The permeability of concrete influences the durability of concrete remarkably. This paper describes a programme of permeability tests carried out to determine the differences between permeability coefficients derived using water, oxygen and chloride ions. Tests have been carried out on three concretes having water/cement ratios of 0.45, 0.55, 0.65 to measure their water, chloride-ion and gas permeability coefficients. The test results indicate that the permeability of concrete increase with the increase water cement ratios. The water and gas permeability coefficients is presented from $1.43$\times$10^{-10} to 19.01$\times$10^{-10}m/s$ and from $0.88$\times$10^{-10}$ to $1.59$\times$10^{-10}$m$^2$for concrete of different water cement ratios. The current intensity passing through the concrete is presented from 4504 to 4920 C.
Separation of $N_2-SO_2$ mixed gas by polymer membranes, SEPA-97(CA), TFC, and FT-30 membrane, was investigated by varying pressure and temperature. The permeability coefficients and the separation factors of mixed gases were measured, and the influence of various factors on the gas permeability characteristics and separation performance were investigated. The range of pressure was 0.1~1.0 MPa, and that of temperature was 283~303 K. The experimental results showed that the permeability coefficients and the separation factors were increased with an increase in pressure, but they were deereased with increasing temperature. Among the examined membranes, FT-30 possessed the best gas-separating characteristics.
To develop a unconventional gas reservoir, an analysis of tight rock property are required. Especially, conventional measurements are difficult to be applied to unconventional resources such as tight gas reservoir because the permeability are extremely low compared to a conventional gas reservoir. In this study, an apparatus was developed for measuring low permeability and porosity based on a pressure pulse decay method under unsteady state conditions. The apparatus was applied for measuring the porosity and permeability of tight sand core samples from Gyeongsang basin in Korea. As a validation of the measurement, regression analysis was carried out using the dimensionless pseudo-pressure between the measured data and analytical solution. The results show the correlation coefficients above 0.96. Therefore, it is believed that the apparatus has a high accuracy.
In this study, the gas permeability, sound absorption coefficient, and sound transmission loss of the Paulownia tomentosa wood were estimated using capillary flow porometry, transfer function method, and transfer matrix method, respectively. The longitudinal specific permeability constant of the Paulownia tomentosa wood with a thickness of 20 mm was 0.254 for the control sample and 0.279, 0.314, and 0.452 after being subjected to heat treatments at $100^{\circ}C$, $160^{\circ}C$, and $200^{\circ}C$, respectively. The gas permeability was observed to be slightly increased by the heat treatment. The mean sound absorption coefficients of 20-mm thick Paulownia tomentosa log cross-section for the control sample and after being subjected to heat treatments at $100^{\circ}C$, $160^{\circ}C$, and $200^{\circ}C$ were 0.101, 0.109, 0.096 and 0.106, respectively. Further, the noise reduction coefficients of 20-mm thick Paulownia tomentosa log cross-section of the control sample and after being subjected to heat treatment at temperatures of $100^{\circ}C$, $160^{\circ}C$, and $200^{\circ}C$ were 0.060, 0.067, 0.062 and 0.071, respectively. The mean of sound transmission loss of the 20-mm thick Paulownia tomentosa log cross-section was approximately 36.93 dB. Furthermore, the gas permeability and sound absorption coefficient of the heat-treated Paulownia tomentosa discs slightly increased depending on the heat treatment temperature; however, the rate of increase was insignificant.
Membranes for biosensor were prepared from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)l derivatives using the solution casting method, and their gas permeabilities were studied. The polymer membranes dried slowly in air showed higher permeability coefficients than those dried in vacuum. The permeabilily coefficients of carboxylated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC) membranes for $O_2$ and $CO_2$ decreased as the pressure of the feed gas increased. The addition of dioctylphthalate (DOP) enhanced the permeation rates for $O_2$ and $CO_2$. For example, the permeability coefficients of CPVC membranes containing 30 wt. % DOP for $O_2$ and $CO_2$ at 100 psig were 2.03 and 0.96 Barrer, respectively, which were about 4~5 times higher than those of the membranes without DOP. Poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol) (Syn-PVCAcAl) obtained by hydrolysis of poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate (PVCA) showed a higher permeability coefficient for $CO_2$ in the presence of DOP than that for commercial PVCAcAl, but did not show any significant difference in permeability for $O_2$.
Hardened concrete contains pores of varying types and sizes, and therefore the transport of air through concrete can be considered. The rate of permeability will not only depends on the continuity of pores, but also on the moisture contents in concrete and finishing material on concrete. Also it knows that the durability of reinforced concrete structure is concerned with air permeability which effects on the carbonation occurred by invasion of CO2 gas and the corrosion of steel bar occurred by O$_2$. In this paper, the effects of curing conditions and finishing materials on carbonation and air permeability are investigated according to the accelerated carbonation test. As results, carbonation velocity and air permeability are effected by curing conditions and finishing materials, and air permeability coefficient is effected by moisture content. Also the relationship between carbonation velocity coefficients and air permeability coefficients has been quite well established.
