  • Sintering behavior and electrical properties of CeO$_2$ system were investigated as a function of the amount of Gd:$_2$O$_3$, and Sm$_2$O$_3$, addition. Doped CeO$_2$ consisted of a homogeneous solid solution of the cubic fluorite structure within the amount of addition from 0 mol% to 15 mol%. Grain growth rate of Gd$_2$O$_3$-doped CeO$_2$ was much smaller than that of pure CeO$_2$, while densification rate was considerably larger. Thus doped CeO$_2$ showed a higher density than pure CeO$_2$. The electrical conductivity of Ce$_1$-$_{x}$Sm$_{x}$O$_1$-$_{x}$/2 was increased up to x = 0.2. However, with further increasing dopant concentrations, the magnitude of the conductivity was found to decrease remarkably. The ionic conductivity value obtained at $700^{\circ}C$ for 10 mol% Sm$_2$O$_3$-doped CeO$_2$ electrolyte was 4.6${\times}$10$^{-2}$ S$.$$cm^{-1}$ /.EX> /.

  • This study investigated the phase transformation of the REBa$_2$Cu$_3$$O_{7-x}$ (RE=Nd, Gd, Dy) superconductor, and CCT (Continuous-Cooling-Transformation) along with the TTT (Time-Temperature-Transformation) diagrams are suggested according to the isothermal and continuous cooling heat-treatments. The peritectic temperature of the 123 phases decreased approximately 3$0^{\circ}C$ when the ionic radius of the rare-earth elements was reduced. The optimum cooling rate where BC and Cu-free phases do not exist was 0.001$^{\circ}C$/s. At this cooling late, the 123 phase grew with a c-axis Perpendicular to the surface and had a well-distributed 211 phase. When the oxygen partial pressure was reduced Outing isothermal heat-treatment, the formation temperature of the 211 phase decreased. In addition, the formation temperature of the 123 phases decreased from 100$0^{\circ}C$ (Nd-123) to 9$25^{\circ}C$ (Gd-123), and finally 875$^{\circ}C$ (Dy-123) according to the decrease in the ionic radius of the tare-earth elements. Compared to Nd-123, Gd- and Dy-123 had a better texture with a well-distributed 211 phase.e.

  • CsI:Gd crystal was grown by the Bridgeman method and its scintillation properties were investigated. The wavelength peak of the luminescence spectrum for the crystal excited by X-ray was 419 nm. The range of the spectrum was from 300 nm to 800 nm. The spectrum well matched to the quantum efficiency of a typical bi-alkali photo-multiplier tube(PMT). An energy resolution of 48.2 % was obtained for 662 keV ${\gamma}$-rays of $^{137}Cs$. The three decay times were obtained as a fast(557.4 ns, 42.2 %), intermediate (1.78 ${\mu}s$, 29.7 %) and slow (5.43 ${\mu}s$, 28.1 %) components, respectively.

  • Red europium(III) and green terbium(III) activating phosphors have been doped and co-doped in gadolinium oxide supports by a hydrothermal method. Scanning electron microscope images reveal that they are one-dimensional nanorods of 40~50 wide and 250~300 nm long. The gadolinium oxide supports show Gd(OH)3 of hexagonal phase and Gd2O3 of cubic crystal structure before and after a thermal annealing, respectively based on X-ray diffraction analysis. Their physicochemical characteristics have further been examined by photoluminescence spectroscopy, FT-IR, UV-visible absorption, and optical microscope. The emission colors are characterized by CIE coordinates. In addition, the emissions from Eu(III) and Tb(III) are assigned to $5D0{\rightarrow}7FJ$ (J=0,1,2,3,4) and $5D4{\rightarrow}FJ$ (J=6,5,4,3), respectively.

  • The syntheses of DTPA-bis(amide) conjugates of phosphonated cyclohexane moieties (5a-d) and their Gd(III) complexes of the type $[Gd(L)(H_2O)]{\cdot}nH_2O$ (6a-d; L = 5a-d) are described. All new compounds have been characterized by microanalysis and spectroscopic techniques. High $r_1$ relaxivities of aqueous solutions of 6a-d are observed to be in the range of $10.7-18.3\;mM^{-1}sec^{-1}$, which compare much better than that of $Omniscan^{(R)}$ ($r_1=3.90\;mM^{-1}sec^{-1}$).
