Numerical simulation for Resin Transfer Molding manufacturing process is attempted by using the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) combined with the level set method. XFEM allows to obtaining a good numerical precision of the pressure near the resin flow front, where its gradient is discontinuous. The enriched shape functions of XFEM are derived by using the level set values so as to correctly describe the interpolation with the resin flow front. In addition, the level set method is used to transport the resin flow front at each time step during the mold filling. The level set values are calculated by an implicit characteristic Galerkin FEM. The multi-frontal solver of IPSAP is adopted to solve the system. This work is validated by comparing the obtained results with analytic solutions. Moreover, a localization method of XFEM and level set method is proposed to increase the computing efficiency. The computation domain is reduced to the small region near the resin flow front. Therefore, the total computing time is strongly reduced by it. The efficiency test is made with a simple channel flow model. Several application examples are analyzed to demonstrate ability of this method.

The present paper outlined a procedure for geometrically nonlinear dynamic analysis of functionally graded graphene platelets-reinforced (GPLR-FG) nanocomposite cylinder subjected to mechanical shock loading. The governing equation of motion for large deformation problems is derived using meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method based on total lagrangian approach. In the MLPG method, the radial point interpolation technique is employed to construct the shape functions. A micromechanical model based on the Halpin-Tsai model and rule of mixture is used for formulation the nonlinear functionally graded distribution of GPLs in polymer matrix of composites. Energy dissipation in analyses of the structure responding to dynamic loads is considered using the Rayleigh damping. The Newmark-Newton/Raphson method which is an incremental-iterative approach is implemented to solve the nonlinear dynamic equations. The results of the proposed method for homogenous material are compared with the finite element ones. A very good agreement is achieved between the MLPG and FEM with very fine meshing. In addition, the results have demonstrated that the MLPG method is more effective method compared with the FEM for very large deformation problems due to avoiding mesh distortion issues. Finally, the effect of GPLs distribution on strength, stiffness and dynamic characteristics of the cylinder are discussed in details. The obtained results show that the distribution of GPLs changed the mechanical properties, so a classification of different types and volume fraction exponent is established. Indeed by comparing the obtained results, the best compromise of nanocomposite cylinder is determined in terms of mechanical and dynamic properties for different load patterns. All these applications have shown that the present MLPG method is very effective for geometrically nonlinear analyses of GPLR-FG nanocomposite cylinder because of vanishing mesh distortion issue in large deformation problems. In addition, since in proposed method the distributed nodes are used for discretization the problem domain (rather than the meshing), modeling the functionally graded media yields to more accurate results.
This paper describes a reduced finite element formulation for nonlinear transient heat transfer analysis based on Lanczos Algorithm. In the proposed reduced formulation all material nonlinearities of irradiation boundary element are included using the pseudo force method and numerical time integration of the reduced formulation is conducted by Galerkin method. The results of numerical examples demonstrate the applicability and the accuracy of the proposed method for the nonlinear transient heat transfer analysis.

A mechanical face seal is a tribo-element intended to control leakage of working fluid at the interface of a rotating shaft and its housing. Leakage of working fluid decreases drastically as the clearance between mating seal faces gets smaller. But the very small clearance may result in an increased reduction of seal life because of high wear and heat generation. Therefore, in the design of mechanical face seals a compromise between low leakage and acceptable seal life is important, ant it present a difficult and practical design problem. A fluid film or sealing dam geometry of the seal clearance affects seal lubrication performance very much, and thereby is optimization is one of the main design consideration. in this study the Reynolds equation for the sealing dam of mechanical face seals is numerically analyzed, using the Galerkin finite element method, which is readily applied to various seal geometries, to give lubrication performances, such as opening force, restoring moment, leakage, and axial and angular stiffness coefficients. Then, to improve the seal performance an optimization is performed, considering various design variables simultaneously. For the tested case the optimization ha successfully resulted in the optimal design values of outer and inner seal radii, coning, seal clearance, and balance radius while satisfying all the operation subjected constraints and design variable side-constraints, and improvements of axial and angular stiffness coefficients by 16.8% and 2.4% respectively and reduction of leakage by 38.4% have been achieved.
The purpose of the present study is to develop the 3D static and noise simulator based on Galerkin Finite Element Method (GFEM) using the unstructured hexahedral elements. The 3D, 2G neutron diffusion and noise equations are discretized using the unstructured hexahedral by considering the linear approximation of the shape function in each element. The validation of the static calculation is performed via comparison between calculated results and reported data for the VVER-1000 benchmark problem. A sensitivity analysis of the calculation to the element type (unstructured hexahedral or tetrahedron elements) is done. Finally, the neutron noise calculation is performed for the neutron noise source of type of variable strength using the Green function technique. It is shown that the error reduction in the static calculation is considerable when the unstructured tetrahedron elements are replaced with the hexahedral ones. Since the neutron flux distribution and neutron multiplication factor are appeared in the neutron noise equation, the more accurate calculation of these parameters leads to obtaining the neutron noise distribution with high accuracy. The investigation of the changes of the neutron noise distribution in axial direction of the reactor core shows that the 3D neutron noise analysis is required instead of 2D.
This paper presents a numerical study of the spatial behavior of a linear absorbing solute in a heterogeneous porous medium. The spatially correlated log-normal hydraulic conductivity field is generated in a given two-dimensional domain by using the geostatistical method (Turning Bands algorithm). The velocity vector field is calculated by applying the two-dimensional saturated groundwater flow equation to the Galerkin finite element method. The simulation of solute transport is carried out by using the random walk particle tracking model with CD(constant displacement) scheme in which the time interval is automatically adjusted. In this study, the spatial behavior of a solute is analyzed by the longitudinal center-of-mass displacement, longitudinal spatial spread moment and longitudinal plume skewness.

