The fuel and oxidizer mixing process in the shock tube driven section is simulated numerically. The boundary condition is set based on an shock tube experimental condition. The objective is to predict the gas mixing time for experiments. In the experiment, the amount of fuel to be injected is determined in advance. Then, according to duration of fuel injection, 5 cases with the same fuel mass but different fuel mass flow rate are simulated. After fuel is injected into the driven section, the fuel and air will be mixed with each other through convection and diffusion processes. The mixing time is predicted numerically for experiments.
An evaporating diesel spray of a common rail lnjector was visualized by LIEF technique. This technique makes it possible to separate the vapor and liquid phase images. The experiment was conducted in a constant volume vessel to make a high temperature and high pressure condition. Three images(vapor and liquid phase images from LIEF and a liquid phase image from Mie scattering) were taken simultaneously in one spray event. The major experimental parameters are the injection pressure and the ambient gas pressure. Also, a relative SMD distribution in a liquid phase was obtained by the ratio of the intensities of the fluorescence and the Mie scattering. The results show that the injection pressure and the ambient gas pressure have a close relation with the spray development and air-fuel muting process.
The purpose of this investigation is to carry out, the influence factor on the fuel spray characteristics for improve the engine combustion performance and exhaust omission in direct injection type diesel engine. The fuel properties, fuel spray structure and the shape or the piston surface of diesel engine play an important role of engine combustion process and exhaust emission. In order to obtain the effect of using auxiliary chamber and emulsified fuel on the fuel spray characteristics the experiment un conduct with single cylinder direct injection type diesel engine to examine the engine performance and gas emission. The results of this investigation showed that the increase auxiliary chamber volume and emulsified fuel give an effect on the fuel spray characteristics by reduced the concentration of nitric oxide emission in the combustion chamber. Also it can improve the combustion characteristics such as cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise and rate of heat release.

DOS and NaCl aerosol particles were used to determine collection efficiencies of a 2-stage electrostatic wet scrubber with respect to particle size. The DOS and NaCl aerosols have geometric mean diameters of 0.1-3.0 urn, geometric standard deviations of $1.1{\sim}1.8$ and total number concentrations of $450{\sim}2,400\;particles/cm^3$. The tested operating variables for the electrostatic wet scrubber included air velocity and water injection rate. It was shown from the experimental results that particle collection efficiencies increased in the submicron particle size range when different polarities were applied on the water nozzle and corona wire, respectively. This increase in the collection efficiency is attributed to strong electrostatic attraction between the negative water droplets and positive submicron particles. The collection efficiencies also increased when water injection rate was increased or air velocity was decreased. Meanwhile, the pressure drop across the wet scrubber decreased by 90% compared with the existing mechanical wet scrubber. Finally, ammonia gas was used to determine gas removal efficiencies. It was observed that the gas removal efficiencies increased when the air velocity was decreased or the water injection rate was increased.

