  • The use of GPS receiver at outer space becomes common in low earth orbit. Recently most of satellites use GPS receiver as navigation solution for finding satellite position. However, the accuracy of navigation solution acquiring directly from GPS receiver is not enough in satellite application such as map generation. Post-processing concepts such as Precise Orbit Determination (POD) are recently applied to satellite data processing to improve satellite position accuracy. The POD uses raw measurement data instead of navigation solution of GPS receiver. The performance of raw measurement data depends on raw measurement data accuracy and tracking loop algorithm of GPS receiver. In this paper, a method for evaluating performance of raw measurement data is suggested. Test environment and procedure of the low earth orbit satellite acquiring for navigation solution of GPS receiver and navigation solution of POD are described. In addition, accuracy on navigation solution of GPS receiver, raw measurement data, and navigation solution of POD are analyzed. The proposed method can be applicable to general low earth orbit satellite.

  • The use of GPS receiver at outer space becomes common in low earth orbit. The KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-1 (KOMPSAT-1) which was launched in December 1999 has used GPS receiver's navigation solution to perform the Orbit Determination (OD) in the ground. At the circumstance of using only one ground station, the Orbit Determination using GPS receiver is good method. Because the accuracy of navigation solution acquiring directly from GPS receiver is not enough in satellite application such as map generation, post-processing concepts such as the Precise Orbit Determination (POD) are applied to satellite data processing to improve satellite position accuracy. The POD uses GPS receiver's raw measurement data instead of GPS receiver's navigation solution. The KOrea Multi- Purpose SATellite-2 (KOMPSAT-2) system newly uses the POD technique for large scale map generation. The satellite was launched in the end of July 2006. The satellite sends high resolution images in panchromatic band and multi-spectral bands to the ground. The satellite system uses GPS receivers as source of time synchronization and command reference in the satellite, provider of navigation solution for the OD, and provider of raw measurement data for the POD. In this paper, mechanical configuration and operations of the GPS receiver will be presented. The GPS data characteristics of the satellite such as time synchronization, command reference, the OD using GPS receiver's navigation solution, and the POD using GPS receiver's raw measurement data will be presented and analyzed. The enhancement of performance compared with it of the previous satellite will also be analyzed.

  • This study examined methods to enhance navigation performance and reduce the divergence of navigation solutions that may occur in the event of global positioning system (GPS) failure by integrating the GPS/inertial navigation system (INS) with the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic vector measurements of a magnetometer. A magnetic heading aiding method that employs a magnetometer has been widely used to enhance the heading performance in low-cost GPS/INS navigation systems with insufficient observability. However, in the case of GPS failure, wrong heading information may further accelerate the divergence of the navigation solution. In this study, a method of integrating the 3D magnetic vector measurements of a magnetometer is proposed as a countermeasure for the case where the GPS fails. As the proposed method does not require attitude information for integration unlike the existing magnetic heading aiding method, it is applicable even in case of GPS failure. In addition, the existing magnetic heading aiding method utilizes only one-dimensional information in the heading direction, whereas the proposed method uses the two-dimensional attitude information of the magnetic vector, thus improving the observability of the system. To confirm the effect of the proposed method, simulation was performed for the normal operation and failure situation of GPS. The result confirmed that the proposed method improved the accuracy of the navigation solution and reduced the divergence speed of the navigation solution in the case of GPS failure, as compared with that of the existing method.

  • The navigation and EDR(Event Data Recorder) have a different roles but also a lot of similar or common functions and elements. A representative element is a GPS. The GPS of navigation is a more higher than the that of EDR in performance. The high performance GPS has a very short initialization time and more accurate than the GPS of EDR. And the informations of OBD(On Board Diagnostics) is able to be shared in navigation and EDR. But these inter-working product between the navigation and EDR has been not yet shown. So, this paper is aimed to show how to interwork in two devices. We utilize USB bulk communication in two devices for inter-working. It is very simple ways and it could interwork in GPS, event video and ODB II data. It could be effective in cost competence and convenience. These was implemented by hardware and software and proved by the standard test.

