pMOSFET having 10 ${\mu}um$ thickness Gd layer has been tested to be used as a slow neutron sensor. The total thermal neutron cross section for the Gd is 47,000 barns and the cross section value drops rapidly with increasing neutron energy. When slow neutrons are incident to the Gd layer, the conversion electrons are emitted by the neutron absorption process. The conversion electrons generate electron-hole pairs in the $SiO_2$ layer of the pMOSFET. The holes are easily trapped in Oxide and act as positive charge centers in the $SiO_2$ layer. Due to the induced positive charges, the threshold turn-on voltage of the pMOSFET is changed. We have found that the voltage change is proportional to the accumulated slow neutron dose, therefore the pMOSFET having a Gd nuclear reaction layer can be used for a slow neutron dosimeter. The Gd-pMOSFET were tested at HANARO neutron beam port and $^{60}CO$ irradiation facility to investigate slow neutron response and gamma response respectively. Also the pMOSFET without Gd layer were tested at same conditions to compare the characteristics to the Gd-pMOSFET. From the result, we have concluded that the Gd-pMOSFET is very sensitive to the slow neutron and can be used as a slow neutron dosimeter. It can also be used in a mixed radiation field by subtracting the voltage change value of a pMOSFET without Gd from the value of the Gd-pMOSFET.
In Fe/Gd multilayers, patterning effect on the interlayer coupling was studied by comparing patterned and unpatterned samples that were cut from a multilayer film. A comparative study of the two samples via temperature dependent Gd-specific magnetization vector using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) shows that the temperature dependence of the Gd magnetization vector can be modified in the patterned sample due to a competition between the patterning and antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling effects.
The new Modified-690Gd alloy, namely as Ni-30Cr-(10-x) Fe-xGd (x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5,2.0, 3.0 wt%) for function structure integrated thermal neutron shielding has been prepared and characterized. The Modified-690Gd alloy was mainly composed of γ austenite matrix and (Ni, Cr, Fe)5Gd precipitated along grain boundaries. The new Modified-690Gd alloy had great mechanical properties, which had the tensile strength exceeding 620 MPa and the elongation being above 50%. Meanwhile, this alloy had excellent weldability and good corrosion resistance in boric acid. The new Modified-690Gd alloy is expected to be a kind of high efficiency thermal neutron shielding materials.
Nanosized $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ red phosphor is prepared using a template method from metal salt impregnated into a crystalline cellulose and is dispersed using a bead mill wet process. The driving force of the surface coating between $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ and mica is induced by the Coulomb force. The red phosphor nanosol is effectively coated on mica flakes by the electrostatic interaction between positively charged $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ and negatively charged mica above pH 6. To prepare $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$-coated mica ($Gd_2O_3:Eu/mica$), the coating conditions are optimized, including the stirring temperature, pH, calcination temperature, and coating amount (wt%) of $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$. In spite of the low luminescence of the $Gd_2O_3:Eu/mica$, the luminescent property is recovered after calcination above $600^{\circ}C$ and is enhanced by increasing the $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ coating amount. The $Gd_2O_3:Eu/mica$ is characterized using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, zeta potential measurements, and fluorescence spectrometer analysis.

The new green and red phosphors for PDP application activated by T $b^{3+}$ and E $u^{3+}$ were synthesized, and their photoluminance properties were investigated. It was found that the brightness of $Al_3$Gd $B_4$$O_{12}$ :T $b^{3+}$ green phosphor under 147nm VUV irradiation was higher than that of commercial Z $n_2$$SiO_4$:M $n^{2+}$ phosphor. But the emitting intensity of A1$_3$Gd $B_4$$O^{12}$ :E $u^{3+}$ red phosphor was inferior to the commercial (Y,Gd)B $O_3$:E $u^{3+}$. $Al_3$Gd $B_4$$O_{12}$ Phosphor had a strong excitation band at 160nm associated with the host absorption, and also the photoluminance excitation intensity of $Al_3$Gd $B_4$$O_{12}$ :T $b^{3+}$ was higher than that of Z $n_2$$SiO_4$:M $n^{2+}$, but the intensity of $Al_3$Gd $B_4$$O_{12}$ :E $u^{3+}$ phosphor was smaller than (Y,Gd)B $O_3$:E $u^{3+}$ phosphor In the VUV range. C $e^{3+}$ co-doping in A1$_3$Gd $B_4$$O^{12}$ :E $u^{3+}$ and substitution of $Al^{3+}$ by G $a^{3+}$ A1$_3$Gd $B_4$$O^{12}$ :E $u^{3+}$ phosphor were tried, but they did not improved the optical property .d the optical property .ty .
