  • The objectives of this paper are to study the effects of thermal and geometric conditions on the performance of indoor heat exchanger with R410A for Gas Engine Driven Heat Pump (GHP) application and to find optimum design conditions of indoor heat exchanger by parametric analysis for the key parameters. In the air side, moisture out of the humid air condenses on the fin surface while the refrigerant (R410A) boils inside the smooth tube. Therefore this study uses Log Mean Enthalpy Difference (LMHD) method to analyze the heat transfer from the humid air to the refrigerant of R410A. The results show that fin pitch and longitudinal pitch have significant effect on the heat exchanger preformance. This study will provide the guideline for optimum design of indoor heat exchanger with R410A for GHP application.

  • A gas driven heat pump (GHP) core design comprises internal combustion engine, compressors incorporated to a cooling/heating system, rubber mountings and belt transmissions. Main excitation farces are generated by an engine, compressors themselves and belt fluctuation. It leads to high vibration level of the mount that can cause damage of GHP elements. Therefore an appropriate design of the mounting system is crucial in terms of reliability and vibration reduction. In this paper oscillation of the engine mount is explored both experimentally and analytically. Experimental analysis of natural frequencies and operational frequency response of the GHP engine mounting system enables to create simplified model for numerical and analytical investigations. It is worked out criteria f3r vibration abatement of the isolated structure. Influence of bracket stiffness between engine and compressors, suspension locations and damper performance is investigated. Ways to reduce excitation forces and improve dynamic performance of the engine-compressor mounting system are considered from these analyses. Implementation of the proposed approach permits to choose appropriate rubber mountings and their location as well as joining elements design A phase matching technique can be employed to control forces from main exciters. It enables to changing vibration response of the structure by control of natural modes contribution. Proposed changes lead to significant vibration reduction and can be easily utilized in engineering practice.

  • Fault detection has to be proceeded by steady state filtering to get rid of transient effect associated with thermal capacity. Coefficient of variance (COV), ratio of standard deviation devided by moving average, was employed as steady-state filter. Engine speed and refrigerant pressures were selected as parameters representing system dynamics. The filtered values were registered as members of steady-state DB. They were found to show good functional relationship with ambient temperature. The relationship was fitted with a second order polynomial and the distribution bounds of the data around the fitted curve were expressed by visual inspection because of varying average and random data interval. Fault data were compared with the steady-state data obtained during normal operation. The fault data were easily isolated from the fault-free one. To make such isolation reliable, tests to construct good DB should be designed in a systematic way.

  • Geothermal heat pump(GHP) systems have been shown to be an environmentally-friendly, efficient alternative to traditional cooling and heating systems in both residential and commercial applications. Although some experimental work related to performance evaluation of GHP systems with vertical borehole ground heat exchangers for commercial buildings has been done, relatively little has been reported on the performance simulation of these systems. The aim of this study is to evaluate the cooling and heating performance of the GHP system with 30 borehole ground heat exchangers applied to an commercial building($1,210m^2$) in Seoul. For this purpose, a typical design procedure was involved with a combination of design parameters such as building loads, heat pump capacity, circulating pump, borehole diameter, and ground effective thermal properties, etc. The cooling and heating performance prediction of the system was conducted with different prediction methods and then each result is compared.

  • The demands are increasing for the efficient heating and cooling system and thermal comfort environment because of changes in climate and environment, and deterioration of buildings and facilities can cause education budget to increase. So the study to apply heating and cooling system to university is urgently needed to improve an optimum energy saving system, educational environment and convenience of maintenance. For this reason, we selected a university campus in Seoul then came to understand the current situation and found some problems. We drew alternatives from comparative analysis of them. It selects representative building and carries out economic analysis to evaluate characteristics of energy consumption and economics on each type of heating and cooling system. As a result we drew the optimum system from those processes as previously stated. We studied 3 available systems, absorption chiller, EHP(Electric Heat Pump) and GHP(Gas Engine Heat Pump). According to LCC analysis suppose that the value of EHP is 1, it came out that the value of absorption chiller is 1.5 and the value of GHP is 2.2. This study, suggesting the optimum heating and cooling system, will support educational and research activities furthermore effect to maximize energy efficiency. Ultimately it is expected that it will contribute to make eco-friendly Green Campus.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the GHP system with 150 energy piles for a commercial building. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of a sustainable performance of the system, simulations were conducted over 1-year and 20-year periods, respectively. The 1-year simulation results showed that the maximum and minimum temperatures of brine returning from the energy piles were $23.80^{\circ}C$ and $7.90^{\circ}C$, which were in a range of design target temperatures. In addition, after 20 years' operation, these returning temperatures decreased slowly to $23.05^{\circ}C$ and $6.98^{\circ}C$, and finally reached to stable state. The results also showed that the energy piles injected heat of 65.6 MWh to the ground and extracted heat of 96.0 MWh from the ground, respectively. Also, it is expected this GHP system with energy piles can operate with average SPF of more than 4.15 for long term.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the GHP system with 45 cast-in-place energy piles(CEP) for a commercial building. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of a sustainable performance of the system, transient simulations were conducted over 1-year and 20-year periods, respectively. The 1-year simulation results showed that the maximum and minimum temperatures of brine returning from the CEPs were $23.91^{\circ}C$ and $6.66^{\circ}C$, which were in a range of design target temperatures. In addition, after 20 years' operation, these returning temperatures decreased to $21.24^{\circ}C$ and $3.68^{\circ}C$, and finally reached to stable state. Annual average extraction heat of cast-in-place energy piles was 94.3 MWh and injection heat was 65.7 MWh from the 20 years of simulation results. Finally, it is expected this GHP system can operate with average heating SPF of more than 3.45 for long-term.

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the effects of thermal and geometric conditions on the performance of indoor heat exchangers with R-410A for Gas Engine Driven Heat Pump (GHP) application and to find the optimum design conditions of indoor heat exchangers by parametric analysis for the key parameters. The key parameters are number of tube row, number of tube pipe, fin pitch and transverse tube pitch. In the air side, moisture out of the humid air condenses on the fin surface while the refrigerant (R-410A) boils inside the smooth tube. Therefore this study uses Log Mean Enthalpy Difference (LMHD) method to analyze the heat transfer from the humid air to the refrigerant. This study determines the heat exchanger size, air side/refrigerant side pressure drop and overall heat transfer coefficient. Optimum design conditions for the key parameters are also determined by the parametric analysis. The results show that number of rows and pipes, fin pitch have significant effect on the heat exchanger size. It is also found that the tube length of the louver fin is $17{\sim}30%$ shorter than that of the plate fin.
