasured slag thickness. The control results of this approach depended strongly on the unmeasured disturbance type. In other words, the slag thickness could not be controlled tightly for a certain type of unmeasured disturbance. The second approach is to estimate the unmeasured slag thickness through the Kalman filter and to use the estimate to predict and control the slag thickness directly. Using the second approach, the slag thickness could be controlled well regardless of the type of unmeasured disturbances.

  • Oxy-gasification or oxygen-blown gasification, enables a clean and efficient use of coal and opens a promising way to CO2 capture. The coal gasification process of a slurry feed type, entrained-flow coal gasifier was numerically predicted in this paper. The purposes of this study are to develop an evaluation technique for design and performance optimization of coal gasifiers using a numerical simulation technique, and to confirm the validity of the model. By dividing the complicated coal gasification process into several simplified stages such as slurry evaporation, coal devolatilization, mixture fraction model and two-phase reactions coupled with turbulent flow and two-phase heat transfer, a comprehensive numerical model was constructed to simulate the coal gasification process. The influence of turbulence on the gas properties was taken into account by the PDF (Probability Density Function) model. A numerical simulation with the coal gasification model is performed on the Conoco-Philips type gasifier for IGCC plant. Gas temperature distribution and product gas composition are also presented. Numerical computations were performed to assess the effect of variation in oxygen to coal ratio and steam to coal ratio on reactive flow field. The concentration of major products, CO and H2 were calculated with varying oxygen to coal ratio (0.2-1.5) and steam to coal ratio(0.3-0.7). To verify the validity of predictions, predicted values of CO and H2 concentrations at the exit of the gasifier were compared with previous work of the same geometry and operating points. Predictions showed that the CO and H2 concentration increased gradually to its maximum value with increasing oxygen-coal and hydrogen-coal ratio and decreased. When the oxygen-coal ratio was between 0.8 and 1.2, and the steam-coal ratio was between 0.4 and 0.5, high values of CO and H2 were obtained. This study also deals with the comparison of CFD (Computational Flow Dynamics) and STATNJAN results which consider the objective gasifier as chemical equilibrium to know the effect of flow on objective gasifier compared to equilibrium. This study makes objective gasifier divided into a few ranges to study the evolution of the gasification locally. By this method, we can find that there are characteristics in the each scope divided.

  • In the study, the effect of steam injection on syngas productivity was investigated under the constant operating conditions of gasifier oxygen load while the coal feed was fixed and the steam injection flow rate is changed in Taean IGCC plant. The maximum syngas average productivity was found to be at 80 % and 90 % of gasifier oxygen loads with the steam injection flow rate of 0.14 kg/s and 0.15 kg/s per coal burner. Through this study, the syngas productivity was changed by adjusting the steam injection amount and as the steam injection flow rate increased, the syngas productivity increased and then decreased again. The syngas productivity can be increased only by steam injection without supplying additional coal and it is considered that the syngas productivity has different characteristics depending on coal type. Thus it is recommended to operate the gasifier using Carbo-One coal with the steam injection flow rate of about 0.14 kg/s per coal burner when the gasifier oxygen load is 80 % ~ 90 %.

  • Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) has developed a compact coal-gasification system to accumulate our experiment skills. The combustion furnace for residual oil was modified as a small size coal gasifier. Recently, coal feeding system was also upgraded to control coal feed rate more accurately. Our research group has conducted several experiments to find out the effect of $O_2$/coal ratio on the cold gas efficiency. Furthermore, the effect of $N_2$/coal ratio on the transport characteristics was also studied. According to the calculation of heat and mass balance, the cold gas efficiency was estimated to the maximum at $O_2$/coal ratio of around 0.73. But small size gasifier such as ours required higher value of $O_2$/coal ratio than that of the theoretical estimation. On the optimal $N_2$/coal ratio, we noticed that the coal feed rate was intimately related with the transporting gas pressure and the pipe diameter.

  • KEPRI is developing a Korean type coal-gasification system and the scale is 20 ton/day. Prior to this pilot plant, a 1 ton/day class gasification system will be used for pre-testing of several coal types. This paper introduces the configuration and design conditions of this 1 ton/day class system, presenting the gas/coal ratio, oxygen/coal ratio, cold gas efficiency, CFD analysis of gasifier, and others. The existing combustion furnace for residual oil was retrofitted as a coal gasifier and a vertical and down-flow type burner was manufactured. Ash removal is carried out through a water quencher and a scrubber following the quencher, and the sulfur is removed by adsorption in the activated carbon tower. The gas produced from the gasifier is burned at the flare stack. In this paper, the results of design conditions and initial operation conditions of I ton/day gasification system are compared together.

  • Flow fields, temperature distributions, and particle trajectories in a 2-stage entrained-flow gasifier are calculated using a CFD code, FLUENT. Realizable k-$\xi$ model is used as a turbulent model. Because of swirling flow there appear recirculation regions near the burners. The characteristics of flow fields and temperature distributions in the gasifier are dependent on the swirl number of the system. Mean residence time of the particles in the reductor is inversely proportional to particle size, particle density and swirl number. As the swirl number is increasing, the particles injected from the combustor burners approach the wall near the combustor burners, which prevents the particles from entering the reductor and thus attatching the reductor wall. If the lower combustor burner angle is larger than the higher combustor burner angle for a given swirl number, the particles may move toward the reductor and cause ash/slag deposition problem.

  • A steady-state analysis has been conducted to predict the behavior of the slag layer in the entrained-flow slagging coal gasifier. The analysis takes into consideration the composition dependent slag properties such as density, viscosity, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and temperature of critical viscosity. The amount of added flux to the design coal and the variation of syngas temperature inside the gasifier have been adopted as calculation parameters. The predicted results are the local thickness of the molten and the solid slag layers, and the slag viscosity and the velocity distribution across the molten slag layer along the gasifier wall near the slag tap.

  • The IGCC (Integrated gasification combined cycle) is known for one of the highest efficiency and the lowest emitting coal fueled power generating technologies. As the core technology of this system is the gasifier to make the efficiency and the continuous operation time increase, the research about different coal's gasification has been conducted. Our research group had set-up the coal gasifier for the pilot test to study the effect of different coals-Shenhua and Adaro coal- on gasification characteristics. Gasification conditions like temperature and pressure were controlled at a fixed condition and coal feed rate was also controlled 30 kg/h to retain the constant experimental condition. Through this study we found effects of coal composition and $O_2$/coal ratio on the cold gas efficiency, carbon conversion rate. The compounds of coal like carbon and ash make the performance of gasifier change. And carbon conversion rate was decreased with reduced $O_2$/coal ratio. The optical $O_2$/coal ratio is 0.8 for the highest cold gas efficiency approximately. At those operating conditions, the higher coal has the C/H ratio, the lower syn-gas has the $H_2$/CO ratio.
