Unidirectionally solidified TiAl alloys were prepared by optically-heated floating zone method at growth rates of 10 to 70 mm/h in flowing argon. The microstructures and tensile properties of these crystal bars were found to depend strongly on the growth rate and alloy composition. TiAl alloys with composition of 47 and 50 at.%Al grown under the condition of 10 mm/h showed $Ti_3Al({\alpha}_2)/TiAl({\gamma})$ layer structures similar to single crystals. As the growth rate increased, the alloys with 47 and 50 at.%Al compositions showed columnar-grain structures. However, the alloys fabricated under the condition of 10 mm/h had a layered structure, but the alloy with increased growth rate consisted of ${\gamma}$ single phase grains. The alloy with a 53 at.%Al composition showed a ${\gamma}$ single phase regardless of the growth rate. Room-temperature tensile tests of these alloys revealed that the columnar-grained material consisting of the layered structure showed a tensile ductility of larger than 4 % and relatively high strength. The high strength is caused by stress concentration at the grain boundaries; this enhances the secondary slip or deformation twinning across the layered structure in the vicinity of the grain boundaries, resulting in the appreciable ductility.
The microstructures and properties of TiC dispersed nickel-base alloy were studied in this work. The alloy prepared by powder metallurgical processing was solution treated, 1st-aged at $880^{\circ}C$ for 16 hours, and then 2nd-aged at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Microstucture of sintered specimen showed that TiC particles are uniformly dispersed in Ni base alloy. In the specimen aged at $880^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours, the fine $\gammaNi_3$(Al,Ti) precipitates with round shape are observed and the very fine $\gammaNi_3$(Al,Ti) particles with round shape are precipitated in the specimen aged at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The presence of ${\gamma}$precipitates in TiC/Ni base alloy increased the hardness and wear resistance of the specimen. The hardness and wear resistance of the Ni-base with TiC are higher than those of conventional Ni-base superalloy X-750 because of dispersion strengthening of TiC particles. The hardness, transverse rupture strength and resistance of the specimen 2nd-aged at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours are higher than those of 1st-aged specimen due to ultrafine $\gammaNi_3$(Al,Ti) precipitates.
In this study, the variations of microstructures and tensile properties of Ti-(44-54)at.%Al binary alloys were investigated. The heat-treated microstructure depended greatly on their solidification structure and annealing temperature. We measured the variations of volume fractions of primary and secondary lamellar structure as a function of the heat treatment temperature in a Ti-47at.%Al alloy. The variation of ductility as a function of Al content was in good agreement with the change of fracture mode in the tensile fracture surface. It can be inferred that the variations of yield stress and hardness of ${\gamma}$ phase in a single ${\gamma}$-phase field region are enhanced by anti-site defects created by deviations from the stoichiometric composition. In a Ti-47at.%Al alloy within the (${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) two-phase field, the yield stress tended to be the maximum at a near equal volume fraction of lamellar and ${\gamma}$ grains. The ductility depended sensitively on the overall grain size and Al content. The calculation of fracture strain using Chan's model indicated that the change of ductility as a function of annealing temperature was primarily determined by the variations in the overall grain size and lamellar volume fraction.

High Temperature deformation behavior of newly developed beta-gamma TiAl alloy was investigated in this study. The optimum processing condition was investigated with the aid of Dynamic Materials Model (DMM). Processing maps representing the efficiency of power dissipation for microstructural evolution and instability were constructed utilizing the results of hot compression test at temperatures ranging from $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ and strain rate ranging from $10^{-4}/s$ to $10^2/s$. The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) simulation was adopted to consider the deformation heating. With the help of processing map and microstructural analysis, the optimum processing condition was presented and the role of $\beta$ phase was also discussed in this study.

The high temperature deformation behavior of two-phase gamma TiAl alloy has been investigated with the variation of temperature and ${\gamma}/{\alpha}_2$ volume fraction. For this purpose, a series of load relaxation tests and tensile tests have been conducted at temperature ranging from 800 to $1050^{\circ}C$. In the early stage of the deformation as in the load relaxation test experimental flow curves of the fine-grained TiAl alloy are well fitted with the combined curves of two processes (grain matrix deformation and dislocation climb) in the inelastic deformation theory. The evidence of grain boundary sliding has not been observed at this stage. However, when the amount of deformation is large (${\epsilon}{\approx}$ 0.8), flow curves significantly changes its shape indicating that grain boundary sliding also operates at this stage, which has been attributed to the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization during the deformation. With the increase in the volume fraction of ${\alpha}_2$-phase, the flow stress for grain matrix deformation increases since ${\alpha}_2$-Phase is considered as hard phase acting as barrier for dislocation movement. It is considered that cavity initiation is more probable to occur at ${\alpha}_2/{\gamma}$ interface rather than at ${\gamma}/{\gamma}$ interface.

