  • It has been used many kinds of horizontal butt-welding methods at block-to-block erection stage in shipbuilding companies. For examples, some companies use conventional FCAW process with one side or both sides groove joint welding, others use carriage with torch holder type mechanized welding method. Although lots of efforts were done until now, some problems in quality and productivity still remain in ship's hull welding. In this study, we have attempted to raise productivity and quality on horizontal position of welding with following 3 items. 1) Prepare groove condition with no root gap for making easy fit-up work. 2) Develop improved MAG (100% $CO_2$ gas shielding) welding process with solid wire for making sound root bead from one side. 3) Develop and apply quite new automatic welding carriage. The stability of new welding process was confirmed by conducting mechanical tests of weldments to verify the soundness of weldments.

Abstract As the speed gap between processors and disks continues to increase, the role of the buffer cache located in main memory is becoming increasingly important. The buffer cache is managed by block replacement policies and prefetching policies and each policy should decide the value of block, that is which block will be accessed in the near future. The value of block is based on the characteristics of block reference patterns of applications, hence accurate characterization of block reference patterns may improve the performance of the buffer cache. In this paper, we study the characteristics of block reference behavior of applications and propose a scheme that automatically detects the block reference patterns. The detection is made by associating block attributes of a block with the forward distance of the block. With the periodic detection using a two-stage pipeline technique, the scheme can make on-line detection of block reference patterns and monitor the changes of block reference patterns. We measured the detection capability of the proposed scheme using 8 real workload traces and found that the scheme accurately detects the block reference patterns of applications. Also, we apply the detected block reference patterns into the block replacement policy and show that replacement policies appropriate for the detected block reference patterns decreases the number of DISK I/Os by up to 57%, compared with the traditional LRU policy.

  • A quantum-chemical investigation on the conformations and electronic properties of trans(diphenyl-diheterocyclic) ethenes(t-PHEs) as building block for fully $\pi$-conjuated polymer are performed in order to display the effects of heterocyclic ring substitution. Structures for the molecules, t-PHEs were fully optimized by using semiempirical AM1, PM3 methods, and ab initio HF methods, with 6-31G basic set. The potential energy curves with respect to the change of single are obtained by using ab initio HF/6-31G basic set. The curves are not similar shapes in the molecules with respect to heterocyclic rings. It is shown that the steric repulsion interactions between phenyl ring and heterocyclic ring are subjected to different type with the respect to each heterocyclic ring. Electronic properties of the molecules were molecules were obtained by applying the optimized structures and selected geometries to the extended Huckel method. To investigate the change of HOMO-LUMO gap with respedt to the torsion angle, we select the optimized structures. By using the results, the dependency of conjugation for the energy gaps is analyzed. For t-PHE the energy gap increase up to 0.52 eV compared with its planar structure. In the cases of t-PHE and t-PHE, the energy gap increase by 1.29 and 1.15 eV, respectively, compared with its planar structure.

  • The effect of diurnal cycle, intermittent visit of observation satellite, sensor installation, partial coverage of remote sensing, heterogeneity of soil properties and precipitation to the soil moisture estimation error were analyzed to present the global sampling strategy of soil moisture. Three models, the theoretical soil moisture model, WGR model proposed Waymire of at. (1984) to generate rainfall, and Turning Band Method to generate two dimensional soil porosity, active soil depth and loss coefficient field were used to construct sufficient two-dimensional soil moisture data based on different scenarios. The sampling error is dominated by sampling interval and design scheme. The effect of heterogeneity of soil properties and rainfall to sampling error is smaller than that of temporal gap and spatial gap. Selecting a small sampling interval can dramatically reduce the sampling error generated by other factors such as heterogeneity of rainfall, soil properties, topography, and climatic conditions. If the annual mean of coverage portion is about 90%, the effect of partial coverage to sampling error can be disregarded. The water retention capacity of fields is very important in the sampling error. The smaller the water retention capacity of the field (small soil porosity and thin active soil depth), the greater the sampling error. These results indicate that the sampling error is very sensitive to water retention capacity. Block random installation gets more accurate data than random installation of soil moisture gages. The Walnut Gulch soil moisture data show that the diurnal variation of soil moisture causes sampling error between 1 and 4 % in daily estimation.

  • This paper proposes a hardware structure and associated finite state machine designs sharing key scheduling circuitry to enhance the performance of the block cypher algorithm, HIGHT. It also introduces an efficient protocol applicable to RFID systems comprising the HIGHT block cipher algorithm. The new HIGHT structure occupies an area size small enough to accommodate tag applications. The structure yields twice higher performance them conventional HIGHT algorithms. The proposed protocol overcomes the security vulnerability of RFID tags and thereby strengthens the security of personal information.

  • Purpose: We investigated the marginal fit between abutment and metal copings according to impression technique, wax block types, and metal types. Methods: We selected the traditional impression method of using rubber impression materials and the digital impression method of using oral scanners, three types of wax blocks, and two types of metal, both of which were domestically and commercially available, were selected to produce metal copings, and the marginal fit was determined through the use of silicon replication. Results: The measurements of axial wall fit revealed that the IYV specimens had the best fit, with a mean gap of 24.11±5.95 ㎛, followed by CEV, CHV, CSS, CSV, CES, CHS, and IYS specimens (mean: 33.44±8.41 ㎛). The differences were not statistically significant. The marginal gap measurements showed that the CEV specimen had the smallest gap, 17.25±4.13 ㎛, followed by the CSV, CHV, CSS, CES, CHS, IYV, and IYS specimen (mean: 43.47±15.63 ㎛). The differences were statistically significant. Conclusion: The axial wall fit of the metal coping (VeraBond2V; Aalba Dent, Inc., Fairfield, CA, USA) produced by the lost wax technique with the traditional impression method was excellent. The marginal fit of the metal coping (VeraBond 2V) produced by wax milling with the use of an oral scanner was also excellent. The marginal fit of the metal coping was within the clinically acceptable limits in all groups.

