  • In this paper, we propose the application models and strategies of geospatial services registries for SOA in GIS web services. Recently. a number of SOA/web services are being developed for various commercial or public applications. However, geospatial SOA services are less used than general purpose SOA services, because GeoSpatial service registries has been neglected in many GIS applications even though GeoSpatial registries are essential component for open geospatial services. These problems are due to lack of researches for GIS registry usages. In this paper, we define the role player ill GIS SOAs, and develop the various GIS web service models among the players. Besides, we suggest the applications strategies of GeoSpatial services registries in the service models.

  • Researchers require repetitive works such as data format analysis, reformatting and map reprojection in order to use geospatial data. To solve above problems, they are building web-based simulation systems with web developers. But the web-based systems are not efficiently developed because there is not the appropriate simulation framework for a web-based system using geospatial data. In this study, the geospatial simulation framework that can be effectively applied to the web-based system was designed and proposed. Also, the framework was composed of 7 modules; web mapping service, GIS mapping, statistics, model, processing, graphics, and geospatial datasets. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the framework, a case study of urban growth has been verified. Experts who are not specialized in geospatial information disciplines expect to build easily a web-based system using geospatial data.

  • Using geospatial information in the early design phase is crucial because it requires considerable time, money, and effort. We use VWorld, part of the National Spatial Information Distribution system provided by the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, for providing geospatial information to building designers. We provide methods to adopt VWorld geospatial information to building design and develop plugins for a BIM authoring tool to transform and construct necessary BIM data in a user-friendly format. BIM users are benefitted from extra design information supplied from sibling disciplines such as urban design. GIS users are benefited by feedback building information continuously supplied from building projects based upon standard GIS coordinates. It is clear that an architectural designer with BIM tool can save time and efforts to obtain the geospatial information related a project using the developed system as result of this research.

  • This paper proposes a geospatial data visualization system supporting validation of GML documents. GIS systems manage and use both of spatial and non-spatial data. Currently, most GIS systems represent spatial data in GML (Geography Markup Language) developed by OGC. GML is a language for representation and sharing of spatial information, and until now many systems have been developed in GML. GML does not support expression of non-spatial data, i.e., relational information of spatial objects, and thus most systems extend GML to describe non-spatial information. However, it causes an issue that the systems only accepting standard GML documents cannot process the extended documents. In this paper, we propose a new GIS data visualization system to resolve the aforementioned Issue. Our proposed system allows the representation of both types of data supporting independency of spatial data and non-spatial data. It enhances interoperability with other relevant systems. Therefore, we can develop a rich and high Quality geospatial information services.

  • With regarding to web GIS, OGC promotes WFS allowing a client to retrieve geospatial data encoded in GML which is a modeling language to encode the semantics, syntax and schema of geospatial information resources. Even though GML provides benefits for geographic description, it is too heavy to be processed by mobile devices. In order to address the issue, this paper evaluates GML service with WFS server and GML viewers. Through this paper, we get analyses of properties of GML geospatial data and the effects on wireless devices, which are expected to be fundamental materials onto a design of mobile applications.

  • This paper aims to analyze academic and technological progresses of GIS as reviewing research trends of GIS journals for which four major GIS journals, KAGIS(The Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies), KSISS(Korea Spatial Information System Society), KOGSIS(The Korean Society for Geospatial Information System), GISAK(Geographic Information System Association of Korea) have been selected. As the authors suppose that subjects of academic articles reflect academic and social demands, total 1,222 articles that have been published by the four journals from 1993 to 2006 were reviewed and analyzed by content analysis method. Because of large volumes and variety of research scopes, all topics in the papers were classified into several categories with title and keywords referenced in each paper and the categories were analyzed into 5 years period. Thus, from the analysis results, this paper asserts that research trends and academic progresses are well-structured to review recent GIS areas in Korea and the outcomes of the analysis can be an adequate guidelines to establish NGIS policies and strategies.

  • Traffic emissions are the main cause of environmental pollution in cities and respiratory problems amongst people. This study developed a model based on an integration of support vector regression (SVR) algorithm and geographic information system (GIS) to map traffic carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations and produce prediction maps from micro level to macro level at a particular time gap in a day in a very densely populated area (Utara-Selatan Expressway-NKVE, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). The proposed model comprised two models: the first model was implemented to estimate traffic CO concentrations using the SVR model, and the second model was applied to create prediction maps at different times a day using the GIS approach. The parameters for analysis were collected from field survey and remote sensing data sources such as very-high-resolution aerial photos and light detection and ranging point clouds. The correlation coefficient was 0.97, the mean absolute error was 1.401 ppm and the root mean square error was 2.45 ppm. The proposed models can be effectively implemented as decision-making tools to find a suitable solution for mitigating traffic jams near tollgates, highways and road networks.

  • Recently, convergence phenomena among industries are appeared with the rapid development of information and communication technology and technology convergence also is emerging as a key issue. Especially, geospatial information industry may be expected to conduct a role as a pioneer in this convergence era. In order to do this, all fields of geospatial information should be classified systematically and interoperability and compatibility among geospatial information systems should be acquired. In this paper, a technical reference model of intelligent geospatial information is proposed to show a hierarchical technical system in the field of geospatial information. The model is developed with five core research projects of Korean Land Spatialization Group (KLSG) and includes also the scope and importance of core technology in the system. The model would be helpful to manage and control all projects of KLSG.

  • By 'National GIS Plan', various strategies and programs have been carried out for the professional training in the fields of geospatial information. The e-learning can make it possible to develop and manage the adaptable curriculums, to maximize the effect of the practical exercises, and to establish the cooperative systems with the industries. In this study, curriculums of the geospatial fields were developed and suggested for the cyber universities. These curriculums were divided into three stages, fundamentals, applications, and advances, and into three tracks, system development and construction, mapping and geospatial data construction, and practice and application, based on the current demands in geospatial industries. Owing to be the modularized structure, proposed curriculums would be easily adapted and updated to the change of the new demands.
