  • Mechanical and corrosion property of duplex stainless steel weldments made by the GTAW and SMAW process were studied. Fracture toughness, general and local corrosion resistance of GTAW and SMAW weldments were evaluated in terms of Charpy V notch impact test, anodic polarization diagram, pitting corrosion rate, respectively. SMA weld metal showed much lower impact toughness and higher ductile-brittle transition temperature than GTA weld metal. Fractographic and EDX analysis on fracture surface of SMA weld metal demonstrated the existence of (Si, Ti), oxide in large amounts. Potentiodynamic anodic polarization diagram of GMA weld metal showed much lower passive current density than SMA weld metal in 4% $H_2/SO_4$ solution. And pitting corrosion rate test showed the same tendency. Relating the microstructure, chemistry and property, it can be concluded that GTA weld metal gives better toughness due to lower oxygen content, i.e. lower inclusion content, and better corrosion resistance due to higher Pitting Index(PI) than SMA weld metal.

  • The effect of the welding speeds on the weld bead shape, microstructure, and mechanical properties in type 304 austenitic stainless steels was investigated by microscopic test, Erichsen test and tensile test. In this study welds were produced using autogeneous Direct Current Straight Polarity (DCSP) and pulsed current GTA welding. This study shows the ferrite content, ductility, tensile strength and elongation of high speed welds are decreased with increasing welding speed. The high speed welds exhibits satisfactory tensile strength, though the ductility is not good as that of the base metal.

  • Variable weld bead penetrations related to the base metal chemistry of stainless steels in GTA welding have been under constant investigations due to their industrial implications. It has been proposed that among other elements, the sulfur content of steels determines the weld pool geometry, particularly its penetration. It is suggested that the surface tension temperature gradient of steels becomes positive with appropriate dosing in sulfur and results in inward melt flow, propitious for deeper welds. However, the chemistry of industrial steels is complex due to the presence of multiple minor elements either deliberately added or remnant impurity traces. With this in view, investigations on 41 austenitic and nine martensitic stainless steels were carried to see if there existed any possible relation between the weld profile and some of the designated elements. The results suggest no direct correlation between sulfur or any other major or trace element and weld penetration. At first glance the results are contradictory to what is often asserted.

  • Currently knowledge of strain in welds has mainly been obtained from strain gage method; that is directly attaching the gage to the most of the material. The very flew non-contact methods are still in the early stage. One of the non-contact methods is by the use of the laser that has high-level of the accuracy for the measurement, and this laser also has excellent characteristics on which many studies for its applications are focused throughout the many fields. The paper is on the measurement of the strain caused by the characteristics and the temperature changes of the GTA welded zone employed with 3D ESPI system that is functionally modified through the laser ESPI system. This system may be applied the steel plate such as for the electronics, chemistry, flood instrument and electronic appliances.

  • This study aimed at exploiting low heat input characteristic of laser welding to effectively control grain coarsening in the fusion zone(FZ) and heat affected zone(HAZ) of 1.5mm thick 18wt% Cr ferritic stainless steel weld. The study demonstrated that as compared with gas tungsten arc welding(GTAW), laser welding brought about significant grain refinement in the FZ and HAZ. However, the impact absorbed energy of GTA weld was superior than that of laser weld because the strengthening effect during welding and cooling stage was higher In laser weld than that in GTA weld. The coarser grains in each weld than base metal resulted in an inferior toughness.

  • The weld quality of spacer grids in Pressurized Water Reactors(PWR) fuel is extremely important for the fuel assembly performance in the nuclear renter. The spacer grid welds are currently evaluated mainly by the metallographic examination although it reveals only cross-points which are welded by the laser beam. This experiment is also to compare the weldability of Zircaloy-4 spacer grids using by the GTA and laser beam. The effect of node geometries of spacer grids for GTAW and LBW has been studied and optimum conditions of spacer grid welding have been found. Microstructures and micro-hardness of GTA and laser beam welded zones have been also compared.

  • Gas tungsten arc welds on Al-4 wt% Cu alloys were investigated to determine effects of gravitational orientation on the weld solidification behavior. Outward convection flows in the parallel-down weld might be inhibited because of its reverse direction with respect to the gravity vector. This resulted in abnormal 'S' shape of the trailing s-1 interface and the solidification rate (Vs), which was receded toward the weld pool center. Significant influence of gravitational orientation resulted in the variation on the weld pool shape associated with convection flows, which in turn affected solidification orientation/morphology and the primary dendrite spacing(λ$_1$).