A two-dimensional water quality management model, Unsteady/Uncertainty Water Quality Model(UUWQM), is developed for a hydrodynamic analysis, an advection-diffusion analysis, and a reliability analysis by using uncertainty technique. The model is applied to the 35 km reach of Sungju to Hyunpoong in the midstream of Nakdong River. 2-D hydrodynamic and water quality analyses are peformed in this reach. Important input variables are decided by sensitivity analysis and verified by Monte Carlo method. Frequency distributions of water quality concentrations are computed from MFOSM method and Monte Carlo method at several locations in this study area. A water quality management system is constructed by calculating the violation probabilities of existing water quality standards.

A numerical model has been developed by employing a finite element method to simulate the depth-averaged 2-D dispersion of the heat pollutant, which is an important pollutant material in natural streams. Among the finite element methods, the Streamline Upwind/Petrov Galerkin (SUPG) method was applied. Also both linear and quadratic elements can be applied so that irregular river boundaries can be easily represented. To show the movement of heat pollutants, the reaction term describing heat transfer was represented as an equation in which sink/source term is proportional to the difference between the equilibrium temperature and water surface temperature. The equation was expressed so that the water surface temperature changes according to the temperature transfer coefficient and the equilibrium temperature. For the calibration of the model developed, analytic and numerical results from a case of rectangular channel with full width continuous injection have been compared in a steady state. The comparisons showed that the numerical results were in good agreement with analytical solutions. The application site was selected from the downstream of Paldang dam to Jamsil submerged weir, and overall length of this site is about 22.5 km. The change of water temperature caused by the discharge from the Guri sewage treatment plant has been simulated, and results were similar to the observed data. Overall it is concluded that the developed model can represent the water temperature changes due to heat transport accurately. But the verification using observed data will further enhance the validity of the model.
In the case of a Linear Induction Motor (LIM), numerical analysis method like Finite Element Method (FEM) has been mainly used to analyze the travelling magnetic field problem which includes the velocity-induced electromotive force. If the problem including the velocity-induced electromotive force is analyzed by FEM using the Galerkin method, the solution can be oscillated according to the Peclet Number, which is determined by conductivity, permeability, moving velocity and size of mesh. Consequently, the accuracy of the solution can be low and the vortexes of flux can be occurred at the secondary back-iron. These vortexes of the flux occurred at the secondary back-iron does not exist physically, but it can be occurred in the analysis. In this case, the vortexes of the flux can be generally removed by using Up-Wind method which is impossible to apply a conventional S/W tool (Maxwell 2D). Therefore, in this paper, authors examined the vortexes of the flux occurred at the secondary back-iron of the LIM according to variations of the Peclet Number, and analyzed whether these vortexes of the flux affect on the dynamic force characteristics of the LIM or not.

This paper is concerned with the analysis of elasto-plastic stress waves in a mode I semi-infinite cracked solid subjected to Heaviside pulse load. This study adopts a time-discontinuous variational integrator based on Hamiltonian in order to reduce the numerical dispersive and dissipative errors. This also utilizes an integration scheme of the constitutive model with 2nd-order accuracy which is formulated on the strain space for a rate and temperature dependent material model. Finite element analyses of elasto-plastic stress waves are carried out in order to compare the accuracy between a conventional Galerkin method and the time- discontinuous variational integrator.