  • The most widely used block convolution method is the overlap save algorithm (OSA), where a block of M data to be convolved with a filter is concatenated with the previous block and 2M-point FFT and multiplications are performed for this overlapped block. By discarding half of the results, we obtain linear convolution results from the circular convolution. This paper proposes a new transform which reduces the block size to only M for the block convolution. The proposed transform can be implemented as the M multiplications followed by M-point FFT Hence, existing efficient FFT libraries and hardware can be exploited for the implementation of proposed method. Since the required transform size is half that of the conventional method, the overall computational complexity is reduced. Also the reduced transform size results in the reduction of data access time and cash miss-hit ratio, and thus the overall CPU time is reduced. Experiments show that the proposed method requires less computation time than the conventional OSA.

  • In welding of thin plate, some defects such as melt through and unmelted zone occur easily at welding start, however there is a limited study on those problems. Therefore the effects of start block and arc length on melt through and unmelted zone at start were investigated in this study. When start block height was lower than base metal, there was melt through at start. And when the height was even with base metal, no unmelted zone existed. Unmelted zone was increased as start block height increased from 0mm to 0.5mm. However unmelted zone was not much changed as the height increasing from 0.5mm to 1.0mm. When gap existed between start block and base metal, melt through occurred. However, unmelted zone was increased as the contact force of start block on base metal was increased from 0kgf to 7.5kgf. And when arc length was decreased from 3.8mm to 3.0mm, unmelted zone was decreased. It was concluded that the optimum condition to prevent melt through and to minimize unmelted zone would be with start block height 0.25mm, contact force 3.0kgf, and arc length 3.4mm. This optimum condition was applied to the mass production line and resulted in satisfied outcome.

  • Recently, rudder erosion due to cavitation has been frequently reported on a semi-spade rudder of a high-speed large ship. This problem raises economic and safety issues when operating ships. The semi-spade rudders have a gap between the horn/pintle and the movable wing part. Due to this gap, a discontinuous surface, cavitation phenomenon arises and results in unresolved problems such as rudder erosion. In this study, we made a rudder model for 2-D experiments using the NACA0020 and also manufactured gap flow blocking devices to insert to the gap of the model. In order to study the gap flow characteristics at various rudder deflection angles($5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $35^{\circ}$) and the effect of the gap flow blocking devices, we carried out the velocity measurements using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) techniques and cavitation observation using high speed camera in Seoul National University cavitation tunnel. To observe the gap cavitation on a semi-spade rudder, we slowly lowered the inside pressure of the cavitation tunnel until cavitation occurred near the gap and then captured it using high-speed camera with the frame rate of 4300 fps(frame per second). During this procedure, cavitation numbers and the generated location were recorded, and these experimental data were compared with CFD results calculated by commercial code, Fluent. When we use gap flow blocking device to block the gap, it showed a different flow character compared with previous observation without the device. With the device blocking the gap, the flow velocity increases on the suction side, while it decreases on the pressure side. Therefore, we can conclude that the gap flow blocking device results in a high lift-force effect. And we can also observe that the cavitation inception is delayed.

  • Purpose: The aims of this study were (1) to investigate the relationship between the characteristics of allogenic bone block and the compressive strength of an allogenic bone block measured by biomechanical experiments, and (2) to compare the maximum pressure load of allogenic bone block with the gap pressure measured at the high tibial opening osteotomy. Materials and Methods: Ten patients who provided informed consent for gap pressure measurements during opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) were included. The gap pressures were measured at 1 mm intervals while opening the osteotomy site from 8 mm to 14 mm. Seventeen U-shaped allogenous wedge bone blocks were made from the femur, tibia, and humerus. The height, width, cross-sectional area, and cortex thickness of the bone blocks were measured, along with the maximum compressive load just before breakage. The relationship between these characteristics and the maximum pressure load of the bone blocks was evaluated. The gap pressures measured in OWHTO were compared with the maximum pressure loads of the allogenous wedge bone blocks to evaluate the possibility of inserting allogenous wedge bone blocks into the osteotomy site without a distractor in OWHTO. Results: The OWHTO gap pressure increased with increasing osteotomy site opening. The mean gap pressure, which occurred at a 14-mm opening, was 282±93 N; the maximum pressure was 427 N. The maximum pressure load of the allografts was 13,379±6,469 N (minimum, 5,868; maximum, 29,130 N) and was correlated significantly with the cortical bone thickness (correlation coefficient=0.693, p=0.002) and cross-sectional area (correlation coefficient=0.826, p<0.001). Depending on the sterilization method, the maximum pressure loads for the bone blocks were 13,406±5,928 N for freeze-dried and 13,348±7,449 N for fresh frozen. The maximum compressive load of the allogenous wedge bone blocks was 13.7-times greater than that in OWHTO opened to 14 mm (5,868 N vs. 427 N). Conclusion: The compressive strength of allogenous wedge bone blocks was sufficiently greater than the gap pressure in OWHTO. Therefore, allogenous wedge bone blocks can be inserted safely into the osteotomy site without a distractor.
