In order to promote the efficient use of composite materials, effort is currently being directed at the development of design criteria for composite structures. Insofar as design against buckling is concerned, it is well known that, for metal shells, a key step is the definition of 'knockdown' factors on the elastic critical buckling stress accounting mainly for the influence of initial geometric imperfections. At present, the imperfection sensitivity of composite shells has not been explored in detail. Due to the large number of parameters influencing buckling response (considerably larger than for isotropic shells), a very large number of tests would be needed to quantify imperfection sensitivity experimentally. An alternative approach is to use validated numerical models for this task. Thus, the objective of this paper is to outline the underlying theory used in developing a composite shell element and to present results from a validation exercise and subsequently from a parametric study on axially loaded glass fibre-reinforced plastic (GFRP) curved panels using finite element modelling. Both eigenvalue and incremental analyses are performed, the latter including the effect of initial geometric imperfection shape and amplitude, and the results are used to estimate 'knockdown' factors for such panels.

Recently many researches were conducted on the interlaminar fracture that is a delamination between laminates by using ASTM standardized methods. However the experiment of the intralaminar a fracture is difficulty. In this study, four types of CFRP/GFRP composites with different layer structures were compared to evaluate an intralaminar fracture toughness under the mode I. Also the CNTs were added to the layer for the examination of the fracture toughness improvement. And the characteristics of the crack propagation behaviour was observed using a microscope. The obtained results can be useful for the evaluation of the intralaminar fracture toughness of the CNT reinforced CFRP/GFRP composites.

Composite materials are widely used to make all kinds of machine parts, internal and structural materials of cars, aerospace components, building structures, ship materials, sporting goods and others, It is worth while to use composite space substitute material in various applications when compared with others. But the use of composite material is limited in the field of the mechanical processing because of the difficulties in processing. Thus, it is proved that the surface is rough at the in and out sections of the hole processing when the GFRP is machined with HSS drill in the vertical machining center. And it is observed that the more it is processed, the more the fluid type long chip is changed into the powdered chip.
In this paper, we analyzed the laminated composite sandwich plate structure of honeycomb core with changing values of the designing parameters. As a result, in designing parameters of that, the more height and thickness of the laminated composite plate's core, the more increase of natural frequency. The laminated angle has the maximum value when the plate of honeycomb core is join to opposite direction. This paper shows that the natural frequency of CFRP is higher than that of GFRP, and also impact strength marks maximum value in case of antisymmetry than symmetry of core. Also it shows that the mode shapes are various along with the angle-ply of laminated composite plate.

