This study was conducted to develop a new synthetic breed of Korean native chicken. The combining ability and reciprocal effects for production traits were estimated on 1,157 hens from a $5{\times}5$ diallel cross-mating design using grand parent stock (GPS) lines of Korean native chicken. Body weight, viability, age at first egg laying, egg weight, and hen-day egg production were measured and analyzed. The results showed that the general combining ability (GCA) of the survival rate during laying periods was -9.6 to 11.1, with the highest value obtained in the W strain. Additionally, the GCA of the body weight at 12 weeks was -209.7 to 162.2, with the highest value obtained in the F strain. The GCA for age at fist egg laying was estimated to be -2.8 to 3.7, while the GCA of egg weight was -0.91 to 0.96, and the GCA of hen-day egg production was -4.9 to 6.0. In the estimation of specific combining ability, the YW combination showed the highest survival rate, FW showed the highest body weight at 12 weeks, and GW showed the highest hen-day egg production. The reciprocal effects were significantly different among crosses for almost all productivity traits. In identical breeding combinations, differences in ability were observed when the maternal or paternal breeds were switched. The mean value based on combining ability was higher in WY, WF, and GW combinations for survival rate; GF, HG, and HF combinations for body weight at 12 weeks; and GW, YW, and FW combinations for hen-day egg production. It is concluded that the GF and HF combinations, which have excellent growth performance and moderate survival rate, are the most desirable paternal parent stock (PS) strains, and the GW and FW combinations, which have great laying performance and moderate body weight, are the most desirable maternal PS strains.
The study was conducted to obtain the genetic information on heterosis and combining ability of the quantitative characters for F1 hybrid breeding in silkworms. Six parental varieties and each set of 30 diallel crosses in F1's were used as materials, and bred on the randomized complete block design with three replications. Fourteen characters were observed with the twenty samples in each tray. The data were analyzed for (1) heterosis and combining ability in F1 hybrid. The heterosis in the weight and the length of cocoon showed positively high at 24.51%, and 23.4%, respectively and the weight of the whole cocoon as well as the weight of the whole cocoon layer showed a siginificant heterosis ranging from 15.56% to 15.71% and from 17.14% to 19.01%, but the fifth and the total instar period showed negative heterosis. It was found that the combination between, C70XRomogua and N9 X Romogua showed highly a negative heterosis on the fifth instar period and for the cocoon weight. The female of N9+Sansuian and the male of Romogua X Sansurian have a high heterosis effect, on the cocoon shell weight, and Sansurian X Romogua(reciprocal) on the length and the weight of cocoon filament with no regard to sexuality. The significant maternal and cytoplasmic effect on heterosis of the cocoon weight and the cocoon shell weight were observed with the combinations, N9 X C5, N63 X C70 and on the length of the cocoon filament with the combinations, Sansurian X N63, Sansurian X C5, Sansurian X C70 and N9 X C70, N63 X C70 on the weight of cocoon filament. As mean squared of GCA, SCA and RCA were significant with these combining ability for all characters resulted from additive and non-additive altogether and there is a significant difference between reciprocals. Sansurian showed a negative GCA effect on the fifth and total larval duration, but the higher positive GCA effects took places with varieties N9 and C5 on the length, width, weight of cocoon, cocoon shell weight, percentage of cocoon shell weight, length and weight of cocoon filament, percentage of raw-silk with no regard to both generations and silkworm sexuality. The values of SCA between the cross combinations varied generation-wise and sex-wise. It was shown that SCA value for the fifth instar period was highly negative for Sansurian X C70, Romogua X C70, Sansurian X C5, Romogua X C5, but it was positive effect on the cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight with N9 X C5, and C70 X Sansurian, on the length of cocoon filament with N9 X C5, Romogua X Sansurian on the weight of cocoon filament between Romogua and N63 and on the percentage of raw-silk between the combination of Sansurian X Romoga.

Heterosis, combining ability, genetic components, effective factor no. and heritability for yield of seed cotton per plant, boll no., seeds per boll, seed length, seed width and lint weight per boll were investigated in $5{\times}5$ half diallel set of crosses involving diverse upland cultivars. Both heterosis and heterobeltiosis for yield per plant, boll number, seed length and lint weight showed significantly negative values. Both general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) showed highly significant. Overdominance was observed for yield per plant, boll number, seeds per boll and seed width, complete dominance for seed length and partial dominance for lint weight. The number of effective factor was estimated as two for yield per plant, boll number and seed length and estimated as one for seeds per boll, seed width and lint weight. Narrow sense heritability was low for yield per plant, boll number and seeds per boll. Broad sense heritability was very high for all the characters excepting lint weight.
