  • This paper discusses frequency analysis based on frequency spectrum in orthogonal cutting of fiber-matrix composite materials. A glass reinforced polyester (GFRP) was used as workpiece. Analysis method employs a force sensor and the signals from the sensor are processed using a fast Fourier transform (FFT) technique. The experimental correlation between the different chip formation mechanisms and model coefficients are then established. (omitted)

  • Three series of 36 short square columns confined by wraps, full shells and partial shells were tested by varying the thickness of GFRP laminates. An assessment of the effectiveness of the existing model on confinement of concrete columns with FRP was made. Test results indicated moderate increases in strength, but significantly enhanced deformability compared with those in unconfined concrete, particularly the warp and full shell confinement.

  • This paper aims to reduce weight by replacing the reinforcements of the B-pillar used in vehicles with CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) and GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics) from the existing steel materials. For this, it is necessary to secure structural stability that can replace the existing B-pillar while reducing the weight. Existing B-pillar are composed of steel reinforcements of various shapes, including a steel outer. Among these steel reinforcements, two steel reinforcements are to be replaced with composite materials. Each steel reinforcement is manufactured separately and bonded to the B-pillar outer by welding. However, the composite reinforcements presented in this paper are manufactured at once through compression and injection processes using patch-type CFRP and rib-structured GFRP. CFRP is attached to the high-strength part of the B-pillar to resist side loads, and the GFRP ribs are designed to resist torsion and side loads through a topology optimization technique. Through structural analysis, the designed composite B-pillar was compared with the existing B-pillar, and the weight reduction ratio was calculated.

  • Currently, the problem of pollution of the marine environment by microplastics is emerging seriously internationally. In this study, to develop a lightweight portable microplastic collection device, the types and number of microplastics in 21 coastal areas nationwide in Korea were investigated. And CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic), GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic), ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene copolymer) and aluminum were applied for design and analysis of microplastic collection device to have the durability, corrosion resistance and lightweight. As a result of sample collection and classification from the shore, it was confirmed that microplastics were distributed the most in Hamdeok beach, and the polystyrene was found to be mainly distributed microplastics. Particle information through coastal field survey and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis were used to analyze the flow rate and distribution of particles such as sand and impurities, which were applied to the structural analysis of the cyclone device using the finite element method. As a result of structural analysis considering the particle impact inside the cyclone device, the structural safety was examined as remarkable in the order of CFRP, GFRP, aluminum, and ABS. In the view of weight reduction, CFRP could be reduced in weight by 53%, GFRP by 47%, and ABS by 61% compared to aluminum for the cyclone device.

  • Finite element method (FEM) is utilized in the development of products to realistically analyze and predict the mechanical behavior of materials in various fields. However, the approach based on the numerical analysis of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites, for which the fiber orientation and strain rate affect the mechanical properties, has proven to be challenging. The purpose of this study is to define and evaluate the mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced plastic composites using the numerical analysis models of Digimat, a linear, nonlinear multi-scale modeling program for various composite materials such as polymers, rubber, metal, etc. In addition, the aim is to predict the behavior of realistic polymeric composites. In this regard, the tensile properties according to the fiber orientation and strain rate of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) with short fiber weight fractions of 30wt% among various polymers were investigated using references. Information on the fiber orientation was calculated based on injection analysis using Moldflow software, and was utilized in the finite element model for tensile specimens via a mapping process. LS-Dyna, an explicit commercial finite element code, was used for coupled analysis using Digimat to study the tensile properties of composites according to the fiber orientation and strain rate of glass fibers. In addition, the drawbacks and advantages of LS-DYNA's various anisotropic material models were compared and evaluated for the analysis of glass fiber reinforced plastic composites.

  • FRP composites which are used in strengthening existing structure are usually adhered to the concrete surface, their performance are directly affected by environmental condition such as freezing-thawing and moisture. Accordingly, it is required to evaluate bond durability between FRP composite and concrete as well as FRP materials itself. The durability characteristics of FRP composite for freezing-thawing are evaluated in this study with the variables of concrete strength, type of FRP composite, freezing-thawing conditions and freezing-thawing cycle. In addition, material durability of GFRP sheet for high temperature/high humidity condition are examined in this experimental study.

  • Recently, (terahertz ray) applications have emerged as one of the most promising new powerful nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques. In this study, a new T-ray time-domain spectroscopy system was utilized for detecting and evaluating layup effect and flaw in FRP composite laminates. Extensive experimental measurements in reflection and thru-transmission modes were made to map out the T-ray images. Especially this was demonstrated in thick GFRP laminates containing double saw slots. In carbon composites the penetration of terahertz waves is limited to some degree and the detection of flaws is strongly affected by the angle between the electric field(E-field) vector of the terahertz waves and the intervening fiber directions. The artificial defects investigated by terahertz waves were bonded foreign material, simulated disbond and delamination and mechanical impact damage. The effectiveness and limitations of terahertz radiation for the NDE of composites are discussed.

  • In this paper, the microwave absorbing characteristics after the impact of the radar-absorbing structure (RAS) consisting of periodic pattern sheet (PPS) and glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) were experimentally investigated. The fabricated RAS effectively absorbed the microwave in the X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz). In order to induce the damage to the RAS, a low-velocity impact test with various impact energy of 15, 40, and 60 J was conducted. Afterward, the impact damage was observed by using visual inspection, non-destructive test, and image processing method. Moreover, the absorbing performance of intact and damaged RAS was measured by the free-space measurement system. The experiment results revealed that the delamination damage from the impact energy of 15 J did not considerably affect the microwave absorbing performance of the RAS. However, fiber breakage and penetration damage with a relatively large damaged area were occuured when the impact energy was increased up to 40 J and 60 J, and these failures significantly degraded the microwave absorbing characteristics of the RAS.

  • Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composites have drawn increasing attentions worldwide for decades due to its outstanding properties. Stress concentration factor (SCF) as an essential parameter in materials science are critically considered in structure design and application, strength assessment and failure prediction. However, investigation of stress concentration in FRP composites has been rarely reported so far. In this study, three resource-conserving analyses (Isotropic analysis, Orthotropic analysis and Finite element analysis) were introduced to plot the $K_T^A-d/W$ curve for E-glass/epoxy composite plate with the geometrical defect of circular hole placed centrally. The plates were loaded to uniaxial direction for simplification. Finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out via ACP (ANSYS composite prepost module). Based on the least squares method, a simple expression of fitting equation could be given based on the simulated results of a set of discrete points. Finally, all three achievable solutions were presented graphically for explicit comparison. In addition, the investigation into customized efficient SCFs has also been carried out for further reference.