The fabrications condition and superconducting properties of top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) processed $GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Gd123) bulk superconductors were studied. Processing parameters (a maximum temperature ($T_{max}$), a temperature for crystal growth ($T_G$) and a cooling rate ($R_G$) through a peritectic temperature ($T_P$) for the fabrication of single grain Gd123 superconductors were optimized. The magnetic levitation forces, trapped magnetic fields, superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) and critical current density ($J_c$) of the Gd123 bulks superconductors were estimated. Single grain Gd123 bulk superconductors were successfully fabricated at the optimized processing condition. The $T_c$ of a TSMG processed Gd123 sample was 92.5 K and the $J_c$ at 77 K and 0 T was approximately $50kA/cm^2$. The trapped magnetic field contour and magnetic levitation forces were dependent on the top surface morphology of TSMG processed Gd123 samples. The single grain Gd123 samples, field-cooled at 77 K using a Nd-B-Fe permanent magnet with 5.27 kG and 30 mm dia., showed the trapped magnetic field contour of a single grain with a maximum of 4 kG at the sample center. The maximum magnetic levitation forces of the single grain Gd123 sample, field-cooled or zero field-cooled, were 40 N and 107 N, respectively.
Solvent extraction experiments have been performed to separate Gd and Nd from chloride solution with PC88A and saponified PC88A. In the experimental ranges conducted in this study, the extraction percentage of Gd was higher than that of Nd. Use of 40% saponified PC88A increased the distribution coefficients of Gd and Nd. A chemical model was developed to predict the distribution coefficients of the two metals from the initial extraction conditions. The measured distribution coefficients of Gd and Nd with PC88A and saponified PC88A agreed well with those calculated in this study.
The effect of UO$_2$ powder property and oxygen potential on characteristics of sintered UO$_2$-Gd$_2$O$_3$ fuel pellets has been investigated. Two types of powder, mixture of AUC-UO$_2$ and Gd$_2$O$_3$powders (type I) and mixture of ADU-UO$_2$ and Gd$_2$O$_3$powders (type II), have been prepared, pressed, and sintered at 168$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Four sintering atmospheres with different mixing ratios of $CO_2$to H$_2$ gas ranging from 0 to 0.3 have been used. UO$_2$-Gd$_2$O$_3$ fuel has lower sintered density than UO$_2$ fuel, and the density drop is larger for powder type I than for powder type II. As the oxygen potential increases, the sintered density of UO$_2$-2wt% Gd$_2$O$_3$pellets increases but that of UO$_2$-10wt% Gd$_2$O$_3$ pellets decreases. It is found that pores are newly formed in UO$_2$-10wt% Gd$_2$O$_3$ pellets in accordance with the decrease in density. The grain size of UO$_2$-Gd$_2$O$_3$ fuel increases and a short range G4 distribution becomes homogeneous as the oxygen potential increases. A long range ed distribution and grain structure are inhomogeneous for powder type II. The lattice parameter of (U,Gd)O$_2$solid solution decreases linearly with Gd$_2$O$_3$ content. The dependence of UO$_2$-Gd$_2$O$_3$fuel characteristics on powder type and sintering atmosphere have been discussed.
We have investigated the effect of $Y_2O_3$ nanoparticles on the pinning properties of $Y_2O_3$-doped $GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ (GdBCO) films. Both undoped and $Y_2O_3$-doped GdBCO films were grown on $CeO_2$-buffered MgO (100) single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) using KrF (${\lambda}=248nm$) laser. The $Y_2O_3$ doping contents were controlled up to ~ 2.5 area% by varying the internal angles of $Y_2O_3$ sectors put on the top surface of GdBCO target. Compared with the $Gd_2O_3$-doped GdBCO films previously reported by our group [1], the $Y_2O_3$-doped GdBCO films exhibited less severe critical temperature ($T_c$) drop and thus slightly enhanced critical current densities ($J_c$) and pinning force densities ($F_p$) at 65 K for the applied field parallel to the c-axis of the GdBCO matrix (B//c) with increasing the doping content. Below 40 K, the in-field $J_c$ and $F_p$ values of all $Y_2O_3$-doped GdBCO films exhibited higher than those of undoped GdBCO film, suggesting that $Y_2O_3$ inclusions might act as effective pinning centers.
Gd1-xSrxMnO3(0$\leq$X$\leq$0.6) as the cathode for solid oxide fuel cell was synthesized by citrate process and studied for its crystal structure, electrical conductivity, thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), and investigated reactivity with 8 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia(8YSZ) or Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 (CGO). The crystal structure of Gd1-xSrxMnO3 changed from orthorhombic (0$\leq$X$\leq$0.3) through cubic (0.4$\leq$X$\leq$0.5) to tetragonal structure (X=0.6). When Sr contents was increased, the electrical conductivity of Gd1-xSrxMnO3 was inthose of La1-xSrxMnO3, 8YSZ and CGO if Sr content was above 30mol%. TEC of Gd1-xSrxMnO3 was increased with Sr content. After heat treatment at 1300$^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours, reaction product of Gd1-xSrxMnO3 and 8YSZ was SrZrO3. However CGO had no reaction product with Gd1-xSrxMnO3.
