  • James Scarth Gale was a Canadian writer and Presbyterian missionary in Korea. He is A representative figure in Korean studies. Gale was the master of Korean studies at that time, which was based on Korean history, culture, folklore, and language. Gale was the first to will announce Korean Studies to the world. Gale's research and writings have spread to the continent of North America, including Europe and the United States, including Britain. At that time, Gale's study made Korean studies widely known to the world. There is a lack of research on Gale. It is because there is no material and documentary. Gale's documentary is on Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library on University of Toronto in Canada. Gale's documentary Name is Gale's Papers. The official name is MS Col 245, Gale James Scarth Papers. The papers consist mainly of holograph notes for and drafts and typescripts of Gale's works about Korea and his translations of English and Korean texts. In addition, the collection contains correspondence, commonplace books, diaries, the diary of his- second wife, Korean manuscripts collected by Gale, and published articles. The material dates from his work as a Presbyterian missionary in Korea(1888~1927) and from his retirement in England(1927~1937). The documentary Inclusive dates is 1888~1937, Extent is 24 boxes and 8.23 meters. Accession number is 87.046, Gift of George M. Gale in 1987. • Purpose : The genetic disturbance of galactosemia is expressed as a cellular deficiency of either galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase(GALT) or galactokinase(GALK) or UDP galactose 4-epimerase(GALE). To find-out the pattern of galactosemia in Korea, we retrospectively analyzed cases of galactosemia detected by neonatal screening program. Methods : We analyzed medical records of patients who visited Soonchunhyang University Hospital at age of 1 month after showing abnormalities in neonatal screening of galactosemia. For accurate diagnosis, galactose was measured by enzyme immunoassay(EIA) and fluorophotometer, also galactose-1-phosphate by fluorophotometer. Enzyme activities of GALK, GALT and GALE in RBC and galactose-1-phosphate were measured by radioisotope assay(RIA). Beutler test were done. Patients went on a lactose-free diet and follow-up tests for galactose, galactose-1-phosphate level and enzyme activity were performed. Results : 10 patients(male : 6, female : 4) were diagnosed as galactosemia. Two patients had GALK deficiency and two had GALT deficiency. Six were GALE deficient showing the largest number. In two patients with GALK deficiency, GALT and GALE activities were normal but GALK activities showed respectively reduced activity. For GALT deficiency, two patients had low GALT activity in RBC and showed genotype of Duarte 2/G(galactosemia) in DNA analysis. In one patient, GALT activity was normal. Three patients seemed to be heterozygote state of GALE deficiency according to GALE activity levels. Four patients showed GALK hyperactivity. Conclusion : GALE deficiency provided the highest number. After lactose-free diet, galactose and galactose-1-phosphate were normaly maintained. Neonatal screening on galactosemia is essential for preventing life-threatening symptoms and an accurate diagnosis is needed for finding out the type of galactosemia which is important for prognosis.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate translated individual words in J. S. Gale's "Choon Yang" in comparison with its original OkJoongHwa("獄中花") while referring to early modern bilingual dictionaries and missionaries' ethnography. Gale faced a lot of translation difficulties because the source text had a very different cultural system from the object text. OkJoongHwa was a Korean pansori novel which meant it included many Korean characteristics. However, Gale considered its Korean characteristics were deeply connected with Chinese classics. Even famous people and place names cited from the Chinese classics in OkJoongHwa represented the Korean thinking. Gale tried to faithfully translate the source text as much as possible whether the words were Chinese or Korean. In this paper, we deal with mostly various translation aspects of the Chinese-letter words in OkJoongHwa. Gale's first method to translate words made of Chinese Character is transliteration, the examples of which are the name of Chinese famous people and places, and Chinese poems. The second method is to parallel transliteration and English interpretation equivalent to the Chinese Character. The examples are the names of main characters like "Spring Fragrance or Choonyang," "Mongyong, or Dream-Dragon" and in his translation of word play in Osa (Commissioner), or Kamsa (Governor), kaiksa (a dead beggar). The third is literal translation of Chinese idiomatic phrases as Gale translated 侵魚落雁 into "She'd make the fishes to sink and the wild-geese to drop from the sky." The fourth is a little free translation of the title of public office, the various names of Korean yamen servants and the unique Korean clothing and ornaments. We expect Gale's many translation difficulties as we can see the translated long list of yamen clerks and Korean clothing and ornaments. After our investigation of his translation practices in "Choon Yang" we conclude that he tried to translate its literary language very faithfully though he could not avoid inevitable loss caused by the cultural difference involved in two languages. Gale's "Choon Yang" contributed to introducing the uniqueness of the classical Korean novel and Korean culture to the world more than any other English translation works of that time through his faithful translation.