The high-temperature oxidation behavior of Ti39Al-10V alloy that consisted primarily of $\beta$-Ti, ${\gamma}$-TiAl, and $\alpha_2$$-Ti_3$Al phases was studied. The relatively thick and porous oxide scales formed consisted primarily of an outermost, thin TiO$_2$ layer, and an outer, thin $Al_2$$O_3$-rich layer, and an inner, very thick (TiO$_2$, $Al_2$$O_3$) mixed layer. Vanadium was present uniformly throughout the oxide scale. The formation and subsequent evaporation of V-oxides such as VO, $VO_2$, and $V_2$O$_{5}$ deteriorated oxidation resistance and scale adherence of the TiAl alloy significantly.y.
For expanding the applications and workability of TiAl alloy, elongation is very important property. Fine microstructure is needed for elongation and physical properties of TiAl alloys. In this study, The effects of cyclic heat treatment process for fine microstructure of Ti-46Al-Nb-W-Cr-Si-C alloy, which was made by VAR (vacuum arc remelting) and VIM(vacuum induction melting) centrifugal casting process, was investigated. Cycle heat treatment process was very effective for recrystallization of this TiAl system, which has microstructure size of $50{\sim}100{\mu}m$ through pre-heat treatment, cyclic heat treatment in ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ phase region and solution heat treatment respectively. Refined grain size was finally confirmed by photos of optical microscope and scanning electron microscope.

In this study, the effect of heat treatment to the electrochemical polarization resistance for the Ti-6Al-4V alloy was measured. The solution heat treatments were carried out at $1066^{circ}E, 966^{\circ}$E$, followed by aging heat treated $550^{circ}E, 600^{circ}E, and 650^{circ}E$. The electrochemical polarization resistance behavior was measured by potentio-dynamic polarization in the 1N $HNO_3$ + 15ppm HF solution. The obtained results were as follows. 1. As solution heat temperature increased. the corrosion potential was increased, whereas passive current density and critical current density were decreased. 2. As aging heat temperature increased, the corrosion potential was almost constant, but passive current density was decreased 3. The results of composition test measured by EDS at grain boundary and near $\gamma'$ precipitates indicated that S, Cl. and Si which originated from base metal were segregated at the grain boundaries Al and Ti which were the main alloying element in $\gamma'$ were depleted at the $\gamma'$ precipitated. The depletion of Al and Ti in $\gamma'$ was caused to early breakdown of passive film.
$Ti_{52}Al_{48}$ and $(Ti_{52}Al_{48})_{100-x}B_x(x=0.5, 2, 5)$ alloys have been Produced by mechanical milling in an attritor mill using prealloyed powders. Microstructure of binary $Ti_{52}Al_{48}$ powders consists of grains of hexagonal phase whose structure is very close to $Ti_2Al$. $(Ti_{52}Al_{48})_{95}B_5$ powders contains TiB2 in addition to matrix grains of hexagonal phase. The grain sizes in the as-milled powders of both alloys are nanocrystalline. The mechanically alloyed powders were consolidated by vacuum hot pressing (VHP) at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, resulting in a material which is fully dense. Microstructure of consolidated binary alloy consists of $\gamma$-TiAl phase with dispersions of $Ti_2AlN$ and $A1_2O_3$ phases located along the grain boundaries. Binary alloy shows a significant coarsening in grain and dispersoid sizes. On the other hand, microstructure of B containing alloy consists of $\gamma$-TiAl grains with fine dispersions of $TiB_2$ within the grains and shows the minimal coarsening during annealing. The vacuum hot pressed billets were subjected to various heat treatments, and the mechanical properties were measured by compression testing at room temperature. Mechanically alloyed materials show much better combinations of strength and fracture strain compared with the ingot-cast TiAl, indicating the effectiveness of mechanical alloying in improving the mechanical properties.
A series of load-relaxation tests and tensile tests were conducted to study the high temperature deformation mechanism of fine duplex gamma TiAl alloy at temperatures ranging from 800 to 105$0^{\circ}C$. Results of load relaxation test showed that deformation behavior at a small imposed strain ($\varepsilon$≒0.05) was dominated by dislocation glide and dislocation climb. To investigate the deformation behavior at a large amount of strain, the processing map was constructed using a dynamic materials model. Two domains were characterized in the processing map obtained at a strain level of 0.6. One domain was found at the region of 98$0^{\circ}C$ and $10^{-3}/sec$ with a peak efficiency of 48%, which was identified as a domain of dynamic recrystallization from the microstructural observation. The order was observed at the region of 125$0^{\circ}C$ and $10^{-4}/sec$ with a peak efficiency of 64%. The strain rate sensitivity measured indicates that the material was deformed by the superplasticity in the region.
