  • Airborne chlorpyrifos concentrations in formulation workplaces have not been determined in Korea. The aim of the study was to evaluate chlorpyrifos concentrations of air in a formulation workplace and recognize the RBC cholinesterase activities for the formulation workers. 30 air samples (personal or area sampling) were collected and bood samples from 10 workers were collected for RBC chlorinesterase (RBC AChE) activity in a factory on May 2008. Air samples were collected by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) method and were analyzed by GC-MS. Airborne chlorpyrifos concentrations ranged from 0.003 to $12.90mg/m^3$ and geometric mean (GM) was $0.15\;mg/m^3.$ Compared to Korean Occupational Exposure Limit (KOEL) of 0.1 (2011) or $0.2\;mg/m^3$ (2008), at 95% confidence, airborne concentrations exceeded the KOEL 69.7% or 56.1% of the time or less, indicating that this concentration level was unacceptable according to exposure assessment using a LogNorm2$^{(R)}$. Since the workers were continually at work on the organophosphate or carbamate pesticides formulation, individual baseline for RBC AChE activity was not determined. As the results of comparison with reference average value of RBC AChE activity, it was found that a worker was below 70% RBC AChE activity and five workers were abnormal.

  • A number of essential oils from Mongolian aromatic plants are claimed to have antimicrobial activities. The essential oil of Dracocephalum foetidum, a popular essential oil used in Mongolian traditional medicine, was examined for its antimicrobial activity. Eight human pathogenic microorganisms including B. subtilis, S. aureus, M. lutens, E. hirae, S. mutans, E. coli, C. albicans, and S. cerevisiae were examined. The essential oil of Dracocephalum foetidum exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against most of the pathogenic bacteria and yeast strains that were tested; by both the agar diffusion method and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay ($MIC\;range\;was\;26-2592{\mu}g/ml$). Interestingly, Dracocephalum foetidum even showed antimicrobial activity against methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. We also analyzed the chemical composition of the oil by GC-MS and identified several major components, including n-Mentha-1,8-dien-10-al, limonene, geranial, and neral.

  • To investigate the antimicrobial activities of mustard seed(Brassica juncea), a series of solbents were examined for extraction of antimicrobial substances from mustard seed and then antimicrobial substances were identified by simultaneous distillation extraction(SDE) and GC-MS methods. Water and methanol extracts of mustard seed showed antimicrobial activitries against experimental strains while those from hexane extract almost was not observed. The distilled components of mustard seed by SDE method showed strong antimicrobial activities, methanol extract of residues fraction exhibited a little, and water layer with the exception of distilled components showed no antimicrobiol activities. The 30 varieties of distilled components including 3 types of isothiocyanate such as 3-isothiocyanate-1-propene, 4-isothiocyanate-1-butene, and 3-isothiocyanatoethyl benzene were identified from mustard seed.

  • This study investigated the micropollutants present in raw water supplied for the several drinking water treatment plants in Seoul. The target sample waters were collected from the several sites, such as Jayang (JY), Kuui (KI), Paldang (PD) and Kangbuk (KB) at the Han-River stream. The analytical method used in this study enable us to detect about 300 kinds of chemicals commonly found in surface water at ppt level by GC-ion trap MS. In this study, the consideration on the analytic results focused on the four hazardous organics, such as benzenes, phenols, phthalates and pesticides. The numbers of each detected micropollutant were 1~8 kinds for benzenes, 1~7 kinds for phenols, 5~7 kinds for phthalates and 1~9 kinds for pesticides. For the pesticides, the higher concentration was detected in the water samples collected from PD and KB adjacent to the farming area, and at June and July, which is the busy farming season. The total concentrations of each micropollutants detected at all the sites were significantly lower than those of drinking water regulation in Korea as well as other advanced countries. However, the frequently detected micropollutants requires the steady and precise monitoring for the effective management of drinking water source.

