  • Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) is an environment friendly method of using coal. Several commercial IGCC plants have been built worldwide during the past decade, and a domestic development project has also been launched recently. Operation and performance characteristics of a gas turbine in the IGCC plant deviates from those of original gas turbines due to several factors such as increased amount of fuel supply and integration with other components. In this study, performance of a gas turbine in the IGCC plant is analyzed considering its integration with the air separation unit (ASU). Influence of the degree of integration (split of air supplies to ASU from the auxiliary compressor and the gas turbine compressor) on the system performance is investigated. In addition, effect of modulating nitrogen return flow from the gasifier to the gas turbine on the operating characteristics of the gas turbine is examined.

  • In order to increase the efficiency of the sputtering method widely used in thin film fabrication, a dc sputtering apparatus which supplies both high frequency and magnetic field from the outside was fabricated, and cobalt thin film was fabricated using this apparatus. The apparatus can independently control the applied voltage, the target-substrate distance, and the target current, which are important parameters in the sputtering method, so that a stable glow discharge is obtained even at a low gas pressure of $10^{-3}$ Torr. The fabrication conditions using the sputtering method were mainly performed in $Ar+O_2$ mixed gas containing about 0.6 % oxygen gas under various Ar gas pressures of 1 to 30 mTorr. The microstructure of Co thin films deposited using this apparatus was examined by electron diffraction pattern and X-ray techniques. The magnetic properties were investigated by measuring the magnetization curves. The microstructure and magnetic properties of Co thin films depend on the discharge gas pressure. The thin film fabricated at high gas pressure showed a columnar structure containing a large amount of the third phase in the boundary region and the thin film formed at low gas pressure showed little or no columnar structure. The coercivity in the plane was slightly larger than that in the latter case.

  • The results of the combustion performance tests of gas generator which supplies hot gas into the turbine of turbo-pump for liquid rocket engine and uses LOx and kerosene as propellant are described. The gas generator consists of a injector head with F-O-F impinging injector, a water cooled combustion chamber, a gas torch igniter, a turbulence ring and an instrument ring. The effect of turbulence ring and combustion chamber length on performance of gas generator are investigated. The ignition and combustion at design point are stable and the pressure and gas temperature at gas generator exit meets the target. The turbulence ring installed at middle of chamber effectively mixes hot gas with cold gas and the effect of residence time of hot gas in gas generator on combustion efficiency is small. Test results show that the main parameter controlling the gas temperature at gas generator exit is overall O/F ratio.

  • In order to reduce the compression power and to use the overall energy contained in LNG effectively, a combined cycle is devised and simulated. The combined cycle is composed of two cycles; one is an open cycle of liquid/solid carbon dioxide production cycle utilizing LNG cold energy in $CO_2$ condenser and the other is a closed cycle gas turbine which supplies power to the $CO_2$ cycle, utilizes LNG cold energy for lowering the compressor inlet temperature, and uses the heating value of LNG at the burner. The power consumed for the $CO_2$ cycle is investigated in terms of a solid $CO_2$ production ratio. The present study shows that much reduction in both $CO_2$ compression power (only 35% of the power used in conventional dry ice production cycle) and $CO_2$ condenser pressure could be achieved by utilizing LNG cold energy and that high cycle efficiency (55.3% at maximum power condition) in the gas turbine could be accomplished with the adoption of compressor inlet cooling and regenerator. Exergy analysis shows that irreversibility in the combined cycle increases linearly as a solid $CO_2$ production ratio increases and most of the irreversibility occurs in the condenser and the heat exchanger for compressor inlet cooling. Hence, incoming LNG cold energy to the above components should be used more effectively.

  • In order to prevent secondary disaster such as gas explosion which comes after a devastating magnitude earthquake, the seismic monitoring and transmission system for natural gas governor station was developed. To measure ground motions precisely and operate the seismic monitoring system efficiently, the position and method of accelerometer installation were recommended by the analysis of ground noise patterns of governor station. For making a decision on prompt shut-off of gas supplies in the event of a great earthquake, the real-time calculation algorithm of PGA(Peak Ground Acceleration) and SI(Spectrum Intensity) were developed and it has been implemented in the seismic monitoring and transmission system.

  • Each atom is enclosed with $\pi$-rays, which were produced by the alternating magnetic field that is made by the electron's going and returning between atoms. If some resonant $\pi$-rays are supplied to and suppress the fencing $\pi$-rays, the bonding will be broken because the equilibrium distance for the electron moving between atoms can not be maintained. Electrolysis process supplies $\pi$-rays of Gibb's free energy to the reactant atoms and then the component atoms are divided into and are induced to both electric poles. (omitted)

  • Power consumption in Southeast Asia is steadily increasing due to industrialization and the effects of hot and humid climates. However, there are not enough energy generation facilities and infrastructures to meet the growing demand because it is difficult to secure the construction and operation costs of the transmission and distribution systems. This study aims to develop a gas engine driven heat pump system that supplies heating, cooling and electric power to buildings. This system, besides its normal function to produce heat, has the capacity to generate electricity on a household level. This paper investigates similar cases overseas before developing the system. Through the investigation of commercialized similar systems, the level of technology and market trend of development system were identified. Features and specifications of commercial and industrial systems will be used for system development.

  • Anti-icing is important in gas turbines because ice formation on compressor inlet components, especially inlet guide vane, can cause performance degradation and mechanical damages. In general, the compressor bleeding anti-icing system that supplies hot air extracted from the compressor discharge to the engine intake has been used. However, this scheme causes considerable performance drop of gas turbines. A new method is proposed in this study for the anti-icing in combined cycle power plants(CCPP). It is a heat exchange heating method, which utilizes heat sources from the heat recovery steam generator(HRSG). We selected several options for the heat sources such as steam, hot water and exhaust gas. Performance reductions of the CCPP by the various options as well as the usual compressor bleeding method were comparatively analyzed. The results show that the heat exchange heating system would cause a lower performance decrease than the compressor bleeding anti-icing system. Especially, the option of using low pressure hot water is expected to provide the lowest performance reduction.

  • For the liquid rocket engine, the gas generator oxidizer shut-off valve which supplies the oxidizer to a gas generator needs structural safety under the internal pressure, which is higher than the chamber pressure. In this study, static stress analyses of the various design in the vicinity of the region where the stress is concentrated were performed for designing the lightweight valve, A lightest model of which the concentrated stress does not exceed the yield criteria has been suggested. Also, whole size effect of the valve on the concentrated stress was investigated.
