This study explores the factors that affect the lottery purchasing intentions of university students. Self-administered questionnaires were completed by 504 students attending four universities in Kwangju South Korea. The conclusions are as follows: First, approximately 43% of respondents participated in at least one lottery purchase and the frequency of lottery purchases during the last 12 months was 4.84. Gender issues were considered since almost twice as many males reported lottery purchases. Second, males were affected by attitudes toward lotteries; females were affected by past behavior, subjective norms, and attitudes toward lotteries. It was hypothesized that the attitudinal message would change behavior for male students while the accurate information and the normative message would also be effective for female students. The fact that just about half of the respondents have previously participated in gambling vis-$\grave{a}$-vis lotteries shows consumer educators that lottery purchases by youth is a social policy issue in need of systematic and scientific attention.

Purpose: This study was done to develop the multidimensional scale of addictive behavior for adolescents. Methods: The process involved construction of a conceptual framework, initial items, verification of content validity, selection of secondary items, and extraction of final items. The participants were 636 adolescents in six middle schools and four high schools. Results: Seventy items were selected for the final scale, and categorized 8 factors explaining 56.5% of total variance. The factors were labeled as game addictive behavior, shopping addictive behavior, mobile phone addictive behavior, nicotine addictive behavior, television addictive behavior, gambling addictive behavior, alcohol addictive behavior, and internet addictive behavior. The scores for the scale were significantly correlated with addictive personality and self-control. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the 70 items was .94. Scale scores identified adolescents as addictive behavior group, risk group, and average group. Conclusion: The above findings indicate that the multidimensional scale of addictive behavior for adolescents has good validity and reliability when used with adolescents. More importantly, it provides the first step toward developing a addiction prevention program. Additionally the scales provide an education or guideline, and proper physical and mental health management of youth in research and practice for the promotion of education.
Recently, social concerns about addiction problems not only to substances like alcohol and drug but also to gambling or internet have been increasing. Addiction is caused by a combined influence of biological, psychological. and social factors. However, addiction may also occur due to weak will-power or poor education on addiction. Even though addicted behavior provides temporal mood change such as euphoria, satisfaction. or relaxation. it leads to serious physical and mental disorder of the addicted person and its family members, which possibly results in fatal consequences. Nurses are in an environment to meet and take care of those who are addicted or vulnerable to addiction in order to help the clients to recover or to prevent people from addiction. Despite the importance of nurses role in addiction problems, there is a lack of consistency of addiction is often interchangeably used with other similar concepts in the society. In this study, a concept analysis of addiction was performed to more clearly and comprehensively understand addiction and to develop effective nursing intervention methods for addicted clients. The analysis is conducted according to a series of processes described by Walker and Avant. The defining attributes of addiction identified in this study are as follows: 1) existence of object 2) control loss 3) withdrawal symptoms 4) continued use despite adverse consequences.
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of spiritual commitment, social support and self-esteem for the deviant behaviors of middle-aged men from 40 to 59 years old. Further, this study seeks for providing basic data for designing social welfare service programs to intervene and prevent such deviant behaviors The findings of this study can be summarized as follows: The relationship among variables are as follows. First, spiritual commitment could directly affect the mid-life deviant behavior, and could cause influence indirectly through the self-esteem. Second, social support could not directly affect the mid-life deviant behavior, but could cause negative influence indirectly through the self-esteem. The significant is that this study triggered off interest in deviant behavior of middle-aged men. Especially, this study realized to us interest in spiritual commitment which has been not interested in the social work. This implicated that social support and self-esteem might effect to be deviant behavior of middle-aged men as well as deviant behavior of youth.
This study was conducted to propose anti-stigma strategies by verifying the social stigma on behavioral addiction under the premise that social stigma is a main obstacle to the treatment of addiction. A research model was constructed by applying the attribution affection theory and the modified attribution affection theory, which are very useful for explaining emotional and behavioral responses to the persons with mental illness. In other words, when attributing the causes of behavioral addiction to the personally controllable things such as personality, will and lifestyle, social distance can be increased by the mediate of anger. However, when attributing the causes of behavioral addiction to biological factors that can not be controlled by an individual, there can exist two pathway, one is the arising of helping behaviors by the mediate of sympathy (the attribution affection theory), and the other is the aggravation in the social distance due to rising fear (the modified attribution affection theory). In order to verify the research model, 383 adult subjects mainly in South Gyeongsang Province were randomly presented with the vignettes of gambling addiction and internet game addiction, and asked about the causes of the problems and their emotional, prejudicial, and behavioral responses to them. As a result, all pathway had statistically significant predictive effect. Therefore, in the case of attributing to personal causes, social distance increased by the mediate of anger. In the case of attributing to biological causes, both pathway had significant predictive effect, but the indirect effect of the pathway predictive of the helping behavior by the mediate of sympathy was greater. Researchers suggested that anti-stigma strategies, which emphasize that behavioral addiction is a mental health problem requiring treatment, are necessary.
