  • We have investigated the recent star formation history of the nearby galaxies using the SDSS optical and Galex UV data. To everyone's surprise, we found that roughly 30 percent of elliptical galaxies had a residual star formation in the last billion years, suggesting that residual star formation has been common even in ellipticals. Galaxy evolution models based on semi-analytic prescriptions including AGN feedback reasonably reproduce the star formation properties of elliptical galaxies. However, we found that the current galaxy models miserably fail to reproduce the star formation properties of satellite disc galaxies in cluster environments. Satellite disc galaxies in models are overly star-formation quenched in comparison to observation. Detailed investigations led us to conclude that this is due to the use of inaccurate prescriptions for the gas content evolution in the model. I present a solution to the problem by adopting more realistic physical prescriptions.

  • Constraining physical (or stellar population) properties - such as stellar mass, star-formation rate, stellar population age, and dust-extinction - of galaxies from observation is crucial in the study of galaxy evolution. This is very challenging especially for high-redshift galaxies, and a widely-used method to estimate physical properties of high-redshift galaxies is to compare their photometric spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to spectral templates from stellar population synthesis models. I will show that the SED-fitting results of high-redshift galaxies are strongly dependent on the assumed forms of star-formation histories. I will also present the results of SED-fitting analysis of observed Lyman-break galaxies which show that parametric models with gradually increasing star-formation histories provide better estimates of physical parameters of high-redshift (z>3) star-forming galaxies than traditionally-used exponentially declining star-formation histories. This result is also consistent with the predictions from the modern galaxy formation models.

  • We estimate the enclosed mass profile in the central 10 pc of the Milky Way by analyzing the infrared photometry and the velocity observations of dynamically relaxed stellar population in the Galactic center. HST/NICMOS and Gemini Adaptive Optics images in the archive are used to obtain the number density profile, and proper motion and radial velocity data were compiled from the literature to find the velocity dispersion profile assuming a spherical symmetry and velocity isotropy. From these data, we calculate the the enclosed mass and density profiles in the central 10 pc of the Galaxy using the Jeans equation. Our improved estimates can better describe the exact evolution of the molecular clouds and star clusters falling down to the Galactic center, and constrain the star formation history of the inner part of the Galaxy.

  • Recent studies of galaxy clusters have shown that the galaxy clusters in dense environment tend to have lower star formation rate in local universe with z < 1. However, this correlation is not significant in galaxy clusters with z > 1. The study of galaxy clusters around z=1 can yield insight into cosmological galaxy evolution. Nevertheless, the identification of galaxy clusters beyond the scope of immediate local universe requires wide field data in optical and near-infrared bands. By incorporating data from Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey(CFHTLS) and Infrared Medium-Deep Survey(IMS), the photometric redshifts of galaxies in CFHTLS W2 field were calculated. Using spatial distribution and photometric redshifts, the galaxies in the field were divided into redshift bins. The image of each redshift bin was analyzed by measuring the number density within proper distance of 1Mpc. By comparing high density regions in consecutive redshift bins, we identified the cluster candidates and mapped the large-scale structure within the CFHTLS W2 field.

  • Jellyfish galaxies show spectacular features such as star-forming knots and tails due to strong ram-pressure stripping in galaxy clusters. Thus, jellyfish galaxies are very useful targets to investigate the effects of ram-pressure stripping on the star formation activity in galaxies. Integral field spectroscopy (IFS) studies are the best way to study star formation in jellyfish galaxies, but they have been limited to those in low-mass galaxy clusters until now. In this study, we present a Gemini GMOS/IFU study of three jellyfish galaxies in very massive clusters (M_200 > 10^15 Mo). The host clusters (Abell 2744, MACSJ0916.1-0023, and MACSJ1752.0+4440) are X-ray luminous and dynamically unstable, suggesting that ram-pressure stripping in these clusters is much stronger than in low-mass clusters. We present preliminary results of star formation rates, kinematics, dynamical states, and ionization mechanisms of our sample galaxies and discuss how ram-pressure stripping relates with the star formation activity of jellyfish galaxies in massive clusters.

  • I will report recent progress in understanding properties of stellar and interstellar components of the Milky Way Galaxy on the two extremes - ongoing star formation activities in the Galactic center and stellar relics in the halo. Properties of the interstellar medium in the Galactic center and their relationship with star formation activities will be discussed based on by far the largest mid-IR spectroscopic data set in this region. Correlations between stellar kinematics and metallicities in the halo will be presented, along with a discussion on the estimation of fundamental stellar parameters from a set of empirically calibrated isochrones.

  • Early-type dwarf galaxies are the most numerous galaxies in dense environments, making them ideal probes of the mechanisms that govern galaxy formation and evolution. Despite the common picture of an early-type dwarf galaxy as a quiescent one with no star formation and little gas, recent systematic investigations of early-type dwarf galaxies in the cluster revealed an unexpected variety among these apparently simple objects. In this talk, I review intriguing complexity of early-type dwarf galaxies in the cluster. I will also briefly introduce a new catalog of galaxies in the Virgo cluster using SDSS data, extended Virgo Cluster Catalog (EVCC).

  • Late-type galaxies falling into a cluster would evolve being influenced by the interactions with both the cluster and the nearby cluster member galaxies. Most numerical studies, however, tend to focus on the effects of the former with little work done on those of the later. We thus perform numerical study on the evolution of a late-type galaxy falling radially toward the cluster center interacting with neighbouring early-type galaxies, using N-body, hydrodynamical simulations. Based on the information about the typical galaxy encounters obtained by using the galaxy catalog of Coma cluster, we run the simulations for the cases where a Milky Way Galaxy-like late-type galaxy, flying either edge-on or face-on, experiences six consecutive collisions with twice more massive early-type galaxies having hot gas in their halos. Our simulations show that the evolution of the late-type galaxy can be significantly affected by the high-speed multiple collisions with the early-type galaxies, such as on the cold gas content and the star formation activity, particularly through the hydrodynamic interactions between the cold disk and the hot gas halos. By comparing our simulation results with those of others, we claim that the role of the galaxy-galaxy interactions on the evolution of late-type galaxies in clusters could be comparable with that of the galaxy-cluster interactions, depending on the dynamical history.

  • We study galaxy evolution with the large-scale environment with confirmed galaxy clusters from multi-object spectroscopy (MOS) observation. The observation was performed with Inamori Magellan Areal Camera and Spectrograph (IMACS) mounted on the 6.5 m Magellan/Baade telescope in Las Campanas Observatory. With the MOS observation, we spectroscopically confirm 34 galaxy clusters, including three galaxy clusters discovered in Kim et al. (2016) and 11 of them have halo mass of > 1014.5 M. Among the confirmed clusters, 12 galaxy clusters are part of large-scale structure at z ~ 0.9, and their size stretches to 40 Mpc co-moving scale. In this study, we checked the 'web feeding model,' which postulates that more linked (with their environment) galaxy clusters have less quenched populations by investigating the correlation between properties of confirmed galaxy clusters and the large-scale structure environment. Lastly, we found that galaxy clusters that make up the large-scale structure have larger and widely spread values of total star formation density (ΣSFR/Mhalo) than typical clusters at similar redshifts.
