Variations of mean ionospheric spatial gradient over Korea are analyzed in order to support GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) augmentation systems and integrity monitering systems. A software for analyzing the ionospheric spatial gradient is developed using an ionospheric plate model. Daily and annual variations of ionospheric delay and spatial gradient are analyzed using GPS data in 2003 and 2005 respectively. The ionospheric delays and spatial gradients in 2003 were larger than 2005. Also, the south-north gradient, about -1.0mm/km, is nearly two times larger than the east-west gradient. The annual ionospheric spatial gradients over Korea is varied within 2mm/km.
This study presents the generation and accuracy assessment of predicted orbital ephemeris based on satellite laser ranging (SLR) for geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) satellites. Two GEO satellites are considered: GEO-Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT)-2B (GK-2B) for simulational validation and Compass-G1 for real-world quality assessment. SLR-based orbit determination (OD) is proactively performed to generate orbital ephemeris. The length and the gap of the predicted orbital ephemeris were set by considering the consolidated prediction format (CPF). The resultant predicted ephemeris of GK-2B is directly compared with a pre-specified true orbit to show 17.461 m and 23.978 m, in 3D root-mean-square (RMS) position error and maximum position error for one day, respectively. The predicted ephemeris of Compass-G1 is overlapped with the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) final orbit from the GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ) analysis center (AC) to yield 36.760 m in 3D RMS position differences. It is also compared with the CPF orbit from the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) to present 109.888 m in 3D RMS position differences. These results imply that SLR-based orbital ephemeris can be an alternative candidate for improving the accuracy of commonly used radar-based orbital ephemeris for GEO satellites.

The national geodetic reference frame of Korea was adopted in 2003, which is referenced to ITRF (International Terrestrial Reference Frame) 2000 at the epoch of January 1, 2002. For precise positioning based on the satellites, it should be thoroughly maintained to the newest global reference frame. Other than plate tectonic motion, there are significant events or changes such as earthquakes, antenna replacement, PSD (Post-Seismic Deformation), seasonal variation etc. We processed three years of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) data(60 NGII CORS stations, 51 IGS core stations) to produce daily solutions minimally constrained to ITRF. From the time series of daily solutions, the sites with unexpected discontinuity were identified to set up an event(mostly antenna replacement). The combined solution with minimum constraints was estimated along with the velocity, the offsets, and the periodic signals. The residuals show that the surrounding environment also affects the time series to a certain degree, thus it should be improved eventually. The transformation parameters to ITRF2014 were calculated with stability and consistency, which means the national geodetic reference frame is properly aligned to the global reference frame.
In order to mitigate the vulnerability of the satellite navigation system against radio frequency interference, South Korea has been developing advanced terrestrial navigation system (eLoran) technology since 2016. The eLoran system synchronizes the transmission time of the pulse used in the existing Loran-C system with UTC and transmits correction information that can improve the position error. The eLoran system is known to reduce the position error of about 460 m of the existing Loran-C system to 20 m, and for this, the transmitter must be able to transmit eLoran signals according to more stringent standards. For this reason, an international standard that further developed the Loran-C signal standard established by US Coast Guard was established by Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International. In this paper, based on the analysis of the SAE9990 document, the international standard for eLoran transmission signals, a standard inspection process was produced to check whether the eLoran transmitter is transmitting signals in accordance with the standard.

Fields of high-precision positioning applications are growing fast across the mass market worldwide. Accordingly, the industry is focusing on developing methods of applying State-Space Representation (SSR) corrections on low-cost GNSS receivers. Among SSR correction types, this paper analyzes Safe Position Augmentation for Real Time Navigation (SPARTN) messages being offered by the SAfe and Precise CORrection DAta (SAPCORDA) company and validates positioning algorithms based on them. The first part of this paper introduces the SPARTN format in detail. Then, procedures on how to apply Basic-Precision Atmosphere Correction (BPAC) and High-Precision Atmosphere Correction (HPAC) messages are described. BPAC and HPAC messages are used for correcting satellite clock errors, satellite orbit errors, satellite signal biases and also ionospheric and tropospheric delays. Accuracies of positioning algorithms utilizing SPARTN messages were validated with two types of positioning strategies: Code-PPP using GPS pseudorange measurements and PPP-RTK including carrier phase measurements. In these performance checkups, only single-frequency measurements have been used and integer ambiguities were estimated as float numbers instead of fixed integers. The result shows that, with BPAC and HPAC corrections, the horizontal accuracy is 46% and 63% higher, respectively, compared to that obtained without application of SPARTN corrections. Also, the average horizontal and vertical RMSE values with HPAC are 17 cm and 27 cm, respectively.
The navigation message is composed of the information contained in the message and the structure for transmitting this information. In order to design a navigation message, considerations in terms of message content and message structure must be elicited. For designing a Korea Positioning System (KPS) navigation message, this paper explains performance indicators in terms of message structure and message content. Most of the performance analysis of GNSS navigation messages already in operation was performed only for Time-to-first-fix-Data (TTFFD). However, in the navigation message, the message content is composed of Clock-Ephemeris Data (CED) and additional information. So, this paper proposes a new performance indicator R_(Non-CED) that can be analyzed from the viewpoint of receiving additional information along with an explanation of TTFFD focusing on the CED reception time. This paper analyze the performance in terms of message structure using these two performance indicators. The message structures used for analysis are the packetized message protocol like GPS CNAV and the packetized and fixed pattern message protocol like GPS CNAV-2. From the results, it is possible to proffer how KPS navigation messages can have better performance than GPS navigation messages. And, these two performance indicators, TTFFD and RNon-CED, can help to design the minimum TTFF required performance of KPS navigation messages.

