The specific radioactivity concentrations in the coal fly ash obtained from heat producing stations in Korea were analyzed and its radiological hazard for reuse in construction purpose was evaluated. The concentrations of uranium isotopes in the real fly ash measured by TBP solvent extraction method and $\alpha$-spectrometer were found to be about 116.1 Bq $kg^{-1}$ for $^{238}U$, 5.01 Bq $kg^{-1}$ for $^{235}U$, and 121.2 Bq $kg^{-1}$ for $^{234}U$, respectively. The activity ratio of $^{234}U/^{238}U$, in the coal fly ash was in $1.04\;{\pm}\;0.03$, which is similar to that of uncontaminated Korean soil in natural conditions (1.14). The specific radioactivities of $^{226}Ra,\;^{232}Th,\;and\;^{40}K$ in the coal fly ash were also determined using $\gamma$-spectrometer with a HPGe detector The results showed that $^{226}Ra,\;^{232}Th,\;and\;^{40}K$ in the coal fly ash were in concentrations of $101.7{\sim}113.9$, $39.5{\sim}54.2\;and\;315.0{\sim}990.6$ Bq $kg^{-1}$, respectively. With the specific radioactivities obtained from $\gamma$-spectrometric measurements of the coal fly ash, its radiological hazard for reuse was evaluated. The result showed that the radioactivity of the coal fly ash was in permissible level.
In order to measure the energy spectrum of a radioactive neutron source, the pulse shape discrimination (PSD) system with organic scintillator, NE-213, was characterized by using some of the gamma ray sources and neutron source, Am-Be. The figure of merit of the rise time spectrum of AmBe source measured by this system was about 1.13. This value agrees well with the value of 1.3 which is measured for monoenergetic source, $^{12}C(d,\;n)^{13}N$. The results of present experiment for performance test of NE213-PSD system will provide the useful technique to measure the spectrum of neutron-gamma mixed field and to establish the neutron energy spectrum and flux density standards.
This study aims to determine the effect of fly ash with a high replacing ratio of clay on the radiation shielding properties of bricks. Some interaction parameters (mass attenuation coefficients, half value layer, effective atomic number, effective electron density, and absorption efficiency) of clay fly ash bricks were measured with a NaI(Tl) detector at 661.6 keV, 1,173.2 keV, and 1,332.5 keV. For the investigation of their shielding behavior, fly ash bricks were molded using an admixture to clay. A narrow beam transmission geometry condition was used for the measurements. The measured values of these parameters were found in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. The elemental compositions of the clay fly ash bricks were analyzed by using an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. At selected energies the values of the effective atomic numbers and effective electron densities showed a very modest variation with the composition of the fly ash. This seems to be due to the similarity of their elemental compositions. The obtained results were also compared with concrete, in order to study the effect of fly ash content on the radiation shielding properties of clay fly ash bricks. The clay fly ash bricks showed good shielding properties for moderate energy gamma rays. Therefore, these bricks are feasible and eco-friendly compared with traditional clay bricks used for construction.
A study of rare-earth mineralization in Kyemyungsan metasedimentary formation of Precambrian Ogcheon Group was carried out in the Mt. Eore Area near Choongju City based on the thorium (Th) and uranium (U) count data of geophysical airborne survey. This rare-earth mineralization was found in the magnetite-bearing banded quartizite which contains diagnostically some amounts of the metamict allanite. The brown colored allanites are distributed as aggregates of fine grains and sometimes banded structures with magnetite (inter growth) along the banding. The ore bed is displaced by the small faults and granite intrusions, and separated 5 ore blocks. The dimensions of the outcrop are 50-80 m in width, 1,500 m in length with the strike of $N70-80^{\circ}E$ and dip of $50-80^{\circ}NW$. In the field, the values of total gamma ray count of GR-101A scintillometer were able to measure more than 400 cps and maximum 1,500 cps, which data are coincided with the values of GR-310 gamma ray spectrometer and the gamma ray count of well logging data. The chemical compositions of the allanites from EPMA data are ranged from$\sum^{TR_2O_3}$ 18.57% to 26.00%, and the cerium oxides ($Ce_2O_3$) of allanite are positive relation with $La_2O_3$, MgO, FeO, MnO and negative relation with $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, $Nd_2O_3$. The result of Neutron Activation Analysis (N.A.A.), Multi-Channel Analysis (M.C.A.) and wet chemistry of 25 outcrop samples for the elements of REE, Zr, U, Th shows strong anomalies. The good correlation elements with the thorium (Th) are the elements of La, Ce, LREE, $TR_2O_3$, Pr, Sm, Yb, Lu by the increasing order.