Five parents and their 10 $F_1$ crosses of maize (Zea mays L.) were tested by means of diallel analysis for the inheritance of peroxidase activity following Puccinia sorghi rust infection. Peroxidase activity was measured at day zero and at 2 days and 8 days after inoculation. Peroxidase activity was increased significantly by P. sorghi infection in all 15 genotypes after 8 days, but not after 2 days. Highly significant differences in peroxidase activity were detected among the 15 genotypes. The highly genera] resistant inbred, CM105, and its hybrids showed exceptionally high peroxidase activity in both healthy and infected plants. However, another highly resistant inbred, Oh545, showed exceptionally low peroxidase activity. Significant general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) means quares were detected for peroxidase activity independent of disease. GCA mean spuares, however, were consistently a major contiribution to the inheritance of peroxidase activity in the infected plants whereas SCA men square contributions were minor. Rust resistant maize plants controlling mongenic dominant $Rp_1^d$gene showed stronger peroxidase reroxidase responses than their susceptible counterparts in the gel electrophoresis and densiometric tracings. The increased peroxidase activity occurred in both major leaf peroxidases, $Px_3\;and\; Px_7$.
Five parents which showed differential response to thiobencarb and their $F_1$ hybrids were treated with thiobencarb (S-[(4-chlorophenyl) methyl]diethylcarbamothioate) at 2 and 4 kg ai/ha in order to investigate the inheritance of rice (Oryza sativa L.) to the herbicide. In the analysis of diallel crosses for tolerance of rice cultivars to the herbicide, highly significant GCA (general combining ability) and SCA (specific combining ability) effects were observed at both herbicide rates using the parameters of plant height and dry weight ; the GCA effect being greater than the SCA effect. The additive effects appeared to be more prevalent than dominance effects, and partial dominance was recognized in relation to herbicide tolerance in the different rice cultivars. Higher heritabilities in the narrow and broad senses were observed at 4 kg ai/ha. The heritabilities in the narrow sense for plant height and dry weight were 0.726 and 0. 743, respectively. IR9660-50-3-1 which showed the highest GCA effects seemed to possess more dominant genes related to herbicide tolerance than the other rice cultivars tested.
Cold-induced sterility is a problem of rice (Oryza sativa L.) production in temperate regions and high elevation tropics. The present study was conducted to measure combining ability, determine character associations. and to evaluate effectiveness of F$_2$selection for tolerance to this type of cold injury. The F$_1$, F$_2$, F$_3$ and reciprocal backcross F$_1$ populations of a nine-parent diallel were grown at Davis, California. a relatively cool location for rice. Additive genetic variance was predominant but some non -additive genetic variance existed for cold tolerance. Good general combining ability (GCA) was generally associated with the cold tolerant parents, 'M-201', and 'L-201', and poor GCA with the most susceptible parent. 7703008. Sterility was positively correlated with late heading. negatively with mature plant height. and negatively with spikelet number. Of the three agronomic characters, heading date had the greatest influence on sterility. Selection of F$_2$'s in seven crosses involving M-101, the most cold-tolerant parent, was effective for increasing cold tolerance. Realized heritability estimates for cold tolerance averaged 0.53, and observed selection response for cold-induced sterility averaged -9.4 percentage points.
This experiment was carried out to study the heterosis and the GCA and SCA effects for days to heading of F 1 populations produced from eight wheat cultivar diallel. Greater heterosis for early heading was exhibited under the high temperature condition than under the low temperature conditions, and same results were also observed under short day condition rather than long day conditions. There are highly significant mean for GCA and SCA at all environmental conditions. Yecora F70 was showed the greatest effect, and Bezostaya and Blueboy were exhibited less effects of CCA for early heading. Significant GCA effect was expressed at high temperature and short day condition, indicating that this condition provides a better opportunity to select the materials for earliness. Selections of combination with greater effect of SCA for early heading such as Suweon 169 \times Yecora F70 were discussed for practical utilization.

The correlation among days to germination, days to flower, days to seed ripening and number of seeds per a pod and their combining were studied in 15 F1s from the partial six-parent diallel cross in Petunia hybrida. The days to flowering, days to germination and seed number per a pod showed high positive correlation together, however germination percentage and number of seed showed negative correlation with days to ability(SCA) were highly significant for all the characters. The estimates of variance components of SCA were greater than those of GCA for all the characters, showing preponderance of non-additive gene actions for these characters. The line of A and C showed relatively high GCA effect for days to germination and days to flower and the lines of C and G for germination, days to seed ripening and number of seeds per a pod. The crosses of D×G and E×F exhibited high SCA effect for decreasing days to flower and days to germination, and increasing germination percentage and number of seeds per a pod. The broad sense heritability was generally high compared to narrow sense one in the 5 characters. The higher heritability values of both broad and narrow sense were shown in the days to ripening and number of seeds per a pod.
