  • Reasonably accurate estimation of the exposed population to the distinct levels of noise is essential to the efficient management of urban environmental noise. This study proposes a method of calculating the number of exposed people to industrial noise by using GIS tool and noise mapping. The exposed population of noise based on estimation of the number of people that lived in each building in urban area is compared with the one based on density of population. This study suggests the five step method that consists of gathering the fundamental data, extracting the property from the digital map, noise mapping based on the three dimensional topography, estimating population that lives in each building, merging the various results with GIS tool, and estimating exposed population to industrial noise through analyzing the noise map with GIS tools.

  • Directional felling is a felling method practised by the Forestry Department in Peninsular Malaysia as prescribed in Field Work Manual (1997) for Selective Management Systems (SMS) in forest harvesting. Determining the direction of tree felling in Peninsular Malaysia is conducted during the pre-felling inventory 1 to 2 years before the felling operation. This study aimed to predict and analyze the direction of tree felling using the vector-based path distance back link method in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and compare it with the felling direction observed on the ground. The study area is at Balah Forest Reserve, Kelantan, Peninsular Malaysia. A Path Distance Back Link (spatial analyst) function in ArcGIS Pro 3.0 was used in predicting tree felling direction. Meanwhile, a binary classification was used to compare the felling direction estimated using GIS and the tree felling direction observed on the ground. Results revealed that 61.3% of 31 trees predicted using the vector-based projection method were similar to the felling direction observed on the ground. It is important to note that dynamic changes of natural constraints might occur in the middle of tree felling operation, such as weather problems, wind speed, and unpredicted tree falling direction.

  • In this study, we performed a GIS-based debris flow simulation using the high-resolution airborne LiDAR DEM in order to establish the effective and resonable debris prevention plans in Korea. To do so, we set a study area to an specific region over Pyeochang-gun in Kangwon-do which showed the extreme rugged distribution of topography and simulated a possibility of debris flow occurrence in this area using a GIS-based numerical simulation program which was developed by applying the finite difference method. After that, we also performed the debris flow simulation by SINMAP and geomorphic analysis method in the same region and compared each result with that of GIS-based debris simulation for verifying the reliability.

  • In the Recent rapidly changing technology environment the computerization of administration business which is driven or will be driven to give improved information services to people by local government or central government with a huge budget. The possibility of applying GIS application component to the computerization of administration business is investigated to prevent local government from investing redundant money and to reuse the existing investment at this point of time. Land civil service application component was developed at the $\ulcorner Development of Open GIS Component S/W \lrcorner$ project which was managed by Ministry of Information and Communication . GIS application component was based on Open GIS OLE/COM specification for development of standard interface and USD(Unified System Development ) for development method and UML (Unified Modeling Language) for system design and Visual C++ for component implementation. Implemented components were Process Control, Map, Print, Statistics component and were verified by using Visual Basic and Delhi. tis study shows that the development of component is very useful at the GIS application development for local governments. But the standard of business and data and system is the essential prerequisite to maximize business application.

  • The 'Open Source' of programing is a method that is not only sharing the source, but also making the S/W by the low cost and easy way. In this study, we made the urban facilities management system(FMS) based on the GeoFOSS of Open Source. This system has the GIS function of the urban facilities management, the u-GIS function using the USN for processing the spatial information. Also, as we use the GeoFOSS of 'Open Source', we can have received many benefits. First, this system has the economic impact, because it is not necessary to buy the commercial GIS software. Second, this system can make most functions of the GIS, the performance does not bad compared to other products. Also, this system strictly conforms to the international standards, it is easy to get a repair, maintenance and interoperability.

  • Feature Simplification is an essential method for multiple representations of spatial features in GIS. However, spatial features re various, complex and a alrge size. Among spatial features which describe spatial information. linear feature is the msot common. Therefore, an efficient linear feature simplification method is most critical for spatial feature simplification in GIS. This paper propose an original method, by which the problem of linear feature simplification is mapped into the signal processing field. This method avoids conventional geometric computing in existing methods and exploits the advantageous properties of wavelet transform. Experimental results are presented to show that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods and achieves the time complexity of O(n), where n is the number of points of a linear feature. Furthermore, this method is not bound to two-dimension but can be extended to high-dimension space.

  • Due to a heavy rain resulted from the global environmental change, collapse accidents happen annually and it is a tendency to increase the loss of life and economy. Thus, measures for the collapse of slope are required. If the slope can be simulated before cutting, the collapse can be predicted, and also the accident of the collapse can be minimized at the cost of recovery. This paper presents a simulation method of a slope which is important in cutting. The method is modeling and designing using Petri-Net and is implemented in the Windows XP using Arc GIS. Therefore, by means of cutting and reclamation based on GIS, this paper can contribute to saving a lot of time and money.

  • Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) in Korea has developed as a tool for environmental conservation and decision making since Environmental Impact Statement(EIS) preparation in 1981. For effective implementation of it, we do system development and method enhancement continuously. The recently introduced GIS (Geographic Information System) can integrate geographic and attribute data, which will be applied to scoping, assessment, and alternative assessment, etc. in EIA. This study has three major components. First, it explains building of EIA factors of natural environment, living environment, and socio-economic environment of the study area defined in EIS preparation regulation. Second, the study presents applications of assessment method concerning suitability analysis of landfill site using GIS. Finally, it shows integration of GIS and odor impact assessment. Based on these analysis, the study makes some recommendations and conclusions.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the practical using of Geographic Information System(GIS) technology which are computer-based systems that are used to store and manipulate geographic information on the air pollution control and management in the macro city. For this study 130 samples were corrected by passive sampler in Seoul (25 distincts) distributed by TM-coordinate during November in 1997 to January 1998, and analysed by GC/MSD for 16 VOCs e.g., toluene, benzene and display using Arc/view GIS(version 3.2, ESRI Inc, U.S.A) for windows. The most VOCs concentration distribution in November, 1997 was higher than that of January, 1998 except benzene and 1,1,2-trichroloethan, bromobenzene. And products of the distribution of VOCs concentration display using GIS technology was effective as well as other display methods(e.g., contouring method, pie or column chart, graduated symbols), especially in mapping and symbolization capabilities for spatial pollutant status evaluation were very effective than other display methods.

  • In this study, GIS(Geographic Information System), a new approaching method, is proposed to effectively manage long-term settlements in the big reclamation sites. To verify an applicability of the proposed method, the prediction of long-term settlements which may occur in the overall soft deposits of the Incheon International Airport is carried out. During the process of the prediction of long-term settlements, measured settlement data obtained from an early stage of preloading are analyzed in detail. For purposes of the analysis, an estimation of the recompression index is also made based on the Nagaraj's research results. The coefficient of the secondary consolidation is further determined based on the relationship presented by the Mesri & Godlewski, which defines a ratio between the coefficient of the secondary consolidation and the recompression index.