In order to propose new satellite navigation signals, it is essential to analyze the increased level of interference effect that the existing signals suffer. In this paper, a method for estimating the power density of the interference signals on GPS signals is proposed before and after the additional transmission of the KPS signals in the L1, L2 and L5 bands. For estimation, we assume the number of visible satellites observed over the Korean peninsular and the minimum received power of the satellite navigation signals. The comparison of the estimated values shows that the power density of the interfering signal increases by up to 1.37 dB due to the introduction of KPS, but this leads to an increase in interference plus noise power density below 0.47 dB.

The eLoran system is a high-power terrestrial navigation system that is recognized as the most appropriate alternative to complement the GNSS's vulnerability to radio frequency interference. Accordingly, Korea has conducted eLoran technology development projects since 2016. The eLoran system developed in Korea provides 20 m positioning accuracy to maritime user in Incheon and Pyeongtaek harbor. To accurately calculate the position with the eLoran signal, it is necessary to apply a compensation method that mitigates the propagation delay. In this paper, we develop the compensation method to mitigate the eLoran signal propagation delay and evaluate the positioning performance in Incheon harbor. The propagation delay due to the terrain characteristics is pre-surveyed and stored in the user receiver. Real-time fluctuations in propagation delay compared to the pre-stored data are mitigated by the temporal correction generated at a nearby differential Loran station. Finally, two performance evaluation tests were performed to verify the positioning accuracy of the Korean eLoran system. The first test took place in December 2020 and the second in April 2021. As a result, the Korean eLoran service has been confirmed to provide 20 m location accuracy without GPS.
Fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based parallel acquisition techniques with reduced computational complexity have been widely used for the acquisition of binary phase shift keying (BPSK) global positioning system (GPS) signals. In this paper, we propose a low computational FFT-based fine acquisition technique, for binary offset carrier (BOC) modulated BPSK signals, that depending on the subcarrier-to-code chip rate ratio (SCR) selectively utilizes the computationally efficient frequency-domain realization of the BPSK-like technique and two-dimensional compressed correlator (BOC-TDCC) technique in the first stage in order to achieve a fast coarse acquisition and accomplishes a fine acquisition in the second stage. It is analyzed and demonstrated that the proposed technique requires much smaller mean fine acquisition computation (MFAC) than the conventional FFT-based BOC acquisition techniques. The proposed technique is one of the first techniques that achieves a fast FFT-based fine acquisition of BOC signals with a slight loss of detection probability. Therefore, the proposed technique is beneficial for the receivers to make a quick position fix when there are plenty of strong (i.e., line-of-sight) GNSS satellites to be searched.
Equatorial Plasma Bubble (herafter, EPB) is a common feature in low-latitude F-region during the night time. Since EPB causes significant impacts on the satellite communication and navigation systems, its accurate forecast is highly demanded by the GNSS users. Thus, further understanding of these features and their configuration is a challenging issue in space weather studies. The day-to-day variability of the plasma bubble activity was investigated by analyzing the TIMED/GUVI, ROCSAT-1, DMSP, and CHAMP satellite data. The pre-reversal enhancement (PRE) is known as the most important single parameter for the onset of plasma bubbles but we do not know yet to what extent the day-to-day variability of the bubble activity can be attributed to the PRE. We obtained the magnitude of the PRE from ROCSAT-1 and the occurrence of bubbles in relation to the PRE was investigated by using the coincident observations of EPBs from TIMED/GUVI, DMSP, and CHAMP. By conducting one-to-one comparison of the PRE characteristics with the EPB occurrence we examined the role of the PRE in the onset of EPBs.