SiPMs are generally coupled into whole columns in gamma energy spectrum measurement, but the relationship between the distribution of whole SiPM columns and the energy resolution of the measured energy spectra is rarely reported. In this work, ∅ 3 × 3 inch NaI scintillator is placed on an 8 × 8 SiPM array, and the energy resolution of the 137Cs peak at 662 keV corresponding to the γ-ray is selected as a reference. Each SiPM is switched to explore the influence of the number of SiPM arrays, distribution position, and reflective layer on the energy resolution of SiPMs. Results show that without coupling, the energy resolution is greatly improved when the number of SiPMs ranges from 4 to 32. However, after 32 slices (the area covered by SiPMs relative to the scintillator reaches 25.9%), the improvement in energy resolution and total pulse count is not obvious. In addition, the position of SiPMs relative to the scintillator does not exert much impact on the energy resolution. Results also indicate that by adding a reflective film (ESR), the energy resolution of the tested group increases by 10.38% on average. This work can provide a reference for the design and application of miniaturized SiPM gamma spectrometers.

This study focuses on measuring the levels of naturally occurring radioactivity in the soil of Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, as well as the associated health hazard. Thirty (30) soil samples were collected from various locations and analyzed for 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K radioactivity levels using a High Purity Germanium detector (HPGe) gamma-ray spectrometer with a photo-peak efficiency of approximately 52.3%. The average values obtained for these radionuclides are 35.6 ± 5.7 Bqkg-1, 47 ± 12.5 Bqkg-1, and 877 ± 153 Bqkg-1, respectively. The level of 232Th is slightly higher and 40K is 2.2 times higher than the internationally recommended limit of 30 Bqkg-1 and 400 Bqkg-1, respectively. Various parameters were calculated based on the results obtained, including Radium Equivalent (Raeq), External Hazard (Hex), Absorbed Dose Rate (D), Annual Gonadal Equivalent Dose (AGDE), Annual Effective Dose Rate, and Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ELCR), which are 170.3 ± 24 Bqkg-1, 0.46 ± 0.06 Bqkg-1, 81.4 ± 2.04 nGy h-1, 582 ± 78.08 µSvy-1, 99.8 ± 13.5 µSv Gy-1, and 0.349 ± 0.04, respectively. These values are below the limits recommended by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) in 2002. This study highlights the potential radiation threats associated with natural radioactivity levels in the soil of Swabi and provides valuable information for public health and safety.
