  • To measure the traffic pollutants with high temporal and spatial resolution under real conditions a mobile emission laboratory (MEL) was designed and built in KIST with close-cooperation with KIMM and Yonsei university. The equipment of the mini-van provides gas phase measurements of CO, NOx, $CO_2$, THC (Total hydrocarbon) and number density & size distribution measurements of fine and ultra-fine particles by a fast mobility particle sizer (FMPS) and a condensation particle counter (CPC). The inlet sampling port above the bumper enables the chasing of different type of vehicles. This paper introduces the construction and technical details of the MEL and presents data from the car chasing experiment of diesel and CNG city bus. The dilution ratio was increased rapidly according to the chasing distance. Most particles from the diesel city bus were counted under 300 nm and the peak concentration of the particles was located between 40-60 nm. However, the most particles from the CNG city bus were nano particle counted under 50 nm.

  • This paper is an investigation of the performance of absorption diffusers to suppress the vent noise emitted when high pressure gas is throttled. First, experiment for the static performance is carried out. When there is no through-flow, the insertion loss has been obtained in terms of 1/3 octave band spectrum and the effect of the number of diffusers and the thickness of the absorption material on the static performance has been obtained. And the similarity in the spectrum of the static insertion loss is confirmed by comparing two similar models with different size. Second, the dynamic performance has been obtained by experiment using blow-down of compressed air from a storage tank through an orifice of diameter 10 mm. The back pressure by the diffuser is measured and compared with that of a single diffuser. It is found that the insertion loss of asingle diffuser is very low around 3 dB at high frequencies with negative value at low frequencies. By absorption material between the diffuser tubes, however, the performance is increased considerably. Without flow the static insertion loss increases by 3 - 4 dB by doubling the thickness or the density of the absorptionmaterial. With flow, however, the dynamic insertion loss increases. While, the back pressure by the diffuser is small enough to be neglected.

  • The morphology of deposits on $15-{\mu}m$ thin SiC filaments has been investigated with SEM and compared with UV-excited laser induced broadband fluorescences in co-flowing, propane laminar diffusion flames in a reduced oxidizer environment. The homogeneous morphology of droplet-like deposits inner flame zone and the agglomeration of condensed-phase deposits and the transition to soots from grown up droplet-like precursors with approaching the flame surface can be observed in a barely sooting flame. The average size of the mature soots deposited in the luminous flame edge is scarcely dependent on their axial position in a confined flame under reduced oxidizer condition. A double structure of PAH fluorescence is observed in near-extinction flames with further decreasing of oxidizer. A comparison of the PAH fluorescence with the morphologies of deposits indicates that appearance of the "dark" hollow zone is caused by a decreased number density of developed liquid-phase large molecules and the outer weak fluorescence zone is caused by the diffusion of gas-phase small molecules.

  • The interaction between the hypersonic free stream and the side jet flow at high altitudes is investigated by direct simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method. Since there is a great difference in density between the free stream and the side jet flow, the weighting factor technique which could control the number of simulation particles, is applied to calculate these two flows simultaneously. Chemical reactions are not considered in the calculation. For validation, the corner flow passing between a pair of plates that are perpendicularly attached is solved. The side jet flow is then injected into this comer flow and solution is found for the merged flow. Results are compared with the experiments. For a more realistic rocket model, the flow past a blunted cone cylinder shape is solved. The leeward or windward jet injection is merged with this flow. The effect on the rocket surface is observed at various flow angles. The lambda effect and the wake structure are found like low attitudes. High interaction between the free stream and the side jet flow is observed when the side jet is injected in the windward direction.

