  • Nine brand populations of Hanwoo cattle were characterized using 11 microsatellite DNA markers. The studied populations were: Ansung, Yangpyang, DaeGwanryeng, Palkongsangkangwoo, Hoengseong, Jangsu, Sumjinkang, Hadong, Nam-hae. The observed heterozygosity, expected heterozygosity, and polymorphism information content were calculated. Allele frequencies were calculated and used for the characterization of each brand population and to study their genetic relationships. Genetic distances were estimated using Nei's DA genetic distance and the resultant DA matrix was used in the construction of phylogenetic trees. The NJ tree showed that Ansung and Yangpyang, Sumjinkang and Jangsu, Namhae and Ha-Dong are closely related and are considered to have undergone genetic exchange within the same locale. This study will contribute to the local Hanwoo brand industry.

  • In this study, we investigated the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationship of six duck populations by employing the genetic polymorphisms of 20 microsatellites. The parameters used in this study included number of alleles, average effective numbers of alleles (E) and average rates of heterozygosity of each population. The results showed that all the microsatellite loci were highly polymorphic except that the locus AJ515896 in Muscovy duck was 0. The average PIC (0.762), average h (0.7843) and average E (5.261) of the six duck populations were all high, indicating that the gene polymorphisms and genetic diversity were high. The test of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium showed that the six populations in this study were all in Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium. The F-statistic analysis results showed the range of FST was from 0.0205 (AJ515895) to 0.2558 (AJ515896). The mean FST was 0.0936. Phylogenetic study revealed that Peking duck (Z1 and Z4), Shaoxing duck, Cherry Valley duck and Aobaixing duck were clustered in one group, while the Muscovy duck was clustered in one group alone. The phylogenetic relationships among different populations were in accordance with their breeding history and distribution. Our data suggested that the 20 microsatellite loci were effective markers for analysis of genetic relationships among duck populations.

  • This study was carried out to establish genetic understanding of three Sasang constitutions of Taeumin, Soeumin and Soyangin by Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA(RAPD) analysis. We have applied RAPD analysis to pooled DNA sample as a means to achieve rapid screening of large numbers of primers for their capacity to reveal constitutions-specific polymorphisms. From an initial 440 primers, 13 polymorphic primers between different constitutions were selected. Bandsharing(BS) and mean average percentage difference(MAPD) calculated within and between three constitutions using RAPD fingerprint data showed a higher degree of homogenity within than between the constitutions and indicated measurable divergence between three constitutions. The RAPD bandsharing(BS) values ranged from 0.71 to 0.73 between the three constitutions. The interconstitution divergence was narrower between Taeumin and Soeumin, than between the other paired constitution comparisons. The genetic distance between the three constitutions was measured by BS values. Genetic distance by RAPD analysis was 0.007 between Taeumin and Soeumin, and 0.014 between Soyang and the others. In conclusion, the genetic distance of Teaumin and Soumin was closer than that of Soyangin in the analysis of RAPD by using 440 primers.

  • Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) is one of the multipurpose tree species distributed in the tropical and sub-tropical climates. It is an important fruit yielding tree that supports the livelihood and has high social and cultural values for rural communities. The vegetative, reproductive, qualitative, and quantitative traits of tamarind vary widely. Characterization of phenotypic and genetic structure is essential for the selection of suitable accessions for sustainable cultivation and conservation. This study aimedto examine the genetic relationship among the collected accessions of sweet, red, and sour tamarind by using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers. Nine accessions were collected from germplasm gene banks and subjected to marker analysis. Fifteen highly polymorphic primers generated a total of 169 fragments, out of which 138 bands were polymorphic. The polymorphic information content of RAPD markers varied from 0.10 to 0.44, and the Jaccard's similarity coefficient values ranged from 0.37 to 0.70. The genetic clustering showed a sizable genetic variation in the tamarind accessions at the molecular level. The molecular and biochemical variations in the selected accessions are very important for developing varieties with high sugar, anthocyanin, and acidity traits in the ongoing tamarind improvement program.