To understand the effects of drying conditions on changes of volatile compounds in fruits of Schizandra chinensis, we analyzed SDE (steam distillation and extraction) extract and Headspace vapor of fresh and dried samples using GC/MS (Gas chromatograph/Mass spectrometer). Contents of essential oils from samples with different drying conditions were 0.58% in fresh ones, 0.60% in freeze dried ones, and 0.30% in hot-air dried ones. In SDE extract, major volatile compounds in fresh samples were terpinen-4-ol(9.01%), ${\gamma}-terpinene(7.02%),\;{\beta}-myrcene(7.55%)$, unidentified sesquiterpenes(28.48%), showing almost the same composition as that in freeze-dried ones, but those in hot-air dried samples at $60^{\circ}C$ were ${\gamma}-terpinene(5.40%),\;{\alpha}-elemene(8.28%)$, unidentified sesquiterpenes(50.38%), indicating the chemical changes during drying procedure. In Headspace vapor, major compounds in fresh samples were ${\beta}-myrcene(22.05%),\;{\gamma}-terpinene(9.47%),\;{\alpha}-pinene(8.91%)$, sabinene(8.48%), which were different from those in SDE extract. In chemical compositions of volatile compounds in dried samples, ${\beta}-myrcene,\;{\alpha}-terpinene$ decreased in the order of freeze-drying > hot-air drying at $60^{\circ}C$ > hot-air drying at $60^{\circ}C$, and ${\alpha}-ylangene,\;{\alpha}-pinene$, camphene increased in the reverse order of the former. We observed the changes of the contents and compositions of essential oils compounds during drying procedure, especially a decrease in monoterpenes and alcohols and an increase in sesquiterpenes with relatively weak volatility.
Single crystals of sodium thiosulfate $(Na_2S_2O_3) have been grown from the saturated solution by the evaporation method at the optimum condition. Radiation damages in the crystal by ${\gamma}$-irradiation of $20{\times}10^6$ Rontgen have given rise to paramagnetic centers. The anisotropic spectra of each paramagnetic species have been obtained with the X-band EPR spectrometer at room temperature. When an isotropic D.P.P.H. at g value of 2.0036 is based on. ESR Spectra of the single crystal are recorded for each rotation about the perpendicular a, b and c axis with intervals of $10^{\circ}$ from $0^{\circ}$to $180^{\circ}$ in order to find out the properties of the crystal for anglar variation of the anisotropic peaks. The g values are calculated from the line position between the anisotropic peaks and the isotropic peaks of D.P.P.H. and then principal g values and their direction cosines of the species is obtained by the diagonalization of 9 matrix elements of the corresponding g values. From the analysis of the characteristic principal g values and direction cosines for ${\gamma}$-irradiated $Na_2S_2O_3$ crystal, anisotropic peaks corresponding to $SO_2^+, SO_2^- $are identified and the existences of unidentified and unstable paramagnetic defects are verified.
We evaluated the distributions of primordial radionuclides and effective dose rate of the Ogcheon Group, which includes rocks with high uranium content. Terrestrial gamma radiation was measured at 421 points using a portable gamma ray spectrometer. Dividing the study area into five geological units (og1, og2, og3, og4, and igneous rocks) revealed no significant difference in the concentration of surface radioactivity among the types. The concentrations of 40K, eU, and eTh for all samples ranged from 0.7% to 10.3% (average 5.2%), 0.6 to 287.0 ppm (average 8.5 ppm), and 4.0 to 102.4 ppm (average 31.3 ppm), respectively. The absorbed dose rate in the study area (calculated from the activity concentrations of 40K, eU, and eTh) was in the range of 28.84 to 1,714.5 nGy/h (average 195.4 nGy/h). Among the five geological units, the lowest average was 166.3 nGy/h (for og1) and the highest average was 233.3 nGy/h (for og2; median 198.1 nGy/h). The outdoor effective dose rate for the area obtained from the absorbed dose rate was in the range of 0.04 to 2.10 mSv/y (average 0.24 mSv/y). Except for the four sites located in the uranium-bearing coal bed of og2, none of the studied sites exceeded 1 mSv/y.

We observed selected super cluster regions in M82 with 5'5 arcsec field-of-view using near-IR high resolution echelle spectrometer, IRCS, at the SUBARU 8.2 m telescope. The slit width of 0.15 arcsec makes the high resolution (R ${\approx}$ 20,000) spectra in the H and K bands. In this poster, we present sample spectra of [FeII] lines and ro-vibration lines of $H_2$ which trace ionic shocks in the intercloud regions and molecular shocks. The line widths of $Br{\gamma}$ line are also measured to derive the velocity dispersion within the super star clusters.