The study presented herein aims to investigate the durability related properties of rubberized concrete. Two types of waste scrap tire rubber were used as fine and coarse aggregate, respectively. The rubber was replaced with aggregate by three crumb rubber and tire chips levels of 5, 15, and 25% for the rubberized concrete productions. In order to improve the transport properties and corrosion resistance of rubberized concretes, SF was replaced with cement at 10% replacement level by weight of total binder content. The transport properties of the rubberized concretes were investigated through water absorption, gas permeability, and water permeability tests. The corrosion behavior of reinforcing bars embedded in plain and silica fume based rubberized concretes was investigated by linear polarization resistance (LPR) test. The results indicated that the utilization of SF in the rubberized concrete production enhanced the corrosion behavior and decreased corrosion current density values. Moreover, the reduction in the water and gas permeability coefficients was observed by the incorporation of SF in plain and especially rubberized concretes.
A series of hydroxyl-group containing polyimides (HPIs) were prepared in order to investigate the structure-gas permeation property relationship. Each polymer membrane had structural characteristics that varied according to the dianhydride monomers. The imidization processes were monitored using spectroscopic and thermog-ravimetric analyses. The single gas permeability of He, $H_2$, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$ and $CH_4$ were measured and compared in order to determine the effect of the polymer structure and functional -OH groups on the gas transport properties. Surprisingly, the ideal selectivity of $CO_2/CH_4$ and $H_2/CH_4$ increased with increasing level of -OH incorporation, which affected the diffusion of $H_2$ or the solubility of $CO_2$ in HPIs. For $H_2/CH_4$ separation, the difference in the diffusion coefficients of $H_2$ and $CH_4$ was the main factor for improving the performance without showing any changes in the solubility coefficients. However, the solubility coefficient of $CO_2$ in the HPIs increased at least four fold compared with the conventional polyimide membranes depending on the polymer structures. Based on these results, the polymer membranes modified with -OH groups in the polymer backbone showed favorable gas permeation and separation performance.
Poly(ether-block-amide)(PEBAX$_{(R)}$) resin is a thermoplastic elastomer combining linear chains of hard-rigid polyamide block interspaced soft-flexible polyether block. It was believed that the hard polyamide block provides the mechanical strength and permselectivity, whereas gas transport occurs primarily through the soft polyether block. The objective of this work was to investigate the gas permeation properties of carbon dioxide and methane for PEBAX$^{(R)}$-1657 membrane, and compare with those obtained for other grade of pure PEBAX$^{(R)}$, PEBAX$^{(R)}$-2533 and PEBAX$^{(R)}$ based hybrid membranes. The hybrid membranes based PEBAX$^{(R)}$ were obtained by a sol-gel process using GPTMS ((3-glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane) as the only inorganic precursor. Molecular structure and morphology of membrane were analyzed by $^{29}Si$-NMR, DSC and SEM. PEBAX$_{(R)}$-2533 membrane exhibited higher gas permeability coefficients than PEBAX$^{(R)}$-1657 membrane. This was explained by the increase of chain mobility. In contrast, ideal separation factor of $CO_2/CH_4$ for PEBAX$^{(R)}$-1657 membrane was higher than PEBAX$^{(R)}$-2533 membrane. It was explained by the decrease of diffusion selectivity caused by increase of chain mobility. For PEBAX$^{(R)}$/GPTMS hybrid membrane, gas permeability coefficients were decreased with reaction time. Gas permeability coefficient of $CH_4$ was more significantly decreased than $CO_2$. It can be explained by the reduction of chain mobility caused by the sol-gel process, and strong affinity of PEO segment with $CO_2$. Comparing with pure PEBAX$^{(R)}$-1657 membrane, ideal separation factor of $CO_2/CH_4$ for PEBAX$^{(R)}$/GPTMS hybrid membrane has decreased to 4.5%, and gas permeability coefficient of $CO_2$ has increased 3.5 times.

High permeability, selectivity and stability are the basic properties also required for membrane gas separations. The $CO_2$ separation by liquid membranes has been developed as a new technique to improve the permeability and selectivity of polymeric membranes. Sirkar et al.(1) have atlempted the hollow-fiber contained liquid membrane technique under four different operational modes, and permeation models have been proposed for all modes. Compared to a conventional liquid membrane, the diffusional resistance decreased by the work of Teramoto et al.(2), who referred to a moving liquid membrane. Recently, Shelekhin and Beckman (3) considered the possibility of combining absorption and membrane separation processes in one integrated system called a membrane absorber. Their analysis could be predicted effectively the performance of flat sheet membrane, however, there are restrictions for considering a flow effect. The gas absorption rate is determined by both an interfacial area and a mass transfer coefficient. It can be easily understood that although the mass transfer coefficients in hollow fiber modules are smaller than in conventional contactors, the substantial increase of the interfacial area can result in a more efficient absorber (4). In order to predict a performance in the general system of hollow-fiber membrane absorber, a gas-liquid mass transfor should be investigated inevitably. The influence of liquid velocity on both a mass transfer and a performance will be described, and then compared with experimental results. A present study is attempted to provide the fundamentals for understanding aspects of promising a hollow-fiber membrane absorber.