  • KMA (Korea Meteorological Society) and RSMC (Regional Specialized Meteorological Center) Tokyo - Typhoon Center isue 15/30 m/s radii in the TC (tropical cyclone) advisory for the information on the TC size. Meanwhile, JTWC Beaufort wind force scale, 34 kt and 64 kt correspond to the 'gale' and 'hurricane'. A ned to identify the range of the gale/hurricane wind from the TC bulletin of RSMC Tokyo or KMA that contains only 15/30 m/s radi motivates this study. An algorithm for estimating the radius of gale/huricane wind is developed by utilizing Holland's empirical formula on TC's wind-pressure relationship.

  • Across the world, the industrialization has increased the frequency of climate anomaly. The size of damage due to recent natural disasters is growing large and fast, and the human damage and economic loss due to disasters are consistently increasing. Urbanization has a structure vulnerable to natural disasters. Therefore, in order to reduce damage from natural disasters, both hardware and software approaches should be utilized. Currently, however, the development of a statistical access process for 'analysis of disaster occurrence factor' and 'prediction of damage costs' for disaster prevention and overall disaster management is inadequate. In case of local governments, overall disaster management system is not established, or even if it is established, unscientific classification system and management lead to low utility of natural statistics of disaster year book. Therefore, in order to minimize disaster damage and for rational disaster management, the disaster damage survey process should be improved. This study selected gale as the focused analysis target among natural disasters recorded in disaster year book such as storm, torrential rain, gale, high seas, and heavy snow, and analyzed disaster survey process. Based on disaster year book, the gale damage size was analyzed and the issues occurring from the correlation of gale and damage amount were examined, so as to suggest an improvement plan for reliable natural disaster information collection and systematic natural disaster damage survey.

  • In this paper, we propose Ant-Q learning Algorithm[1], which uses the habits of biological ants, to find a new way to solve Stable Marriage Problem(SMP)[3] presented by Gale-Shapley[2]. The issue of SMP is to find optimum matching for a stable marriage based on their preference lists (PL). The problem of Gale-Shapley algorithm is to get a stable matching for only male (or female). We propose other way to satisfy various requirements for SMP. ACS(Ant colony system) is an swarm intelligence method to find optimal solution by using phermone of ants. We try to improve ACS technique by adding Q learning[9] concept. This Ant-Q method can solve SMP problem for various requirements. The experiment results shows the proposed method is good for the problem.

  • PWR-GALE Code is a computerized mathematical model for calculating the releases of radioactive material in gaseous and liquid effluents from PWRs. In PWR-GALE Code, Auxiliary building iodine removal efficiency, one of the code input data, did not reflect adequately the new design of KSNP which has two auxiliary buildings(PAB and SAB). In this study, we developed a revised method how to correct iodine removal efficiency in KSNP. And newly proposed methodology through case study using Ul-Jin 5, 6 design data was verified.

  • The Debreu-Gale-Nikaido theorem [2] is a potential tool to prove the existence of a market equilibrium price. Walras' law is of a quantitative nature (i.e. it measures the value of the total excess demand), and it is interesting to note that the existence result holds true under some qualitative assumptions. In fact, the Debreu-Gale-Nikaido theorem states that the continuity of the excess demand function and Walras' law has the following implication : For some price and corresponding value of the excess demand function, it is not possible to respond with a new price system such that the value at the new price of every element in the value of the demand function associated with the old price system is strictly positive.

  • Objective: An initial RNA-Sequencing study revealed that UDP-galactose-4-epimerase (GALE) was one of the most promising candidates for milk protein concentration in Chinese Holstein cattle. This enzyme catalyzes the interconversion of UDP-galactose and UDP-glucose, an important step in galactose catabolism. To further validate the genetic effect of GALE on milk protein traits, genetic variations were identified, and genotypes-phenotypes associations were performed. Methods: The entire coding region and the 5'-regulatory region (5'-UTR) of GALE were re-sequenced using pooled DNA of 17 unrelated sires. Association studies for five milk production traits were performed using a mixed linear animal model with a population encompassing 1,027 Chinese Holstein cows. Results: A total of three variants in GALE were identified, including two novel variants (g.2114 A>G and g.2037 G>A) in the 5'-UTR and one previously reported variant (g.3836 G>C) in an intron. All three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were associated with milk yield (p<0.0001), fat yield (p = 0.0006 to <0.0001), protein yield (p = 0.0232 to <0.0001) and protein percentage (p<0.0001), while no significant associations were detected between the SNPs and fat percentage. A strong linkage disequilibrium (D' = 0.96 to 1.00) was observed among all three SNPs, and a 5 Kb haplotype block involving three main haplotypes with GAG, AGC, and AGG was formed. The results of haplotype association analyses were consistent with the results of single locus association analysis (p<0.0001). The phenotypic variance ratio above 3.00% was observed for milk protein yield that was explained by SNP-g.3836G >C. Conclusion: Overall, our findings provided new insights into the polymorphic variations in bovine GALE gene and their associations with milk protein concentration. The data indicate their potential uses for marker-assisted breeding or genetic selection schemes.
