  • Citizen participation or resident participation is perceived as an effective way to correspond to the diverse urban problems, especially in the area of residential environment improvement projects and community activities. As the leading city of the Honam region and a core middle city leading the development of the southwestern region, Gwangju city is planning and under-developing new Housing Complexes and Urban Renewal Projects. The purpose of this study is to identify the perception of Gwangju citizens on resident participation in community activities to suggest diverse strategies for improving quality of citizen's life and making better living environment. For the research purpose, 1,380 questionnaires were distributed to the Gwangju citizens who live in 5 autonomous districts -Dong-gu, Seo-gu, Nam-gu, Buk-gu, and Gwangsan-gu- and 601 were used in data analysis. Although citizens in Dong-gu showed the lowest settlement consciousness, they required the highest level of need for resident self-help activities. Contrastingly, Seo-gu showed the highest level of settlement consciousness and the lowest need for resident self-help activities. Based on the results, high quality community facility should be provided to promote residential satisfaction and consciousness of residential participation and self-help activity must be improved. And also, diverse strategies for resident participation including development of resident education programs and search for regional resources should be covered in further research.

  • The purpose of this study was to find common characteristics in everyday landscape cognition that the residents share and to restore the resulting characteristics through citizen-participatory town design. Through the residents participatory workshop supported by the Gwangju Buk-gu District Autonomy and Citizen Academy of Gwangju YMCA, 304 people from eight administrative districts participated in three programs. In each program, photographed landscape images representing everyday conditions of the townscape were presented in several ways: in program 1, the residents' mental map was studied; in program 2, landscape images of real places were matched to locations on a map; and in program 3, the landscapes were scored on a scale from 1 to 5 according to five descriptive categories. The elements that were recognized as common landscape features were public facilities, pedestrian spaces, school areas, and parks and natural green spaces. Additional results including recognition of the participants affection for the village and a common landscape image shared by the people, as inhabitants looked around at the space of their own lives. It seems possible that more creative townscapes can be created by residents through participatory programs.

  • This study suggested a citizen science based model to enhance the efficacy of the managing invasive alien plants and examined whose applicability in 3 Wetland Protected Areas (Jangrok of Gwangju metropolitan city, Madongho of Goseong in South Gyeongsang Province, and Ungok of Gochang in North Jeolla Province). The process consists of (a) collecting citizen scientist including local residents of 3 protected areas and piling up information on the 4 species of invasive alien plants (Sicyos angulatus L., Solanum carolinense L., Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. and Solidago altissima L) in a information platform Ecological Information Bank (EcoBank) from September 18th to October 31th, (b) constructing distribution map containing the location and density (3 phases: individual-population-community) of target plants, (c) providing distribution map to Environment Agency and local government who is principal agent of managing invasive alien plants in 3 protected areas, and from whom (d) surveying applications of the distribution map and opinion for future supplement. As a result, citizen science based monitoring should be continued to complement the nationwide information for the field management of invasive alien plants with the expansion of target species (total 17 plants species that Ministry of Environment in South Korea designated) and period of monitoring in a year to increase the usability of surveyed information from citizen science. In the long run, effectiveness of the management of invasive alien species applied by citizen science should be reviewed including efficacy of field management process from citizen's participating in elimination project of invasive alien plants and time series distribution followed by the management of the species.

  • This study suggested methodology of Citizen Science as a tool of ecosystem conservation and management to achieve Wetland Protected Area (WPA) Conservation Plan and examined whose applicability in 3 WPAs (Jangrok of Gwangju metropolitan city, Madongho of Goseong in South Gyeongsang Province, and Incheongang estuary of Gochang in North Jeolla Province). It consists of a) figuring out main interests and stakeholder or beneficiaries of WPA and their information demand based on conservation, utilization, and management target in the WPA Conservation Plan, b) conducting research activities to gain outcome to address stakeholder's demand, and c) returning the research outcome to citizen scientists and making diffusion to the society. Based on the suggested method and process, citizen scientists conducted ecosystem monitoring (plants including Invasive Alien Plants, terrestrial insects, traces of mammals, discovering unknown wetland). As a result, citizen scientists contributed to collecting species information of 16 plans, 43 species of terrestrial insects, 5 mammals including Lutra lutra (Endangered Species I) and Prionailurus bengalensis (Endangered Species II). The authors constructed and provided distribution map of Invasive Alien Plants, which included information of location and density which citizen scientists registered, for Environment Agencies and local governments who manage 3 WPAs to aid data-based ecosystem policy, In further studies, not only accumulating research data and outcomes acquired from citizen science to suffice the policy demands but also deliberate reviewing policy applicability and social·economic ripple effect should be processed for the suggested Citizen Science in WPA to be settled down as a tool of ecosystem conservation and management.

  • 5.18 Gwangju Democratization Movement was approved as a legal democratization movement by president Kim Young Sam in May 1993 and was approved as a global recording inheritance by UNESCO in May 2011 for the honor of Gwangju citizens to be restored. However, assessment on this until today after 35 years of occurrence is not nationally unified and the mind of Gwangju maybe only remembered as pride by Gwangju. There are several factors of this continuing situation but this researcher thinks the biggest factor is that professionals reanalyzing the truth ascertainment fitting spirit of the times who are in charge of citizen education are intensively distributed in Jeolla-do and Seoul. Moreover, the journal unlikely assessing 5.18 have enemies in the assailant area during activity that unity is not taking place with divided assessments and trapped in Honam. This study judges that the reason the meaning of 5.18 is trapped in Honam and not nationally unified is because of the limit of "adversary system." Especially researchers who should analyze and explain this incident in a objective views are bias distributed (Gwangju Jeolla-do> Seoul>Gyeongnam) in hometown areas that the possibility of 5.18 meaning not being unified was focused. Academic research studies, journal writers, and publication locations are divided in this study to reveal they are bias distributed and reveal that there is possibility that this biased distribution of researches are becoming obstacles in overcoming regionality.

  • This paper surveys some researches to accomplish on bioinformatics. These researches wish to propose a database architecture combining a general view of bioinformatics data as a graph of data objects and data relationships, with the efficiency and robustness of data management and query provided by indexing and generic programming techniques. Here, these invert the role of the index, and make it a first-class citizen in the query language. It is possible to do this in a structured way, allowing users to mention indexes explicitly without yielding to a procedural query model, by converting functional relations into explicit functions. In the limit, the database becomes a graph, in which the edges are these indexes. Function composition can be specified either explicitly or implicitly as path queries. The net effect of the inversion is to convert the database into a hyperdatabase: a database of databases, connected by indexes or functions. The inversion approach was motivated by their work in biological databases, for which hyperdatabases are a good model. The need for a good model has slowed progress in bioinformatics.

  • This study aims to identify the effect of the mental health and leisure competence of senior citizen through participation in archery activity on satisfaction in their life. To achieve the purpose, the study interviewed members of the Archery and Sports Association living in Gwangju, Jeonnam and Jeonbuk using a questionnaire and collected 328 valid responses. The questions as measuring instruments such as leisure competence, depression, self-esteem, and satisfaction level which were developed by previous studies were revised for this study. For a statistics, a frequency analysis, a descriptive analysis, a correlation analysis, and a structural model analysis were conducted. As a result, first, the higher self-esteem of the subjects, the more they participated in archery and were satisfied with their life. Second, the lower depression they had, the more they participated in archery and were satisfied with their life. Third, as leisure competence of the subjects was not a main factor of archery participation, the related assumption was rejected. The mental health of the senior citizen such as self-esteem and depression was a factor of participation in archery and their satisfaction with their life grew higher through participation in archery.