As environment problem became a worldwide issue, countries are tightening regulations regarding greenhouse gas reduction and improvement of air pollution problems. With these circumstances, one of the renewable energies produced from biomass is getting attention. Bio-ethanol, which is applicable to SI engine, showed a positive effect on the PFI (Port Fuel Injection) type. However, Ethanol has a problem in homogeneous mixture formation because it has high latent heat of vaporization characteristics and in the GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) type, mixture formation is required quickly after fuel injection. Particularly, South Korea is one of the countries with great temperature variation among seasons. With this reason, South Korea supply fuel additive for smooth engine operation during winter. Therefore, experimental study and investigation about application possibility of blending fuel is necessary. This paper demonstrates the spray characteristics by using the CVC direct injection and setting the bio-ethanol blending fuel temperature close to the temperature during each seasons: -7, 25, $35^{\circ}C$. The diameter and the width of the CVC are 86mm and 39mm. High-pressure fuel supply system was used for target injection pressure. High-speed camera was used for spray visualization. The experiment was conducted by setting the injection pressure and ambient pressure according to each temperature of bio-ethanol blending fuel as a parameter. The result of spray visualization experiment demonstrates that as the temperature of the fuel is lower, the atomization quality is lower, and this increase spray penetration and make mixture formation difficult. Injection strategy according to fuel temperature and bio-ethanol blending rate is needed for improving characteristics.
This study focused on comparing macroscopic characteristics of DME and diesel fuel experimentally. DME fuel is one of the most promising alternative fuels because of its superiority in atomization characteristic and clearness in terms of exhaust gas compared with existing fossil fuels. In addition, DME fuel has high cetane number so it could be applied to compression ignition engine. However because DME fuel exists in gas phase at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, and it corrodes rubber parts of fuel line, DME fuel is hard to apply to commercial vehicles. To establish knowledge about DME fuel and furthermore, to develop commercial DME vehicles such as passenger cars, many research have been proceeded steadily. The present study, by comparing spray characteristics of DME fuel to those of diesel fuel, improved atomization characteristics in DME were revealed. Injection quantity measurement and spray visualization experiment were progressed and it was revealed that DME fuel shows small injection quantity than that of diesel fuel and axial development of spray in terms of spray tip penetration decreases when DME fuel was injected.
This paper presents an experimental investigation of the small-break loss-of-coolant accident (SBLOCA) and the loss-of-feedwater accident (LOFW) in a scaled integral test facility of REX-10. REX-10 is a small integral-type PWR in which the coolant flow is driven by natural circulation, and the RCS is pressurized by the steam-gas pressurizer. The postulated accidents of REX-10 include the system depressurization initiated by the break of a nitrogen injection line connected to the steam-gas pressurizer and the complete loss of normal feedwater flow by the malfunction of control systems. The integral effect tests on SBLOCA and LOFW are conducted at the REX-10 Test Facility (RTF), a full-height full-pressure facility with reduced power by 1/50. The SBLOCA experiment is initiated by opening a flow passage out of the pressurizer vessel, and the LOFW experiment begins with the termination of the feedwater supply into the helical-coil steam generator. The experimental results reveal that the RTF can assure sufficient cooldown capability with the simulated PRHRS flow during these DBAs. In particular, the RTF exhibits faster pressurization during the LOFW test when employing the steam-gas pressurizer than the steam pressurizer. This experimental study can provide unique data to validate the thermal-hydraulic analysis code for REX-10.

In this paper, an experimental study is carried out under the operating conditions of low speed and rapid acceleration in order to investigate and improve the response characteristics of a turbocharged diesel engine with radial turbine driven by exhaust gas. A rapid acceleration for investigating the response performance is applied to the fuel-pump rack of the engine from 0-10% to 0-40% in steps of 10%, and accelerating time of 1, 2 and 3 seconds is applied to the engine. Further experiment for improving the low speed torque and acceleration performance is also performed by means of injecting air into the inlet manifold at compressor exit during the period of low speed and application of a rapid acceleration. The effects of air injection on the response performance are represented at subjected engine speed with the changes of response performance factors such as air injection pressure, air injection period, accelerating rate, accelerating time and load. From the experimental results obtained throughout this study, it is shown that air injection into the inlet manifold at compressor exit is closely related to the improvement of low speed and acceleration performance of a turbocharged diesel engine.
To understand the basic the structure of the spray field and to obtain the initial conditions for computational models for shear coaxial twin-fluid injectors. the atomization characteristics under different flow and geometric conditions were examined. The spray characteristics such as SMD, mean axial and radial velocities, Dia. of droplets and volume flux with a P.D.P.A. Water and nitrogen gas under atmospheric conditions were used as a test fluids. The drops produced by shear coaxial injectors continue to disintegrate along the spray axis and decrease their sizes. SMD was the maximum at the spray center of spray and decreased with increasing radial distance. The results of this parametric study showed that SMD decreased with increasing gas injection velocity as well as with decreasing liquid injection mass flow rate, The relative velocity between gas and liquid flow played a significant role resulted in decreasing SMD and in spreading the spray. Recessing the liquid orifice resulted decreasing SMD and a spreading the spray. Recess of liquid orifice by 5.0mm showed best atomization characteristics in this experiment. Although drop diameter changes, shear coaxial injector sprays had constant velocity and exhibited a high degree of radial symmetry.

The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the characteristics of fuel economy combustion and exhaust emissions have been experimentally investigated by a four-cylinder four cycle indirect injection water-cooled and marine diesel engine operating at several loads and speeds. in order to reduce the soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to intake system of the engine a novel diesel soot removal system with a cylinder-type scrubber which has 6 water injectors(A water injector has 144 nozzles in 1.0 mm diameter) is specially designed and manufactured for the experiment system The experiments in this study are performed at the fixed fuel injection timing of $15.3^{\circ}$ BTDC regardless of experimental conditions, The brake specific fuel consumption rate is slightly fluctuated with EGR in the range of experimental conditions, The maximum value of premixed combustion for the rate of heat release is decreased with EGR at engine load 25% and the ignition is slightly delayed with EGR at engine load 100% NOx emissions are markedly decreased with EGR especially at high loads while soot emissions are increased as the EGR rate rises.
