The purpose of this study was to investigate how the landscape characteristics and the physical factors of landscape would affect the preference for the Gapcheon in Daejeon Metropolitan City. The Gapcheon was divided in three sections of the outskirts, Expopark areas, and residential complexes. After selecting seven landscape points where the sections could be expressed best, photographs were taken both in the upstream and downstream direction. The questionnaire used to evaluate the river's landscape included 20 items of adverbs that described the form of the river and one item to rate the overall preference. By analyzing the 14 pictures taken, the occupancy rates of the landscape elements in terms of the sky, river, vegetation of the river, mountain, and artificial structures. Image factor analysis was conducted for each of the sections in order to analyze the landscape characteristics of the Gapcheon, and then regression analysis was conducted in order to analyze the relationships among the physical factors influencing the preference of the landscapes. The results were as follows : Factors that compose the visual characters of urban river were classified be the aesthetic factor, the emotional factor and the situation factor. These 3 factors showed a 65.8% total variance. The river landscape with the biggest preference was the one from the Daedeok Grand Bridge as the occupancy area of the mountain, sky, and river was large and distributed evenly and the vegetation of the river was in a good harmony with the surroundings. After carrying out regression analysis to examine the relationships between the visual preference of Gapcheon and the physical factors of landscape(the sky, river, vegetation of the river, mountain, and artificial structure), the following regressions model was made : PRE=5.906+0.017(river)-0.053(artificial structure)-0.060(vegetation of the river) (R-square=0.48).
This study was conducted to evaluate water quality in the Keum River using multivariate analysis. The analysis data in Keum river made use of surveyed data by the ministry of environment from January 1994 to December 2001. Thirteen water quality parameter were determined on each sample. The results was summarized as follow; Water quality in the Keum River could be explained up to 71.39% by four factors which were included in loading of organic matter and nutrients by the tributaries (32.88%), seasonal variation (16.09%), loading of pathogenic bacteria by domestic sewage of Gapcheon (13.39%) and internal metabolism in estuary as lakes(9.03%). For spatial variation of factor score, four group was classified by each factor characterization. Station 1 and 2 was influenced by Daechung dam, station 3 was affected by domestic sewage of Gapcheon, station 10~12 was affected by estuary dyke and the rest station. The result of cluster analysis by station was classified into four group that has different water quality characteristics. In monthly cluster analysis, three group was classified according to seasonal characteristic. Also, in yearly cluster analysis, three group was classified. It is necessary to control the pollutant loadings by Gapcheon inflow domestic sewage in Daejeon city for the sake of water quality management of Keum river.
The usages of urban riverine areas for the Gapchoen and Yudungcheon in Daejoen City were evaluated by analyzing riverbed characteristics and water quality and by surveying the status of the floodplain usage including questionnaires of people visiting the rivers. Both rivers appear to be stable with insignificant bed changes as the riverbeds are dominated by gravels. Water qualities of both rivers have been improved significantly over the past decade although there are quite large seasonal fluctuations, which is common in most rivers in Korea. The results of floodplain usage analyses show that Gapcheon is dominated with static uses (>70%) such as promenades and resting facilities, while Yudungcheon by dynamic uses (>44%) such as sports facilities. Overall, both rivers require better plans for riverine area usage management considering a balance between the dynamic uses and the static uses such as natural observation places for education and habitats for birds and fish in the rivers. The questionnaire survey results indicate that overall the present status of both rivers are satisfactory and that water quality improvement is one of the key factors to enhance the value of the riverine areas. Future river restoration should be conducted by taking into account the characteristics of urban rivers in harmony with surrounding natural sceneries.
As nuclear industry has been developed, a various types of radiological contamination has occurred. After 9.11 terror in U.S.A., it has been concerned that terrorists' active area has been enlarged to use nuclear or radioactive substance. Recently, the most powerful earth-quake stroke, which triggered a massive tsunami in Japan and then Fukushima nuclear power plant reactor has suffered from a serious accident in history. The Fukushima reactor accident has occurred an anxiety of radiation leaks and about 170,000 people have been evacuated from the accidental area near the nuclear power plant. For these reasons, a social chaos can be occurred if radiological contamination occurs to the supply system for the drinking water. As such, the establishment of the radiation monitoring system for the city main water system is compelling for the national security. In this study, a feasibility test of radiation monitoring system which consists of unified hybrid-type radiation detectors was experimented for multi detection system by using gamma-ray imaging. The hybrid-type radiation sensors were fabricated with CsI(Tl) scintillators and photodiodes. A preamplifier and amplifier was also fabricated and assembled with the sensor in the shielding case. For the preliminary test of detection of radiological contamination in the river, multi CsI(Tl)-PIN photodiode radiation detectors and $^{137}Cs$ gamma-ray source were used. The DAQ was done by Linux based ROOT program and NI DAQ system with Labview program. The simulated contamination was assumed to be occurred at Gapcheon river in Daejeon city. Multi CsI(Tl)-PIN photodiode radiation detectors were positioned at the Gapcheon river side. Assuming that the radiological contaminations flows in the river the $^{137}Cs$ gamma-ray source has been moved and then, the contamination region was reconstructed.
