Dipole-dipole resistivity and ground penetrating radar(GPR) surveys were performed on an abandoned landfill site filled with asbestos containing material. The main purpose of the study was to estimate spatial extension and volume of the landfill for evaluting the cost for developing appropriate remedial alternatives. Assuming that the bedrock is within 10 m depth, dipole spacings of 2, 2.5 and 5m were set for six survey lines for resistivity measurements. For More detailed information, GPR suvey using 225 Mhz antenna was carried out for twelve survey lines for the shallower information. DC resistivity structures showed few tens ~ hundreds ohm-m for the landfill or alluvial laver, and 1,000~ 5,000 ohm-m for the bedrock. The depth to bedrock is found out to be approximately 5m. GPR survey results represented very clear reflection and/or diffraction events from the boundaries as well as from the blocky construction
wastes. With high-resolution GPR survey, depth of the bedrock was resolved up to 2m, which in turn, could be a good indicator for estimating the volume of the landfill. Those depths of bedrock were confirmed by backhoe excavation data for 13 sites. The total area and volume of the landfill were to be approximately 3,953 .$m^2$ and 4,033 $m^3$, respectively.
After choosing twenty sluice culverts located at national rivers by detailed appearance evaluation, hydraulic response test and acoustic televiewer in addition to surface geophysical explorations were carried out to investigate the cavities which exist at the boundary of sluice culvert and ground. Tapping, GPR, 3-D resistivity surveys and acoustic televiewer imagery obtained successful results in limited conditions according to characteristics of the sites. On the other hand, hydraulic response test successfully detected cavity existing at the lower part of sluice culvert and its continuity. However, hydraulic response test can not supply the quantitative informations on the scale and the shape of cavity. Thus it is very important for accurate investigation to make comprehensive interpretation after supplying various surveys proper to site characteristics.
This paper describes a three-dimensional ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey carried out around a levee of the Ara River in Saitama, Japan, where deformation of the ground was observed after heavy rainfall associated with the typhoon of September 2007. The high-density 3D GPR survey was conducted as a series of closely adjacent four directional sets of 2D surveys at an area surrounding vertical cracks on the paved road caused by deformations induced by heavy rain. The survey directions of the 2D surveys were 0, 90, 45, and -45 degrees with respect to the paved road and the intervals between lines were less than 0.5 m. The 3D subsurface structure was accurately imaged by the result of data processing using Kirchhoff-type 3D migration. As a result, locations and vertical continuities of the heavy rainfall induced cracks in the paved road were clearly imaged. This will be a great help in considering the generation mechanisms of the cracks. Moreover, the current risk of a secondary disaster was found to be low, as no air-filled cavities were detected by the 3D GPR survey.
Recently, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys have been actively carried out for precise subsurface void investigation because of the rapid increase of subsidence in urban areas. However, since the interpretation of GPR data was conducted based on the interpreter's subjective decision after applying only the basic data processing, it can result in reliability problems. In this research, to solve these problems, we analyzed the difference between the events generated from subsurface voids and those of strong diffraction sources such as the buried pipeline by applying the edge detection technique, which is one of image processing technologies. For the analysis, we applied the image processing technology to the GRP field data containing events generated from the cavity or buried pipeline. As a result, the main events by the subsurface void or diffraction source were effectively separated using the edge detection technique. In addition, since subsurface voids associated with the subsidence has a relatively wide scale, it is recorded as a gentle slope event unlike the event caused by the strong diffraction source recorded with a sharp slope. Therefore, the directional analysis of amplitude variation in the image enabled us to effectively separate the events by the subsurface void from those by the diffraction source. Interpretation based on these kinds of objective analysis can improve the reliability. Moreover, if suggested techniques are verified to various GPR field data sets, these approaches can contribute to semiautomatic interpretation of large amount of GPR data.