Objectives: This study aims to examine the positive effects of developmental assets on the prevention of health risk behaviors among Korean adolescents. The framework of developmental assets was introduced as building blocks for healthy child and adolescent development by Benson and his colleagues. These assets represent positive external environmental factors and internal personal qualities which strongly influence the quality of life of adolescents. Methods: In 2001, we administered self-reported questionnaires to 3,739 girls and boys in grade 9 at eight schools in two cities, Chinju and Suwon in South Korea. The data was compiled into a 'Korean Youth Health Related Behaviors and Developmental Assets Survey' and then analyzed Youth health risk behaviors, which we measured in terms of their frequency, included tobacco, alcohol, and substance use, sexual intercourse, anti-social behaviors, violence, feelings of social isolation at school, depression or attempted suicide, absenteeism from school, gambling. Results: Overall, with respect to developmental assets, the Korean adolescents surveyed only 12.6 of the 40 assets, and 88 percent of adolescents had 20 or fewer of the assets. Based on their number of developmental assets(DA), adolescents were categorized into four groups: Group I(DA 0-10): Group II(DA 11-20): Group III(DA 21-30): Group IV(DA 31-40). We examined the differences in the frequency of each health risk behavior across the four groups, Group I-IV, and found that the frequency of most health risk behaviors decreased as the number of developmental assets increased. Conclusion: We therefore concluded that in order to make effective approaches for the prevention of health risk behaviors among adolescents, we should consider and develop more comprehensive and adolescents-based policy and programs to promote various aspects of adolescents' health and quality of life.

Addiction can be largely divided into two categories. One is called medium addiction in which medium itself causes an addiction. Another is called cause addiction that brings addiction through combination of sensitive self and latent personal action. The medium addiction involves addiction phenomena directly caused by illegal drugs, alcohol and various other chemicals. The cause addiction is dependent on personal sensitivities as a sensitive problem of personal and includes cyber addictions such as shopping, work, game, internet, TV, and gambling. In this paper we propose two-dimensional addiction model that are equivalent to using an R-L-C series circuit of Electrical circuit and a Spring-Damper-mass of mechanical system. We also organize a Duffing equation that is added a nonlinear term in the proposed two-dimensional addiction model. We represent periodic motion and chaotic motion as time series and phase portrait according to parameter's variation. We confirm that among parameters chaotic motion had addicted state and periodic motion caused by change in control coefficient had pre-addiction state.
This study empirically examines the effects of regulation on online gaming. Going beyond ad hoc heuristic approaches on individual behavior, we investigate the effects of regulation on dynamic changes of games or service providers. In particular, we propose three theoretical perspectives: social influence to investigate the regulation effect, the role of prior experience to determine the difference in the regulation effect size through users' prior experience, and network externalities to discover the difference in the regulation effect size according to the number of users on an online gaming platform. We use the vector autoregression methodology to model patterns of the co-movement of online games and to forecast game usage. We find that online gamers are heterogeneous. Therefore, policy makers should make suitable regulations for each heterogeneous group to effectively avoid generating gaming addicts without interrupting the economic growth of the online gaming industry.
Purpose - For the past several decades, behavioral economics or behavioral decision theory has undergone rapid development. This study provides a critical review of the development of behavioral economics with a focus on what are deemed to be core theories in the field. Starting from the utility function proposed by Daniel Bernoulli in the 18th century, the development history of utility functions until the emergence of the prospect theory is thoroughly reviewed. Some of the experimental results violating the traditionally assumed utility function and supporting the prospect theory value function are summarized. The most representative principles of rational choice are transitivity, independence from irrelevant alternatives (IIA), and regularity. The development of behavioral economics has been triggered by finding counter-examples to these principles. Some of the choice behaviors discussed in this study as counter-examples to the traditional theories of rational choice are the St. Petersburg paradox; the Allais paradox; gambling behavior; and the various context effects including the similarity effect, attraction effect, and the compromise effect. The Elimination-by-Aspects (EBA) model, which was proposed as an explanation for the similarity effect, is discussed in detail as well. Based on the literature review and further analysis, this study summarizes the relationship between the context effects, prospect theory, and EBA model. Research design, data, and methodology - This study provides an extensive literature review on several important theories in the field of behavioral decision theory and adds some critical comments to the theories and the relationships among them. This study first reviews the development of utility functions. Daniel Bernoulli introduced the concept of utility function to solve the St. Petersburg paradox. In the mid-20th century, Herbert Simon proposed the "satisficing" heuristic and presented a value function with a shape different from traditional utility functions. This study highlights the strengths and weaknesses of several utility functions proposed until the emergence of the prospect theory value function. Results - This study posits that prospect theory and EBA model are the two most important theories in the field of behavioral decision theory. They can explain various choice behaviors that traditional utility maximization analysis has been unable to. The application of these models to various fields is further increasing nowadays. This study explains how prospect theory and the EBA model can be used to explain the context effects. Conclusions - The traditional economic theory relies on a single variable called "utility" in explaining consumer choice. However, this study argues that, in investigating consumer choice, several other variables should also be considered. These are the similarity among alternatives, an alternative's prototypicality within the category, the dominance relationship between alternatives, and the reference point in evaluating alternatives. Due to the development of behavioral economics, we are now closer to a more complete understanding of consumer choice behavior than in the past when we had only a single tool called utility.
The purpose of this study is to explore qualitatively what kind of coping strategy the Korean older adults use when they are depressed and why. Participants were users, older than 60, of an elderly welfare center in Seoul, and answers of 34 respondents who experienced depression were included in the analysis. The collected data were analyzed through content analysis. The results of the analysis showed that strategies to cope with depression used by participants were composed of 6 domains and 11 sub-domains: health behavior (medical approach / exercise and diet), family and social contact (social interaction / going out and going on a trip / communication with family), Religious activities (Religious activities), lifelong education (hobbies / educational activities), productive activities (labor), health risk behaviors (drinking and gambling / resignation). The depression coping strategies of the older adults and their characteristics are as follows. First, older adults used diverse problem-focused coping strategies to cope with depression. Second, older adults considered various coping strategies together and used them simultaneously. Third, the facility space for older adults functions as a shelter. Fourth, although there were cases where medical approach was used, the intention to reuse was very low. Through this study, the following suggestions were made to help older adults cope with depression more successfully. First, access to various coping strategies should be promoted. Second, more places where older adults can spend their time comfortably need to be provided. Third, resistance to mental health care should be resolved.
