  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the thickness eccentricity on the collapse pressure of a subsea pipeline subjected to external pressure. The collapse behavior of the subsea pipeline containing initial imperfection was evaluated using elastic-plastic finite element (FE) analyses. API 5L X65 and API 5L X80 Pipelines with the thickness eccentricity values between 4~16% were adopted to investigate the plastic collapse under hydrostatic pressure. A parametric study was shown that the plastic collapse pressure decreased when either the thickness eccentricity or the ratio of diameter to thickness increased.

  • Korea Gas Corporation has operated high pressure gas transmission line of about 600 kilometers and, therefore, a series of repair welding processes are required in order to cope with external defects such as dent, gouge, cracking usually due to mechanical attacks. Most of gas pipelines repair processes are performed after completely venting remaining gas. However, in some case, though it is very unusual, repairs require without venting gas. For instance, this case is that damaged pipeline is remedied with split sleeve by welding. In this paper, in an effort to confirm a safe application of the split sleeve welding, residual stress, strain and temperature distributions are evaluated by computer simulation and experiments. The results obtained are as follows : 1) Computer modelling is supposed to be reasonable because microstructure changes due to welding is simulated coincidently as compare to that of real condition. 2) The maximal temperature on inside surface of pipeline is 50$0^{\circ}C$ for the repair welding process. 3) The amount of residual stress is estimated as the stress corresponding to 0.8% strain. 4) The repair process employed is determined to be technically preferable because of its avoiding cracks and fractures in the course of welding.

  • Pipeline network analysis requires fluid mechanics. A lot of equations have been used for flow analysis according to the behavior of fluid in pipelines and the operative situations. In this paper, simulation and analysis have been performed for the pipeline network system in Kyungin area using a steady-state mathematical model. Then, a statistical model using partial least squares(PLS) method has been developed with the data obtained from the developed mathematical model. The results showed that it is possible to simulate and analyze pipeline network systems using statistical approach.

  • This paper presents the flow characteristics of a ball valve used for a gas pipeline. Understanding of the internal flow of a ball valve is an important to analyze the physical phenomena of the valve. Present experimental study was performed by IEC 60534-2-3, the international standard for an industrial control valve testing procedure. Pressure measured at upstream and downstream of the valve, flow-rate and gas temperature passing the inside of the gas pipeline were measured with respect to valve opening rates. Throughout the experimental measurement of the ball valve, empirical equation of the pressure drop between the ball valve according to the mass flow rates is successively obtained using a polynomial curve fitting method. In addition, flow coefficient for determining the valve capacity is also analyzed with respect to valve opening rates using the curve fitting method.

  • The technology development of pipeline transportation of natural gas at artic and northern ice environments should be considered with unique characteristics of permafrost territory as a very interesting and challenging area. This work is to investigate bottleneck techniques and major impact factors through a literature search to figure out the core technology of the transport pipeline. Especially, theoretical approach themes could be determined to develop the technology flow assurance for permafrost regions through documentary survey on the considerations of thermo-fluid. Also, basic results through theoretical approaches could be achieved.

  • The frequency of major accidents which has probability of occurrence at the high pressure underground pipeline of industrial estate such an Ulsan, Yeo-ju by the other construction such as an excavation work will be compared to city gas underground pipeline to derive the basic event by the FTA and present. Also, Observe and analyze the pipe damage impact factor such as an excavation frequency, patrol cycle. As a result, It contributes to the safety improvement of high pressure gas buried pipeline due to obtain importance and sensitivity of the pipe damge impact factors.

  • A study is perfomed on the difference between the volume of gas purchased from Korea Gas Corporation (KGC) and that of measured gas deliveries including total sales, pipeline inventory, and other usage by gas companies at Seoul and Kyunggi area. Actual data md information from 1996 to 2001 on gas purchase from KGC, sales, loss and own company use and pipeline status of each gas company are used to identify net inventory change in pipeline, unaccounted inventory estimates based on billing cycle and their net changes. A framework to be used for the analysis of such differences and an empirical test result are being provided. As a conclusion, the hypothesis that each gas company purchased more than the volume of gas accounted-for by all the possible factors is shown to be rejected.

  • In Korea, the minimum separation distance between aboveground high-pressure natural gas pipeline and buildings is regulated by Korea gas safety (KGS) code. In this paper, The technical backgrounds for the revision of the KGS code related to the minimum separation distance was presented. A consequence-based approach was adopted to determine the minimum separation distance by a reasonable accident scenario, which was a jet fire caused by the rupture of one inch branch line attached the gas pipeline. Where, the higher thermal radiation flux threshold was selected for workers in industrial area than for people in non-industrial area, because the workers in industrial area were able to escape in a shorter time than the people in public. As result of consequence analysis for the accident scenario, we suggested the KGS code revision that the minimum separation distances between high-pressure natural gas pipeline installed above ground and buildings should be 30 meter in non-industrial area and 15 meter in industrial area. The revised code was accepted by the committee of the KGS code and now in effect.

  • The owner of underground metallic structures (gas pipeline, oil pipeline, water pipeline, etc) has a burden of responsibility for the corrosion protection in order to prevent big accidents like gas explosion, soil pollution, leakage and so on. So far, Cathodic Protection(CP) technology have been implemented for protection of underground systems. The stray current from DC subway system in Korea has affected the cathodic protection (CP) design of the buried pipelines adjacent to the railroads. In this aspect, KERI has developed a various mitigation method, drainage system through steel bar under the rail, a stray current gathering mesh system, insulation method between yard and main line, distributed ICCP(Impressed Current Cathodic System), High speed response rectifier, restrictive drainage system, Boding ICCP system. We installed the mitigation system at the real field and test of its efficiency in Busan and Seoul, Korea. In this paper, the results of field test, especially, distributed ICCP are described.
