High Pressure Spray and Combustion Characteristics of Throttleable Pintle Injector (가변추력 핀틀 분사기의 고압 분무 및 연소특성)

  • The reusable, low-cost launch vehicle development trend in the recent launch vehicle market is being subdivided into several ways, and the throttleable engine is one of them. Plus, several nations have selected methane as a next-generation propellant due to its cleanness. In this research, a throttleable pintle injector using gas methane and liquid oxygen as propellants was developed, followed by its spray and combustion characteristics analysis, including high pressure cold and hot tests. The designed throttleable pintle injector has a double sleeve structure, and its tightness and functionality are confirmed through repetitive atmospheric, high-pressure cold tests, and hot tests. Though some design errors were discovered and a low throttling level was unable to be achieved in the combustion test.

  • Hot-firing tests were performed on the gas generator which is a technology development/demonstration model for a 75 ton-class liquid rocket engine. A heat-sink type combustion chamber was used for initial performance examination of the injector and mixing head. This paper explains not only preparation works for hot-firing tests but also the acquired results such as pressure, temperature distribution, and pressure fluctuation.

  • Constant volume combustion chamber has been designed to investigate diesel spray characteristics with Common-Rail injection system to realize high pressure injection. In this study, two methods of measurements, Schlieren shadowgraphy and Mie scattering imaging method ate applied experimentally to study spray form and liquid phase zone in high pressure, high temperature conditions. Diesel fuel is injected at the point which ignited mixture gas is completely burned. The effect of injection pressure, injector hole diameter, ambient gas temperature and density are investigated experimentally.

  • In the experimental study of $N_2$ purge cold flow test of impinging(FOOF) injector for determining of instability region, the whistling sound which has a specific frequency is generated. The frequency of whistling is proportional to the gas flow velocity in part of the oxidizer orifice and due to the coupling of the vibrating gas column and the natural frequency of pipe-orifice shape, the discontinuous jumping phenomena arises. The whistling phenomena have no effect on the combustion instability. Compared the damping factor of 1T1L mode with the hot fire test, the instability region of $N_2$ purge cold flow test is very much like that. It means that flow instability by impinging or mixing of jet is the main reason of combustion instability of impinging injector(FOOF) in the hot firing test.

  • Understanding the fundamental characteristics of supersonic hydrogen jets is important for the optimization of combustion in hydrogen engines. Previous studies have used helium as a surrogate gas to characterize the hydrogen jet characteristics due to potential explosion risks of hydrogen. It was based on the similarity of hydrogen and helium jet structures in supersonic conditions that has been confirmed using hole-type injectors and large-cone-angle pintle-type injectors. However, the validity of using helium as a surrogate gas has not been examined for recent small-cone-angle pintle-type injectors applied to direct-injection hydrogen engines, which form a supersonic hollow cone near the nozzle and experience the jet collapse downstream. Differences in the physical properties of hydrogen and helium could alter the jet development characteristics that need to be investigated and understood. This study compares supersonic jet structures of hydrogen and helium injected by a small-cone-angle (50°) pintle-type hydrogen injector and discusses their differences and related mechanisms. Jet penetration length and dispersion angle are measured using the Schlieren imaging method under engine-like injection conditions. As a result, the penetration length of hydrogen and helium jets showed a slight difference of less than 5%, and the dispersion angle showed a maximum of 10% difference according to the injection condition.

  • It is necessary to install the inert gas system(IGS) for preventing fire and explosion in LNGC main diesel engine crankcase besides oil mist detector(OMD) unit with $CO_2$ gas injector. Therefore, to design the liquid nitrogen IGS, analytical work is conducted for predicting the heat input load of liquid nitrogen heater with two-phase stratified flow model. This paper also presents the effects of changes in pipe diameter, saturated pressure, and inclination angle by ship's movement on cryogenic two-phase stratified flows. It is found that the stratified model gives reasonable predictions, and the model is effective to predict the heat input load of liquid nitrogen IGS.

  • During liquid rocket engine combustion, the resulting combustion gas has flow characteristics of high temperature and high velocity. An experimental study was performed to obtain basic data for a flame deflector design that is endurable under such flow characteristics. While the injected-water cools down the combustion plume, temperature and pressure of the plume was measured. As the experiment is being performed, gas temperature was measured using infrared cameras, and the gas temperature data was compared with the temperature data from the sensor in the plume. With the results of this experiment, we were able to obtain applicable temperature data for flame deflector design and predict the performance and structural strength required for installation of water injector.

  • The spray characteristics were investigated to study the effect of shroud air with swirl flow on simplex type fuel injector for gas turbine combustor. The spray tests using PDA(Phase Doppler Anemometry) technique were conducted to compare the performance of simplex atomizer with $0^{\circ},\;40^{\circ},\;50^{\circ}$ swirled-shroud air conditions. In this study. we found that the injector with strong swirled-shroud air has the better atomization Performance compared with weaker swirled and non-swirled conditions.

  • Recently, many researchers have been studied a D.I. diesel engine because of the exhaust gas restriction and fuel consumption performance. It is well known that the fuel injection characteristics are the key factors on the diesel combustion and exhaust emission. In this study, the fuel injection characteristics of 5-hole injector and the combustion characteristics are investigated with the amount of fuel by means of the visualization method and visualization D.I. diesel engine system. As the results of the experiments, the spray pattern of the fuel injection and the diffusion flame of a D.I. diesel engine are clarified. In addition, combustion phenomena with operation conditions such as engine speed and engine load are made clear.