  • This paper deals with quantitative analysis about the characteristics of GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) signals contaminated with multipath signals and day-to-day repeatability of the navigation solution and SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) caused by multipath signals using the collected data from GPS receiver installed on KSLV-I which was on standby on the launch pad at Naro Space Center. Since the GPS antennas, surrounding environments and GPS satellite orbits were very slightly changed with respect to the day, the repeating pattern of the solution and SNR caused by the multipath signals was verified from the collected data. Analytic result of the multipath effects and day-to-day repeatability of the navigation solution and SNR observed at the launch pad would be used for obtaining more stable performance of the GPS receiver when the satellite launch vehicles are on standby.

  • In this paper, Zero velocity UPdaTe (ZUPT) is implemented on the navigation system of Remotely Piloted Aircraft for GNSS denied environment. RPA's navigation system suffers from lack or loss of satellite signal while maintenance or ground test inside a hangar. Although some of the hangars install GPS repeaters for indoor tests, the anti-jamming equipment with array antenna blocks the repeater signal regarding them as hostile jamming signal. With ZUPT, an aircraft navigation system can be tested free from the divergence of navigation solution without line-of-sight satellites. The designed ZUPT aided centralized Kalman Filter is implemented on the Embedded GPS&INS and simulated with Captive Flight Test data. The simulation result shows stable navigation solution without GNSS updates.

  • In recent days, navigation technology becomes more important as location based service (LBS) such as E911 and telematics are considered as attractive business fields. Commercial LBS requires that navigation system should be inexpensive and available anytime and anywhere - indoors and outdoors. If we consider these requirements, it is out of question that GPS is the most favorite system in the world. However, GPS has a serious problem. The one is that GPS does not operate indoors well. This is because GPS satellites are about 20,000km above the ground so that indoor signals are too weak to be tracked in GPS receiver. And the other is that vertical accuracy is less than horizontal accuracy, because of GPS satellites' geometry. To solve these problems, many researches have been done around the world since 1990s. This paper is also one of them and we will introduce an excellent solution by use of pseudolite. Pseudolite is a kind of signal generator, which transmits GPS-like signal. So it is same as GPS satellite in ground. In this paper, we will propose the integrated navigation system of GPS and pseudolite and show the flight test results using RC airplane to proof our navigation system. As a result, we could improve the vertical accuracy of airplane into the horizontal accuracy.

  • This study presents a precise relative navigation algorithm using both laser and Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements in real time. The measurement model of the navigation algorithm between two spacecraft is comprised of relative distances measured by laser instruments and single differences of GPS pseudo-range measurements in spherical coordinates. Based on the measurement model, the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is applied to smooth the pseudo-range measurements and to obtain the relative navigation solution. While the navigation algorithm using only laser measurements might become inaccurate because of the limited accuracy of spacecraft attitude estimation when the distance between spacecraft is rather large, the proposed approach is able to provide an accurate solution even in such cases by employing the smoothed GPS pseudo-range measurements. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the errors of the proposed algorithm are reduced by more than about 12% compared to those of an algorithm using only laser measurements, as the accuracy of angular measurements is greater than $0.001^{\circ}$ at relative distances greater than 30 km.

  • The CPS provides data with long-term stability independent of passed time and the INS provides high-rate data with short-term stability. By integrating these complementary systems, a highly accurate navigation system can be achieved. In this paper, a loosely-coupled GPS/INS integration system is designed. It is a simple structure and is easy to implement and preserves independent navigation capability of GPS and INS. The integration system consists of a NCU, an IMU, a GPS receiver, and a monitoring system. The navigation algorithm in the NCU is designed under the multi-tasking environment based on a real-time kernel system and the monitoring system is designed using the Visual C++. The integrated Kalman filter is designed as a feedback formed 15-state filter, in which the states are position errors, velocity errors, attitude errors and sensor bias errors. The van test result shows that the integrated system provides more accurate navigation solution then the inertial or the GPS-alone navigation system.
