  • This paper explores two such indexes----the Aerosol Free Vegetation Index (AFRI) and the Atmospherically Resistant Vegetation Index (ARVI). Comparisons were made with the NDVI (normalized vegetation index) to see if they indeed performed better. In general, the results showed that the AFRI and ARVI (with gamma=1) did indeed perform better than their NDVI counterpart study with the related channels were employed.

  • A bactriocin produced by Lactrococcus sp. HY449 was purified by sequential purfication steps such as n-propanol-acetone precipitation ion -exchange chromatography using CM-Sequential CL6B. gel filtration chromatography using Sephacry HR100 and reverse-phase chromatography using pro RPC HR 5/10. Reverse-phase chromatography the final step of the purfication yielded a single symmetrical peak of bacteriocin activity The purification resulted in final yield of 3.25% and 413.35 fold increase of the specific activity of bacteriocin. The active fraction from reverse-phase chromatography was used for N-terminal amino acid analysis . The purified bacteriocin contained isoleucine, leucine, methionine, and glycine at but N-terminal end no aromatic amino acids. Calculation of the number of amino acid residues in the bacteriocin revealed that it is consisted of 32 residues assuming the molecular weight of bacteriocin to be about 3.6kDa. Edman degrandation elucidated amino acid residues of the first four of the N-terminus to be $NH_2$-Ile-Leu-Pro-GIn.

  • Background and purpose: Giu Ga Chu Yo(診家樞要) was written in the year 1359 by Hwal Su(滑壽) who was a famous oriental doctor between Won(元) and Myeong(明) dynasty. As specialized in sphygmology (脈學), this book was brought together most things about sphygmology(脈擧) before Won(元) dynasty by e author. Moreover he added the self-realized things to this book. Methods: In this book, besides a author's preface, there are all 20 chapters which are Chu Yo Hyeon Eon(權要玄言), Jwa U Su Bae Jang Bu Bu Wi(左右手配臟腑部位), O Jang(五臟), Sa Si Peong Maek(四時平脈), Nae Gyeong Sam Bu Maek Beop(內經三部脈法), Ho Heup Chim Bu Jeong O Jang Beop(呼吸沈浮定五臟法), In Ji Ha Gyeong Jung I Jeing O Jang Beop(因指下重以定五腑法), Sam Bu So Ju(三部所主), Ji Maek Su Beop(持脈手法), Maek Gwi Yu Sin(脈貴有神), Maek Eum Yang Yu Seong(脈陰陽類成), Gyeom Hyeon Maek Ryu(兼見脈類), Je Maek Ui Gi Ryu(諾脈宜忌類), Heom Je Sa Jeung Ryu(驗諸死症類), Sa Jeol Maek Ryu(死絶脈類), O Jang Dong Ji Maek(五藏動止脈), Bu In Maek Beop(婦人脈法), So A Mrek Beop(小兒脈法), Maek Sang Tong Hoe(脈象統會), Maek Sang Ga(脈象歌) and an epilogue in the end. Result and Conclusion: Looking into this book, we can know that it is very detail in analyzing item by item, bright and simple in explaining and it is very useful in studying pulse evaluation(脈診). In his preface, Hwal Su(辨壽) expresses his opinion with firm confidence that 'Do(道) of the World scattered in several scholarships and books of method and technique(術). Nothing of method and technique(力術) is more important than medicine. Nothing of medicine goes before pulse evaluation(脈診).' With such good reasons, as a student of sphygmology(脈學), I think this book is very valuable in studying pulse evaluation.' So I add Hangul suffixes(吐) to a part of this book and translate it into Korean.