  • A total of 64 individuals of Acanthogobius flavimanus, which inhabit the coast of Korea, were collected from 8 regions from July to August 2023. A haplotype network and a phylogenetic tree were created. The genomic DNA of the target fish species was compared and analyzed with the genomic DNA of four regions in Japan downloaded from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). In the haplotype network of Acanthogoboius flavimanus, Eocheong-do (EC) and Goseong (MAJ) exhibited low genetic similarity with other regions in Korea and Japan. The Phylogenetic tree showed that the population of MAJ exhibited differences in genetic structure compared to populations in other regions of Korea and Japan, indicating a distant relationship. Most marine organisms are known to migrate and spread via ocean currents, which is the most crucial factor promoting gene flow through larvae between populations. The haplotype of Acanthogobius flavimanus in MAJ differs from the haplotypes in Korea and Japan. The population in MAJ is believed to have limited genetic exchange due to the North Korea Cold Currents. We identified haplotype patterns based on the geographical distribution of Acanthogobius flavimanus off the coast of Korea and inferred that ocean currents have some influence on genetic distances.

  • The article demonstrates a method of studying human health and nutrition by applying a multi-disciplinary approach and examines how humans developed and survived by adjusting to their environment. This process involves physiological, cultural and genetic adaptation both independently and interactively. This study postulates that a sound human health may be the result of balance between nutrition and environmental conditions. It is noted that there is a positive correlation between malaria and fava bean intake, and sickle cell anemia and cassava intake. It is also suggested that the difference in disease structure in soybean and non-soybean consumption cultures can be explained by an ecological approach to studying nutrition. This study further suggest that the relationship between nutrition and socio-cultural system. epidmiological study of nutrition and cultural environment nutrition and conceptual characteristics, nutrition and food intake pattern, nutrition and health sociological functions and the physioloical, cultural and genetic adaptation can all be stimulating research subjects to be studied form and ecological point of view. This article also includes the results from a series of ecological studies conducted by the author investigating the relationship between nutritional status of Korean breast-feeding mothers and the composition of the human milk and also the Vitamin D status of Korean and their lifestyle. • A cell design model based on operation sequence is proposed for maximizing the total parts flow within cells considering the data of Process plans for parts, Production volume, and cell size. A relationship between machines is calculated on the basis of the process plans for parts obtained from process plan sheets. Then the machines are classified into machine cells using the relationship. The model is formulated as a 0-1 integer programming and a genetic algorithm approach is developed to solve the model. The developed approach is tested and Proved using actual industrial data. Experimental results indicate that the approach is appropriate for large-size cell design problems efficiently.

  • In modern dynamic management environment, there is growing recognition that information & knowledge management systems are essential for CEO's Efficient/effective decision making, As a key component to cope with this current, we suggest the management performance analysis system based on Knowledge Discovery in Database (KDD). The system measures management performance that is considered with both VA(Value-Added), which represents stakeholder's point of view and EVA(Economic Value-Added), which represents shareholder's point of view, The relationship between management performance and some 80 financial ratios is analyzed, and then important financial ratios are drawn out. In analyzing the relationship, we applied KDD process which includes such as multidimensional cube, OLAP(On -Line Analytic Process), data mining and AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process). To demonstrate the performance of the system, we conducted a case study using financial data over the 16-years from 1981 to 1996 of Korean automobile industry which is taken from database of KISFAS(Korea Investors Services Financial Analysis System).

  • Product recommender system is one of the most popular techniques for customer relationship management. In addition, collaborative filtering (CF) has been known to be one of the most successful recommendation techniques in product recommender systems. However, CF has some limitations such as sparsity and scalability problems. This study proposes hybrid cluster analysis and case-based reasoning (CBR) to address these problems. CBR may relieve the sparsity problem because it recommends products using customer profile and transaction data, but it may still give rise to scalability problem. Thus, this study uses cluster analysis to reduce search space prior to CBR for scalability Problem. For cluster analysis, this study employs hybrid genetic and K-Means algorithms to avoid possibility of convergence in local minima of typical cluster analyses. This study also develops a Web-based prototype system to test the superiority of the proposed model.

  • Recently, there have been many studies in medicine related to genetic analysis. Many genetic studies have been performed to find genes associated with complex diseases. To find out how genes are related to disease, we need to understand not only the simple relationship of genotypes but also the way they are related to phenotype. Multi-block data, which is a summation form of variable sets, is used for enhancing the analysis of the relationships of different blocks. By identifying relationships through a multi-block data form, we can understand the association between the blocks in comprehending the correlation between them. Several statistical analysis methods have been developed to understand the relationship between multi-block data. In this paper, we will use generalized canonical correlation methodology to analyze multi-block data from the Korean Association Resource project, which has a combination of single nucleotide polymorphism blocks, phenotype blocks, and disease blocks.
