  • To prevent safety hazards in dangerous working area, we have proposed an intelligent image analysis system. Six common patterns of safety violations of workers' are defined and its motion detection algorithms are developed for alarm to CCTV monitoring system. Developed algorithms are implemented at 195 dangerous areas such as chemical and gas treated room. The results of violated motion detection ratio by developed system shows 94.95% of true positive cases, and 0.21% of false positive cases from all 587,645 event cases in one month implementation period. In the period, it is observed that the number of safety rule violations and the following accidents are decreased.

  • We simulate the particle bed motions with combustion and reduction in steel making rotary kilns. The particle bed motions are simulated by a Lagrangian approach called Discrete Phase Model (DPM). To reduce the number of tracking particles, the Coarse Grain Model (CGM) was applied. The model for particle motions showed good agreements with experimental results. In addition to the particle motion, the combustion and reduction simulation was performed. The combustion and reduction simulation can consider heat, mass and momentum transfer between the gas phase and particle beds.

  • Liquid crystalline poly(allylsulfone) networks having $SO_2$ in a main chain and mesogens in a side chain were synthesized and their gas permeability and permselectivity were determined. The monomer II having two allyl groups on the each end group was able to form polymer networks by polymerization reaction, while the monomer I having only one allyl group was not. Molecular motion of the poly(allylsulfone) networks were retarded with increasing the cross-linking density, and the segmental motion of networks was developed enough to show isotropic phase transition. Gas permeabilities of poly(II-5 $01/I-OCH_3$ 99) were 2.58 baller for $O_2$ and 18.4 barrer for $H_2$. It means that hydrogen gas are 7 times more permeable than oxygen. Its permselectivities were high as 23.9 for ${\alpha}(H_2/N_2)$. The permselectivity was increased with increasing the cross-linking density. For example, ${\alpha}(H_2/N_2)$ was 36.8 in poly(II-5 $10/I-OCH_3$ 90), which was shown to be the highest value among these poly(allylsulfone) networks.

  • The selectivity of a gas in the carbon molecular sieve membrane (CMSM) can be expressed as the ratio of the product of the diffusivity and the solubility of two different gases. The diffusivity is also expressed as the product of the entropy and the total energy (kinetic and potential energy) in the nano-sized pore of the membrane. The present study calculates the entropic-energy and selectivity of penetrant gases such as H$_2$, O$_2$, N$_2$, and CO$_2$ from the gas-in-a box theory to physically analyze the diffusivity of penetrant gas in slit-shaped pore of CMSM focusing on the restriction of gas motion based on the size difference between penetrant gas pairs. The contribution of each energy term is converted to entropic term separately. By the conjugated calculation for each entropic-energy, the entropic effects on diffusivity-selectivity for gas pairs such as H$_2$/N$_2$, CO$_2$/N$_2$, and O$_2$/N$_2$ were analyzed within active pore of CMSM. In the activated diffusion domain, the calculated value of entropic-selectivity lies between 9.25 and 111.6 for H$_2$/N$_2$, between 3.36 and 6.0 for CO$_2$/N$_2$, and between 1.25 and 16.94 for O$_2$/N$_2$, respectively. The size decrement of active pore in CMSM had the direct effect on the reduction of translational entropic-energy and the contribution of vibrational entropic-energy for N$_2$, O$_2$, and H$_2$ was almost negligible. However, the vibrational entropic term of CO$_2$ might extravagantly affect on the entropic-selectivity.

  • The fast pyrolysis characteristics of lignocellulosic biomass are investigated for a bubbling fluidized bed reactor by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To simulate multiphase reacting flows for gases and solids, an Eulerian-Eulerian approach is applied. Attention is paid for the primary and secondary reactions affected by gas-solid flow field. From the result, it is scrutinized that fast pyrolysis reaction is promoted by chaotic bubbling motion of the multiphase flow enhancing the mixing of solid particles. In particular, vortical flow motions around gas bubbles play an important role for solid mixing and consequent fast pyrolysis reaction. Discussion is made for the time-averaged pyrolysis reaction rates together with time-averaged flow quantities which show peculiar characteristics according to local transverse location in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor.

  • It is well known that an air bubble trapped in water emits light at its collapse robustly with a proper forcing amplitude of ultrasound. Instability mechanism which causes deviation from sphericity of bubble wall was investigated theoretically. The rapid change of the bubble wall velocity which is both dependent on the forcing amplitude, was found to be a major factor of instability of the interface. The Rayleigh-Taylor instability which occurs when rapid acceleration is directed from the lighter towards the heavier fluid is found to be not related to the instability of the sonoluminescing gas bubble. A good agreement between the calculation results and experimental data is found.

  • The purpose of this study is to analysis the charging gas effect on the resonance and performance characteristics of the linear compressor for small scale FPFD Stirling refrigerator. To ensure high performance of FPFD type Stirling refrigerator, the operating frequency of the refrigerator should be around the natural frequency of compressor. The gas spring effect which is induced from pressure change in cylinder due to motion of pistons has significant effect on the natural frequency of the compressor. The numerical results show the linear compressor has high natural frequency when the charging pressure of working fluid is high.

  • In this paper the experiments of breakdown characteristics $SF_6$ liquid ($LSF_6$) in model GIS(Gas Insulated Switchgear) were described. From the experiments results, The ability of $LSF_6$ insulation is higher than high-pressurized $SF_6$ gas. The breakdown characteristics of $LSF_6$ were produced by bubble formed evaporation of $LSF_6$ and bubble caused by high electric emission. It is considered in this paper that the results are fundamental data for electric insulation design of superconductor and cryogenic equipments machinery which will be studied and developed in the future.

  • The droplet impact and merging process on a flat substrate with contact angle hysteresis is numerically studied. The droplet deformation is determined by an improved level-set method employing a sharp-interface technique for the stress condition at the liquid-gas interface and the contact angle condition at the liquid-gas-solid interline. Based on the computations, the droplet impact and merging pattern is investigated to find the optimal condition in manufacturing a micro-line. The effects of dynamic contact angles and droplet spacing on droplet motion are quantified.

  • Free surface impinging jet on a moving plate, which is applicable to cooling of hot metals in a steel-making process, is investigated numerically by solving the Navier-Stokes equations in the liquid and gas phases. The free surface of liquid-gas interface is tracked by a level-set method which is improved by incorporating the ghost fluid approach based on a sharp-interface representation. The method is further improved by employing a nonequilibrium $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model including the effect of low Reynolds number. The computations are made to investigate the effects of the nozzle pitch, moving velocity of plate and jet velocity on the interfacial motion and the associated flow and temperature fields.
