Adsorption of melamine was examined using columns packed with granular activated carbon (GAC). Raw GAC was sieved with 20, 40, 60 and 80 mesh to determine the influence of adsorbent particle size on reaction and diffusion. The mass ratio of the adsorption capacity of GAC for melamine ranged from 9.19 to 11.06%, and adsorption rates increased with decreasing particle size within this range. Rate constants between 3.295 ~ 4.799 $min^{-1}$ were obtained using a pseudofirst-order equation that was used to determine adsorption kinetics. A surface diffusion model was adapted to take into account the unsteady-state equation of a spherical adsorbent by converting the surface concentration from a constant to a variable governed by a dispersion equation. The calculated values were fit with the experimental results by using the diffusion coefficients as regression parameters. The modified equation exhibited a more precise agreement with respect to the sum of the absolute error (SAE).
The optimum design and preliminary cost estimations of air stripping towers ASTs with granular activated carbon adsorption (GAC) systems as the off-gas treatment were done and compared to liquid-phase GAC system. The optimum design and preliminary cost estimations were done for either single or multicomponent systems. A computer program was developed for this study. 15 single compounds and their multicomponent systems were studies. Even with off-gas treatment, AST was generally a less expensive process for treatment of volatile organics than liquid-phase GAC system. Treatment costs of small systems were sensitive to system capacity. Accumulative effect of treatment costs was found in multicomponent systems. The cost of a multicomponent system was highly dependent on the least strippable component in ASTs even with gas-phase GAC or the least adsorbable component in liquid-phase GAC system.
The use of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) and naturally occurring silica (Sand) as filtration media in water and waste water treatment systems is very common. While GAC offers the additional functionality of being an "adsorptive" filter for dissolved organics it is also more expensive. In this paper we present an experimental evaluation of the performance of a bed of GAC for colloid removal and compare the same with that from an equivalent bed of Sand. The experiments are performed in an "intermittent" manner over extended time, to "simulate" performance over the life of the filter bed. The experiments were continued till a significant drop in water flow rate through the bed was observed. A novel "deposition" and "detachment" rate based transient mathematical model is developed. It is observed that the data from the experiments can be explained by the above model, for different aqueous phase electrolyte concentrations. The model "parameters", namely the "deposition" and "detachment" rates are evaluated for the 2 filter media studied. The model suggests that the significantly better performance of GAC in colloid filtration is probably due to significantly lower detachment of colloids from the same. While the "deposition" rates are higher for GAC, the "detachment" rates are significantly lower, which makes GAC more effective than sand for colloid removal by over an order of magnitude.

The global regulator, GacS (global antibiotic and cyanide sensor kinase), was required for the increased resistance to hydrogen peroxide occurring as cultures of the rhizobacterium, P. chlororaphis O6, matured. Specific stationary-phase peroxidase and catalase isozymes were absent in the GacS mutant, whereas a manganese-superoxide dismutase isozyme was expressed earlier and to a great extent than wild type. In the wild type cell, transcript accumulation of rpoS was higher in late logarithmic-phase cells than cells from mid logarithmic- or stationary-phase. Transcripts from rpoS in the GacS mutant were reduced in each of these growth phases compared to the wild type expression. The down stream sequence from rpoS lacked sequences encoding a small RNA, rsmZ, found in other pseudomonads and implicated in control of genes activated by the GacS system. These findings suggest that GacS-mediated regulation of RpoS plays role in control of oxidative stress in P. chlororaphis O6 by as yet an unknown mechanism.
A simulated wastewater containing the dye Rhodamine B (RhB) was electrolytically treated using a three-dimensional electrode reactor equipped with granular activated carbon (GAC) as particle electrode. The effect of type of packing material (GAC, ACF, Nonwoven fabric fiber coated with activated carbon), amounts of GAC packing (25-100 g), current (0.5-3 A) and electrolyte concentration (0.5-3 g/l) was evaluated. Experimental results showed that performance for RhB decolorization of the 3 three-dimensional electrodes lie in: GAC > Nonwoven fabric fiber > ACF. When considered RhB decolorization, oxidants concentration and electric power, optimum GAC dosage was 50 g. Generated concentration of 3 oxidants ($ClO_2$, free Cl, $H_2O_2$) was increased with increase of applied current, however optimum current for RhB degradation was 2.5 A. The oxidants concentration was increased with increase of NaCl concentration and optimum NaCl dosage for RhB degradation was 1.5 g/l.

E. intermedium Blocontrol activity of a P. chlororaphis rhizobacteium O6, depends to the synthesis of extracellular secondary metabolites and exoenzymes, thought to antagonize the pathogenicity of a variety of phytopathogenic fungi. The production of secondary metabolites and exoenzymes in O6, depends essentially on the GacS-mediated signal transduction pathway, which activates largely unknown signal transduction pathway. To exploit the GacS-mediated signal transdcution pathway involved in activation of ph genes that are necessary for biosynthesis of phenazine from P. chlororaphis O6, we cloned and sequenced the phz operon, rpoS gene encoding stationary specific sigma factor, ppx gene encoding polyphosphatase, and lon gene encoding ion protease. Expression of each gene in wild type and GacS mutant were analyzed by RT-PCR. Transcripts from rpoS, phzI enconing acylhomoserine lactone (AHL) synthase, and ph structural genes in the GacS mutant were reduced in each of these growth phases compared to the wild type. The GacS or Lon mutant was found to be deficient in the production of phenzines, exoenzymes, and the acylhomoserine lactone. These mutants were not complemented by ph operon and addition of exogenous AHL. These results indicate that the GacS global regulatory systems controls phenazine production at multiple levels. Future research will focus to identifying the GacS-mediated regulatory cascade involving in production of phenazine in P. chlororaphis.
