This study classified outer-ring galaxies using 25,308 galaxies within z=0.05 from the SDSS DR7, which are larger than Rpet>6 arcsec and whose minor-to-major axis ratio (b/a)<0.6. We selected 531 galaxies that have ring-like structures by visual inspection of the color images of 25,308 galaxies; these galaxies with ring-like structures served as a primary sample from which we selected 90 outer-ring galaxies. The final sample of 69 outer-ring galaxies was selected by examining the photometric properties of the candidate galaxies. Their properties were determined by conducting surface photometry on their u, g, r, i, and z images. The frequency of the outer-ring galaxies was found to be 0.3% of the local galaxies. We examined the environment of the outer-ring galaxies using two measures of environment, namely, the projected distance to the nearest-neighbor galaxy and the local background density. We did not observe any notable difference between outer-ring and other galactic environments.
We have conducted a V, I, J, and H surface photometry of a barred galaxy NGC 4314 to analyze the morphology and luminosity distribution of the galaxy. By applying a semi two-dimensional profile decomposition method, we derived the luminosity fractions and the scale lengths of the three distinct components, bulge, disk, and bar: $L_b {\approx}0.35,\;L_d{\approx}0.35,\;L_{bar}{\approx}0.30,\;r_e{\approx}22",\;r_o {\approx} 50"$, and a $\approx$ 60". The bulge of NGC 4314 seems to be triaxial due to the isophotal twists but its luminosity distribution is well approximated by the $r^{1/4}$-law.
We present near-infrared photometric properties of red supergiant stars (RSGs) in three galaxies NGC 4449, NGC 5055 and NGC 5457. The near-infrared imaging data of WFCAM UKIRT were used and combined with optical archive data to identify the RSGs in the galaxies. We found that the RSGs can be identified from the foreground Galactic stars in (i-K, ri) colour-colour diagram. The effective temperatures and luminosities of the identified RSGs are estimated from JHK photometry using MARCS model. In the H-R diagram, the majority of RSGs in the galaxies are distributed between $logL/L{\odot}=4.8$ and 5.7, and their effective temperature and luminosities agree with the current evolutionary tracks with masses in the range $9-30M{\odot}$. We also compared the spatial distribution of RSGs with the HII regions. A tight spatial correlation between RSGs and HII region was found in NGC 4449 and NGC 5457. We do not find a clear metallicity dependance on the RSG effective temperature in the three galaxies, but the maximum luminosity of the three galaxies is constant at $logL/L{\odot}{\sim}5.6$. Additional spectroscopy data, including photometry are essential to examine whether the physical properties of RSGs change with metallicity.
We present a photometric study of the globular clusters (GCs) in the Virgo giant elliptical galaxy M86 based on Washington $CT_1$ images. The colors of the GCs in M86 show a bimodal distribution with a blue peak at ($C-T_1$) = 1.30 and a red peak at ($C-T_1$) = 1.72. The spatial distribution of the red GCs is elongated similar to that of the stellar halo, while that of the blue GCs is roughly circular. The radial number density profile of the blue GCs is more extended than that of the red GCs. The radial number density profile of the red GCs is consistent with the surface brightness profile of the M86 stellar halo. The GC system has a negative radial color gradient, which is mainly due to the number ratio of the blue GCs to the red GCs increasing as galactocentric radius increases. The bright blue GCs in the outer region of M86 show a blue tilt: the brighter they are, the redder their mean colors get. These results are discussed in comparison with other Virgo giant elliptical galaxies.
We performed VRI CCD surface photometry of three spiral galaxies of HCG10 in order to understand the effect of interactions in the compact group. The morphology of the largest member NGC 536 seems to be normal but its bulge is thought to be of an oblate spheroid. The central surface brightness of the disk of NGC 536 is much fainter than that of disks of nearby spiral galaxies. The morphologies of NGC 531 and NGG 542 appear to be affected by interactions which lead to a warped disk in NGC 531 and a slightly bent disk in NGC 542. NGC 531 have a boxy bulge and a Freeman Type II disk both of which strongly suggest the presence of a bar in the galaxy. There is a break in the slope of the luminosity profile of NGC 542 which is dominated by the disk component.
We investigate the role of galaxy environment in the evolution of individual galaxies through the AKARI observations of the merging galaxy cluster A2255. MIR diagnostics using N3-S11 colors are adopted to select star-forming galaxies and galaxies in transition between star-forming galaxies and quiescent galaxies. We do not find particular enhancement of star formation rates as a function of galaxy environment, reflected in cluster-centric distance and local surface density of galaxies. Instead, the locations of intermediate MIR-excess galaxies (-1.2 < N3 - S11 < 0.2) show that star-forming galaxies are transformed into passive galaxies in the substructures of A2255, where the local surface density of galaxies is relatively high.
The photometry is reported for galaxies in two clusters A1983, 2065 with redshifts 0.046, 0.072 respectively. The luminosity segregation is observed only within a magnitude from the brightest galaxy. The alignment of the galaxy major axis is observed in the Corona Borealis cluster. The intermediate distance clusters (0.05 < z < 0.15) will be studied by CCD mounted on 125cm RCh and 70cm meniscus type telescopes.
One day, a galaxy study suddenly came to me and became a friend of 40 years. The study of galaxies, which began with surface photometry of nearby galaxies, ended up in galaxy morphology through chemical and dynamical evolution of galaxies. All that deviated from the study of galaxies was the study of the open clusters. So it seems to me that I devoted my entire life to the study of galaxies. The most memorable one is the observation at Sobaeksan Observatory. Even though the heavy snow fell, I climbed Sobaeksan to meet galaxies. Galaxies observed at Kiso Observatory, DAO, and BOAO are now beyond memory, but I still enjoy seeing them. There are many memories, but the biggest pleasure I've had in my galaxy studies is when I've encountered the galactic conformity between host and its satellite galaxies. Eureka! Now the night sky is changing from the object of study to the object of awe. I will share this joy.
We present space-based near-IR (NIR) and optical photometry of globular clusters (GCs) of 16 early-type galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo Clusters. The NIR imaging data for the nearby galaxies was acquired with the IR Channel of the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3/IR) in the F110W ($J_{110}$) and F160W ($H_{160}$) bandpasses. We introduce the full sample of our WFC3/IR program, describe data reductions and photometric measurements including GC candidate selection criteria, and then show selected GCs' color-magnitude diagrams. The tilted features in the diagrams related to the morphological types of host galaxies are discussed in the context of galaxy formation and evolution histories. Combining F475W ($g_{475}$) and F850LP ($z_{850}$) data taken from the Advanced Camera for Surveys Virgo and Fornax Cluster Surveys with our NIR data, we investigate the bimodality in optical-NIR color distribution and the nonlinear feature of the optical-NIR color relation as a function of optical color for these extragalactic GC systems.