This study was conducted to evaluate water quality in the Mankyung River using multivariate analysis. The analysis data which was surveyed from January 1996 to December 2002 in Mankyung river was aquired by the ministry of environment. Twelve water quality parameters were determined on each survey. The results were summarized as follow; Water quality in the Mankyung River could be explained up to 74.90% by four factors which were included in loading of organic matter and nutrients by the tributaries(43.28%), seasonal variation(10.40%), loading of pathogenic bacteria by domestic sewage of Gapcheon (12.41%) and internal metabolism in river(8.81%). The result of cluster analysis by station was classified into three group that has different water quality characteristics. Especially, Iksan river was appeared to considerable water quality characteristics against other station. In monthly cluster analysis, three group was classified by seasonal characteristics. Also, in yearly cluster analysis, three group was classified. It is necessary to control the pollutant loadings by domestic sewage and livestock waste for water quality management of Mankyung river.
The objective of this study is to develop a standardized model for analyzing water balances in large scaled water basin by considering agricultural water districts, and to evaluate the hydrological feasibility of applying this model to several water districts such as Nonbul, Geumbok, Daejeon 1, Daejeon 2, and Cheonggang in Geum river basin. Ten types of stream network were considered in developed model. Using this model, streamflows were simulated by major stations and water balances were analyzed by water districts. Simulated streamflows and measured streamflows were compared at check stations such as Gapcheon and Bugang stations in which Nash and Schcliffe's model efficiencies were 0.633, 0.902, respectively. This results showed its applicabilities to national water resources plan, rural water development plan, and total maximum daily load plan in Korea.
Since the baseflow, which constitutes most of the river flow in the dry season, plays an important role in the solution of river runoff and drought, it is important to accurately evaluate the characteristics of the baseflow for river management. In this study, land use change was evaluated through time series data of land use, and then baseflow characteristics were analyzed by considering climate change and land use change using climate change scenarios. The results showed that the contribution of baseflow of scenarios considering both climate change and land use change was lower than that of scenarios considering only climate change for yearly and seasonal analysis. This implies that land use changes as well as climate changes affect base runoff. Thus, if we study the watershed in which the land use is occurring rapidly in the future, it is considered that the study should be carried out considering both land use change and climate change. The results of this study can be used as basic data for studying the baseflow characteristics in the Gapcheon watershed considering various land use changes and climate change in the future.
Phytoplankton community is one of the important factors for the management of aquatic environment due to generation of varying toxins by harmful algal species. This study was performed to examine the phytoplankton community structure (PCS) in the midstream of Geum River (GR) from January 2014 to December 2015. The water sampling was performed in five stations on 2014, and three stations on 2015. Subsequently, the morphological identification was performed by microscopic observation in laboratory condition. As results, total 265 species were identified and it was comprised of 40.8% of Bacillariophyceae, 9.1% of Cyanophyceae, 44.5% of Chlorophyceae, and the others (4.9%). During the investigation period, total average standing crop of phytoplankton was $12,948cells\;mL^{-1}$, and it was comprised of $7,702cells\;mL^{-1}$ of Bacillariophyceae, $2,821cells\;mL^{-1}$ of Cyanophyceae, $2,121cells\;mL^{-1}$ of Chlorophyceae, and $305cells\;mL^{-1}$ of others. To verify which tributaries of upstream area influence on PCS of midstream of GR, the phytoplankton standing crops of two stations including Mihocheon (MH) and Gapcheon (GC) were examined on 2014, and compared to result of on 2015. The results were shown that the MH station had more similar phytoplankton standing crops with midstream of GR than GC station. The relationship between environmental parameters and phytoplankton dynamics was studied at the investigated station. As results, whereas water temperature and total phosphorus were represented the positive correlation, N/P ratio was remarkably exhibited negative correlation. From the results, it is suggested that the PCS of midstream of GR was more affected by MH station than GC station, and the changes of temperature, phosphorus concentration, and N/P ratio may be important factors on the PCS formation of midstream of GR.