  • Background: The geriatric population in Malaysia is predicted to increase from 4% of the total population in 1998 to 9.8% by 2020, in parallel with developments in the socioeconomy. Cancer is expected to be a major medical issue among this population. However, the decision for treatment in Malaysia is always decided by the caregivers instead of the elderly patients themselves. Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the willingness to accept chemotherapy among elderly Malaysians. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, patients aged 60 and above from various clinics/wards were recruited. Those giving consent were interviewed using a questionnaire. Results: A total of 75 patients were recruited, 35 patients (47%) with a history of cancer. The median age was 73 years old. There were 29 Chinese (38.7%), 22 Indian (29.3%), 20 Malay (26.7%) and four other ethnicity patients. Some 83% and 73% of patients willing to accept strong and mild chemotherapy, respectively. Patients with cancer were more willing to accept strong and mild chemotherapy compared to the non-cancer group (88.6% vs 62.5%, P=0.005, 94% vs 80%, P=0.068). On sub-analysis, 71.4% and 42.9% of Chinese patients without a history of cancer were not willing to receive strong and mild chemotherapy, respectively. Conclusions: The majority of elderly patients in UMMC were willing to receive chemotherapy if they had cancer. Experience with previous treatment had positive influence on the willingness to undergo chemotherapy.

  • Background: The current standard treatment for patients with newly diagnosed diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is rituximab combined with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisolone (CHOP). A significant number of patients were not treated with recommended dose of rituximab due to limited financial resources in Malaysia. This study evaluates the efficacy of R-CHOP like chemotherapy in Malaysian patients with DLBCL. Materials and Methods: The study comprised a retrospective analysis of patients with DLBCL treated at a single centre. The outcome was compared with patients who were treated with R-CHOP like and CHOP like chemotherapy. Patients who were treated with lower dose of rituximab was subanalysed for outcome. Results: A total of 86 patients who had CHOP-like chemotherapy were included. Only 39 (45%) patients had rituximab and only 12 (29%) patients had the recommended dose. The overall response (OR) and complete response (CR) rates were 88% and 81% respectively. There was no significant difference in OR and CR in patients who had rituximab and those without rituxmab. Those with International Prognostic Index (IPI) score of ${\leq}2$ had significant higher CR rate, progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (p<0.001). Conclusions: The lack of significant improvement in CR and DFS in our patients may be due to an inadequate dose of rituximab.

  • The objective was to assess the concentrations of Vitamins A and E in blood of growing lambs infected or not with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) and fed a diet containing clinoptilolite. Twenty-four male lambs were used. A $2{\times}2$ factorial design consisting of two feeding treatments (B and Z) and two levels of parasitic status, infected (I) and uninfected (U) was used. Lambs were randomly assigned to one of four (n = 6), groups: BU (basal-uninfected), BI (basal-infected), ZU (zeolite-uninfected) and ZI (zeoliteinfected). Lambs of groups BI and ZI were infected with a single dose of 15,000 $L_3$ larvae of GIN. Blood samples were collected from individual animals at the start of the experiment and, thereafter, at 15-day intervals. The average blood serum vitamin A and vitamin E, concentration in lambs (mean${\pm}$SD) was 0.25${\pm}$0.090 ${\mu}g/ml$ and 1.59${\pm}$0.769 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Lambs fed Z diet had higher values of vitamin A (p<0.001), but lower values of vitamin E (p<0.01) when compared with those fed B diet.

  • Background and Objectives: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a disorder that usually occurs in the elderly, leading to dementia in some progressive cases. The purpose of this study is to examine the utility of central auditory processing tests as early diagnostic tools for identifying the elderly with MCI. Subjects and Methods: This study was conducted on 20 elderly patients with MCI and 20 healthy matched peers. The speech perception ability in a quiet environment and in the presence of background noise and also temporal resolution were assessed by using Speech Perception in Noise (SPIN) and Gap in Noise (GIN) tests, respectively. Results: The results indicated that the ability to understand speech in a quiet environment did not differ significantly between the two groups. However, SPIN at the three signal-to-noise ratios and the temporal resolution scores were significantly different between the two groups (p<0.001). Conclusions: Individuals with MCI appear to have poorer speech comprehension in noise and a lower temporal resolution than those of the same age, but without cognitive defects. Considering the utility of these tests in identifying cognitive problems, we propose that since the GIN test seems to be less influenced by intervening factors, this test can therefore, be a useful tool for the early screening of elderly people with cognitive problems.