In this study, static axial crush tests were performed with the new aluminum/GFRP hybrid tube. Glass/Epoxy prepregs were wrapped around an aluminum tube and co-cured. The failure of the hybrid tube was stable and progressive without trigger mechanism, and specific energy absorption was increased to the maximum of 33% in comparison with the aluminum tube. Effective energy absorption is possible for an inner aluminum tube because a wrapped composite tube constrains the deflection of an aluminum tube. The failure of a hybrid composite tube was stable without trigger mechanism because the inner aluminum tube could play the role of the crack initiator and controller. Mean crushing load could be calculated by modifying the plastic hinge collapse model for hybrid materials. The predicted results by this analytical model showed good agreement with the experimental results. It can be said that Aluminum/Glass-Epoxy hybrid tube is suitable for the vehicle front structure because this hybrid tube shows effective energy absorption, easy production, and simple application capability for RTM process.
This paper presents experimental results of advanced investigation carried out on the beams reinforced with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) rebar and stirrups. Twelve beams reinforced with GFRP and one beam with steel reinforcement of size $230{\times}300{\times}2000mm$ were investigated. Longitudinal reinforcement, shear span and spacing of stirrups were the main variables to form the set. In advanced testing three types of strain gauges for steel, composite and concrete surface were applied to observe strain/stress development against the applied load. Live data were recorded from four strain gauges applied on stirrups, one at center on longitudinal reinforcement, two on the concrete surface and central deflection during the test. Although the focus of the paper was mainly on the behavior of GFRP shear reinforcement, other parallel data were observed for the completeness of the test. Design recommendations of ISIS Canada Design Manual (2007), Japan Society of Civil Engineers (1997) and American Concrete Institute (ACI-440.1R-06) were reviewed. Shear design predictions were compared with experimental results in which it was observed that all the three standards provided conservative predictions. However, ACI found most efficient compare to other two there is room to improve the efficiency of the recommendations.
This study reports the results of a series of tests of pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (P-GFRP) box section composite profile columns, geometrically similar with/without concrete core, containing 0-1-2-3% steel fiber, with different lengths. The recycled steel wires were obtained from waste tyres. The effects of steel fiber ratio on the collapse and size effect of concrete filled P-GFRP columns under axial pressure were investigated experimentally and analytically. A total of 36 columns were tested under compression. The presence of pultruded profile and steel wire ratio were selected as the primary variable. The capacity of pultruded profiles with infilled concrete are averagely 9.3 times higher than the capacity of concrete without pultruded profile. The capacity of pultruded profiles with infilled concrete are averagely 34% higher than that of the pultruded profiles without infilled concrete. The effects of steel wire ratio are more pronounced in slender columns which exhibit buckling behavior. Moreover, the proposed analytical approach to calculate the capacity of P-GFRP columns successfully predicted the experimental findings in terms of both pure axial and buckling capacity.
Flange and web local buckling in beam plastic hinge regions of steel moment frames can prevent beam-column connections from achieving adequate plastic rotations under earthquake-induced forces. This threat is especially valid for existing steel moment frame buildings with beams that lack adequate flange/web slenderness ratios. As the use of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) have increased in strengthening and repair of steel members in recent years, using FRPs in stabilizing local instabilities have also attracted attention. Previous computational studies have shown that longitudinally oriented glass FRP (GFRP) strips may serve to moderately brace beam flanges against the occurrence of local buckling during plastic hinging. An experimental study was conducted at Izmir Institute of Technology investigating the effects of GFRP reinforcement on local buckling behavior of existing steel I-beams with flange slenderness ratios (FSR) exceeding the slenderness limits set forth in current seismic design specifications and modified by a bottom flange triangular welded haunch. Four European HE400AA steel beams with a depth/width ratio of 1.26 and FSR of 11.4 were cyclically loaded up to 4% rotation in a cantilever beam test set-up. Both bare beams and beams with GFRP sheets were tested in order to investigate the contribution of GFRP sheets in mitigating local flange buckling. Different configurations of GFRP sheets were considered. The tests have shown that GFRP reinforcement can moderately mitigate inelastic flange local buckling.
This paper aims to examine the behavior of slender reinforced concrete columns confined with external glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRP) sheets under eccentric loads. The experimental work conducted in this paper is an extension to previous work by the author concerning the behavior of eccentrically loaded short columns strengthened with GFRP wrapping. In this study, nine reinforced concrete columns divided into three groups were casted and tested. Three eccentricity ratios corresponding to e/t = 0, 0.10, and 0.50 in one direction of the column were tested in each group. The first group was the control one without confinement with slenderness ratio equal 20. The second group was the same as the first group but fully wrapped with one layer of GFRP laminates. The third group was also fully wrapped with one layer of GFRP laminates but having slenderness ratio equal 15. The experimental results of another two groups from the previous work were used in this study to investigate the difference between short and slender columns. The first was control one with slenderness ratio equal 10 and the second was fully wrapped and having the same slenderness ratio. All specimens were loaded until failure. The ultimate load, axial deformation, strain in steel bars, and failure mechanisms of each specimen were generated and analyzed. The results show that GFRP laminates confining system is less effective with slender columns compared with short one, but this solution is still applied and it can be efficiently utilized especially for slender columns with low eccentric ratio.

Due to lightweight and high durability of glass-fiber reinforced polyester (GFRP) materials, they are promising alternatives to conventional construction materials such as steel, concrete and wood. As good application examples of GFRP materials, several types of temporary arch bridges were suggested and verified by finite element analyses in our previous study where snap-fit GFRP decks were applied. In this paper, we conduct a structural performance test to verify safety and serviceability of the temporary arch bridge, where snap-fit GFRP decks are assembled by bolts. The structural problems occurred in this test are also discussed and improvement of temporary arch bridges is suggested to resolve the occurred structural problems.