  • Reactive ion etching process for InP using BCl3/O2/Ar high density inductively coupled plasma was investigated. The experimental design method proposed by the Taguchi was utilized to cover the whole parameter range while maintaining reasonable number of actual experiments. Results showed that the ICP power and the chamber pressure were the two dominant parameters affectsing etch results. It was also observed that the etch rate decreased and the surface roughness improved as the ICP power and the bias voltage increased and as the chamber pressure decreased. The Addition of oxygen to the gas mixture drastically improved surface roughness by suppressing the formation of the surface reaction product. The optimum condition was ICP power 600W, bias voltage -100V, 10% $O_2$, 6mTorr, and $180^{\circ}C$, resulting in about 0.15$\mu\textrm{m}$ etch rate with smooth surfaces and vertical mesa sidewalls Also, the maximum etch rate of abut 4.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$/min was obtained at the condition of ICP power 800W, bias voltage -150V, 15% $O_2$, 8mTorr and $160^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the installed performance of the PW206C turbo shaft engine used in the development of the smart UAV(Unmanned Ariel Vehicle) by KARI(Korean Aerospace Research Institute). It mainly aims to investigate performance behavior at installed conditions using both inlet and exhaust losses generated by CFD analysis of the ducts. The ways employed to be able to analyze the performance extensively were mainly rallied out by performing design point analysis of the engine where the performance simulation results from the commercial program 'GASTURB 9' used for simulation were used as inlet boundary condition for the ducts in CFD program The use of CFD tool involve modeling of the ducts to conform with the stipulated shape and sizes as defined by KARI with a grid density that allows reasonable flow characteristics applicable to aircraft components. Respective values of Shaft horse power obtained by varying flight Mach number, Gas generator RPM and Altitude considering several losses inclusive of those estimated by use of CFD tool were then plotted at three conditions with the ECS-OFF, ECS-MAX and at un-installed condition. Reasonable results were obtained as a result of using computational fluid dynamics that can hence be justified as an alternative tool for use in future flow analysis of engine and components.

  • Structures of interfacial waves in nearly-horizontal countercurrent stratified air-water flow have been measured by means of a needle contact method. Based upon a statistical analysis for the liquid film distribution, statistical properties of the waves such as mean film thickness, mean wave amplitude and rms value of the wave fluctuation have been calculated. The results show that the film distribution can be described by a Gaussian probability density function for the three-dimensional wave regime. It is also indicated that the mean film thick ness and the rms value of the wave fluctuation increase as gas and liquid flow rates are increased in countercurrent two-phase flow. The dimensionless intensity of the wave fluctuation may be regarded as a function of the Froude number and the dimensionless mean film thickness.

  • Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute We present a weak-lensing study of the galaxy cluster SPT-CL J2106-5844 at z=1.132 discovered in the South Pole Telescope Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SPT-SZ) survey. The cluster is claimed to be the most massive system at z > 1 in the SPT-SZ survey. The inferred mass ($M_{200c}=(1.27{\pm}0.21){\times}10^{15}M_{sun}$) is somewhat unusual at such a high redshift given the current ΛCDM prediction. The mass estimates, however, may be biased because the hydrostatic assumption may not hold when the universe was about 40% of the current age. In this work, we reconstruct the dark matter distribution and measure the mass of this interesting cluster using weak-lensing analysis based on the images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3 on-board the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that the mass distribution of the cluster is unimodal with no significant substructures. The centroid of the dark matter agrees with both galaxy luminosity and number density distributions, as well as the hot gas centroid. We confirm that the cluster is indeed extremely massive ($M_{200c}=(1.81{\pm}0.47){\times}10^{15}M_{sun}$) supporting the previous non-lensing measurements. We also discuss the rarity of the cluster in the ΛCDM cosmology, comparing with the expected abundance of similarly massive clusters.

  • Fluidized bed reactors operated in subatmospheric pressure has been focused because several industrial applications such as vacuum drying and plasma cvd requires reduced pressure fludization. However, the hydrodynamics of fluidized beds in subatmospheric pressure has not been extensively investigated. The pressure drop in the fluidized bed has been measured with variation of downstream pressures from 1.33 to 101.3 kPa in the shallow and deep fluidized beds under the sub-atmospheric pressures. The obtained minimum fluidization velocity of powders is a function of pressure due to the changes of gas density and mean free path. We can experimentally determine the critical Knudsen number and the critical pressure to define the slip regime significantly to influence the hydrodynamics of fluidized beds.

  • We investigate the morphology of Active Galactic Nuclei(AGN) jets. AGN jets propagate over kpc $\~$ Mpc and their beam velocities are close to the speed of light. The reason why many jets propagate over so long a distance and sustain a very collimated structure is not well understood. It is argued that some dimensionless parameters, the density and the pressure ratio of the jet beam and the ambient gas, the Mach number of the beam, and relative speed of the beam compared to the speed of light, are very useful to understand the morphology of jets namely, bow shocks, cocoons, nodes etc. The role of each parameters has been studied by numerical simulations. But more research is necessary to understand it systematically. We have developed 2D relativistic hydrodynamic code to analyze relativistic jets. We pay attention to the propagation velocity which is derived from 1D momentum balance in the frame of the working surface. We show some of our models and discuss the dependence of the morphology of jets on the parameter.