Pipelines are buried in urban area, and the position (depth and orientation) of buried pipeline should be clearly identified before ground excavation. Although various geophysical methods can be used to detect the buried pipeline, it is not easy to identify the exact information of pipeline due to heterogeneous ground condition. Among various non-destructive geo-exploration methods, ground penetration radar (GPR) can explore the ground subsurface rapidly with relatively low cost compared to other exploration methods. However, the exploration data obtained from GPR requires considerable experiences because interpretation is not intuitive. Recently, researches on automated detection technology for GPR data using deep learning have been conducted. However, the lack of GPR data which is essential for training makes it difficult to build up the reliable detection model. To overcome this problem, we conducted a preliminary study to improve the performance of the detection model using finite difference time domain (FDTD)-based numerical analysis. Firstly, numerical analysis was performed with homogeneous soil media having single permittivity. In case of heterogeneous ground, numerical analysis was performed considering the ground heterogeneity using fractal technique. Secondly, deep learning was carried out using convolutional neural network. Detection Model-A is trained with data set obtained from homogeneous ground. And, detection Model-B is trained with data set obtained from homogeneous ground and heterogeneous ground. As a result, it is found that the detection Model-B which is trained including heterogeneous ground shows better performance than detection Model-A. It indicates the ground heterogeneity should be considered to increase the performance of automated detection model for GPR exploration.
The name of (Ban)wolseong thanks to its having a shape like a half-moon. Wolseong fortress is one of 'Gyeongju Historic Area', world heritage. The Silla kingdom's royal palace previously maintained its capital fortress at the locale of Wolseong. However its real face has been kept in mystery. This study grafts Geophysics on modern Archaeology and approaches with scientific and systematic methods to an excavation plan or archaeological study by means of GPR exploration which can complement archaeological curiosity without destroying Wolseong fortress. The exploration area is $12,000m^2$ in front of Seokbinggo(stone storage for ice). It is only $10\%$ area of Wolseong fortress. As a conclusion, GPR detected 7 of squared buildings($8{\times}8m^2$ size), stone wall, an entrance for the fortress, lots of foundation stones, road(presumptive), and a presumptive pond which size is 35${\~}$40m in diameter.

Investigation of underwater sedimentary layers has been carried out with GPR(Ground Penetration Radar) survey. FPR survey has been proved to be very satisfactory since the target area has shallow water depth of about 2.5 m, is a lake with no water flow, and the thickness of mud layer, which is a main survey target, is relatively thin. The results clearly showed the underwater sedimentary layers, which includes mud, sand, gravel and basement layer. Specially, the distribution and total amount of mud layers from the survey results can be used as a basic data for the dredging of mud layer in the area.
Purpose: Ground subsidence due to cavity can bring about various problems, such as casualties, decrease of the safety of the structures, and indirect social costs. Therefore, ground subsidence should be prevented through the exploration and recovery of the cavity under the pavements. Method: In this study, GPR exploration method was carried out on both actual roadway and mock-up site to compensate for the problems caused by excavation and restoration process. Result: This study compared the cavity scales obtained from GPR exploration results and the direct excavation of the identified cavity. It was confirmed that the predicted soil depth by GPR exploration was similar to the identified soil depth, but the predicted cavity scale by GPR exploration overestimated the longitudinal and cross-sectional widths compared to the identified cavity scale. Conclusion: Based on the correlation between the predicted cavity scales by GPR exploration, it is possible to qualitatively estimate the cavity scales using the empirical formula proposed in this study.
A three-dimensional finite difference time-domain modeling algorithm based on staggered grid and considering transmitting and receiving antennas has been developed to simulate Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey. This algorithm adopted the subcellular method to simulate the dipole antennas being used in GPR system and added resistors to reduce ringing caused by the reflections at the ends of an antenna. Comparison of the output voltages in the presence of the resistors for half-space said that the ringing and the amplitude of output voltage decreased as the number of resistors increased, and the antenna was designed based upon this result. Radiation patterns were derived to understand the distribution of electric field energy in the planes including or normal to the antenna. The electric field energy concentrated on vertical direction in the plane including antenna more than in normal plane.