Since 1989, Advanced drinking water treatment processes began to build in Korea, especially the water treatment plants around the Nak-dong river stream due to sequential pollutant accidents. Moreover, Advanced drinking water treatment processes, ozone and GAC, are again to be built in water treatment plants around Han-river stream to control taste and odor, micro pollutants. However, there are still a lot of discussion to decide the processes to apply for advanced treatment. Thus there are still need to understand clearly on the cost evaluation of each advanced treatment processes. The cost evaluation was accomplished based on the data of six water treatment plants which are currently being either operating or constructing. Exceptionally, PAC(Powdered Activated Carbon) process was evaluated with cost estimation from construction company. The capital cost per unit volume of ozone process was significantly decreased as the treatment capacity increased. The capital cost was in the order of GAC, ozone and GAC. The operation cost decreased in the order of PAC, GAC and ozone. The total cost considering present value shows that ozone process covers 84% of ozone and GAC process for $30,000m^3/d$ capacity while it covers less than 35% for over 140 thousands $m^3/d$ capacity. Comparing GAC only, and ozone/GAC process, ozone/GAC process is more cost effective for high capacity water treatment plant.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation of oxalic acid by manganese (Mn) doped-granular activated carbon (GAC). In order to observe the effect of the amount of Mn doped on GAC, catalysts were manufactured by varying the impregnated Mn concentration. In this paper, the following had labeled all sorts kinds of Mn-doped GAC were labeled with suitable names according to the amount (mM) of the concentration of dipping solution: They were each named as 'Mn20', 'Mn50', 'Mn100' and 'Mn200'. These experiments were performed in a batch reactor (0.5 L) and a semi-batch reactor (1 L) and Mn-free GAC was used as a blank catalyst. The ozone decay properties of each manufactured catalyst were firstly investigated to find out the reactivity between the aqueous ozone and the catalysts. Oxalic acid removal by catalytic ozonation was then performed to demonstrate the oxidative efficiencies of each catalyst.
Ozone/GAC and ozone-GAC processes were introduced for treatment of humic acid, which is representative refractory organic compound. The treatment efficiencies of humic acid in each process were analyzed in pH variation, DOC removal, and $UV_{254}$ decrease. $UV_{254}$ decrease in all processes was comparatively high with efficiency over 92%. $UV_{254}$ decrease in ozone alone process was 85%. DOC removal in Ozone-GAC process was the highest with 75%. Removal by Ozone/GAC, Ozone alone processes were 71% and 33% respectively.
Granular activated carbon (GAC) has been identified as a best available technology (BAT) by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for removal disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) were used to investigate four types of carbon (F400, Norit1240, Norit40S, and Aquasorb1500) for their affinity to absorb natural organic matter (NOM). DOC, $UV_{254}$, and Total dissolved nitrogen (TON) concentrations were measured in the column effluent to track GAC breakthrough. DOC and $UV_{254}$ breakthrough occurred at around 3500 bed volumes (BVs) of operation for all GACs investigated. The $UV_{254}$ breakthrough curves showed 33% to 48% at 8000 BVs, when the DOC was 48% to 65%. All GACs showed greater removal in DOC than $UV_{254}$. The NORIT1240 GAC was determined to have the highest adsorption capacity for DOC and $UV_{254}$. The removal of nitrate (NOTN) had not broken through over BVs. The initial TON breakthrough curves were started around 50%, when the DOC breakthrough was only 10 % at 500 BVs. The curves were gradually increased after 3500 BVs and approximately 69% through 81% of TON breakthrough occurred at 8000 BVs. All of the GACs were able to remove TON, in the case of this investigation the majority of the TON was present as DON. Because nitrate nitrogen was seldom removed and ammonium nitrogen ($NH_3-N$) was not detected in the effluent from RSSCTs even though raw water. The carbon usage rate of DOC was from 2 to 6 times less than that of TON. The NORIT1240 GAC demonstrated the best performance in terms of DOC removal, while the F400 GAC was best in terms of TON removal. Excitation emission matrix(EEM) analysis was used to show that GAC adsorption successfully removed most of Humic-like DOC and Fulvic-like DOCs. However, soluble microbial product(SMP)-like DOC in the absence of raw water were detected in the NORIT40S and Aquasorb1500 GAC. The authors assumed that this results is due probably to the part of GAC in the RSSCT which was converted into biological activated carbon(BAC). To compare with organics removal by GAC according to preloading, the virgin GACs had readily accessible sites that were adsorbed DOC more rapidly than preloaded GACs, but the TDN removal had not showed differences between those GACs.