  • The bioequivalence of two tiropramide products was evaluated in 18 health male volunteers following oral administration. Test product was Tira $m^{R}$ tablet (Shin Poong SP-102) (Shin Poong Pharm. Co., Ltd.) and reference product was Tirop $a^{R}$ tablet (Dae Woong Pharm. Co., Ltd.) One capsule of the test and reference product containing 100 mg of tropramide.hydrochloride was administered to the volunteers by randomized two period cross-over study (2 $\times$ 2 Latin square method). The drug concentration in plasma was determined by GC/MS for over a period of 12hours after administration. Analysis of variance reveal that there are no differences in AUC (area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time zero to infinity), Cmax (maximum plasma concentration) and Tmax (time to reach Cmax). The differences of mean AUC, Cmax and Tmax between two products were 3.85, 1.47 and -3.6%, respectively. Minimum detectable differences (%) at $\alpha$=0.1 were all less than 20% given as a guideline (18.07, 17.00 and 20.69% for AUC, Cmax and Tmax, respectively). From these results, the two products are bioequivalent.ent.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to determine whether essential oils had anti-influenza A/WS/33 virus activity and whether there were specific compounds associated with this activity. Methods: There were 63 essential oils evaluated for anti-influenza (A/WS/33 virus) activity using a cytopathic effect reduction method. The chemical composition of the anti-influenza essential oils was phytochemically analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results: The antiviral assays demonstrated that 11 of the 62 essential oils ($100{\mu}g/mL$) possessed anti-influenza activity, reducing visible cytopathic effects of influenza A/WS/33 virus activity by > 30%. Furthermore, marjoram, clary sage and anise oils exhibited anti-influenza A/WS/33 virus activity of > 52.8%. However, oseltamivir (the anti-influenza A and B drug), showed cytotoxicity at the same concentration ($100{\mu}g/mL$) as the essential oils. The chemical composition detected by GC-MS analysis, differed amongst the 3 most potent anti-viral essential oils (marjoram, clary sage and anise oils) except for linalool, which was detected in all 3 essential oils. Conclusion: This study demonstrated anti-influenza activity in 11 essential oils tested, with marjoram, clary sage and anise essential oils being the most effective at reducing visible cytopathic effects of the A/WS/33 virus. All 3 oils contained linalool, suggesting that this may have anti-influenza activity. Further investigation is needed to characterize the antiviral activity of linalool against influenza A/WS/33 virus.

  • We describe a modified method for effectively pretreating soil highly contaminated with ANT or BaA (both initial Conc. are 500 mg/kg soil), i.e., we apply Fenton oxidation in which ethanol is added to increase ANT and BaA removal. At least 0.5 $m\ell$ or 0.75 $m\ell$ of ethanol were added to 1 g of artificially ANT or BaA-contaminated soils (i.e., alluvial and sandy soil), respectively. This was followed by Feton oxidation in which various amounts of $H_2O$$_2$ and Fe$^{2+}$ were added. The results showed more than 98 % of ANT or BaA removal efficiency However less than 10 % of ANT and BaA removal efficiency was obtained in addition of distilled water or sodium dodecy1 sulfate. Additionally, we employ GC-MS to identify the main oxidation product generated by the optimized Fenton reaction [i.e., ANT or BaA degraded in to 69-73% 9,10-anthracenedione (ANTDI) or 43-51% 7,12-benz(a)anthracenedione (BaADI), respectively]. The biodegradability of ANTDI or BaADI are subsequently confirmed to be much more rapid than that of ANT or BaA, respectively, results suggesting that Fenton oxidation with ethanol-microbial treatment can be effectively applied to remove ANT or BaA from soil.l.

  • The present study was performed to investigate photodegradation rate constants and degradation products of piperophos by the USEPA method. The pesticide was very stable in 16 days exposure of sunlight from October 3 to 22, 2003 and humic acid had no sensitizing effect on the photolysis of each pesticide in sunlight. In the UV irradiation test, piperophos was rapidly degraded as increasing UV intensity. In case of UV irradiation with TiO$_2$ and with TiO$_2$ powder amount, degradation of piperophos was slower than UV irradiation. In order to identify photolysis product, the extracts of degradation product was analyzed by GC/MS. The mass spectrum of photolysis product of piperophos was at m/z 166. It was suggested that the photolysis products of piperophos was O, O-dipropyl phosphorodithioate.

  • The antifungal activities of the essential oils from Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Abies holophylla, Larix kaempferi, Cryptomeria japonica and Chamaecyparis obtusa against Aspergillus fumigatus were evaluated. Essential oils were extracted from each conifer leaves for 8 h using water distillation method. The essential oil from A. holophylla appeared the strongest antifungal activity among the six oils with MIC value 0.125 mg/$m{\ell}$. The composition of the A. holophylla oil was analysed by GC/MS and then MIC was determined for main constituents of the oil. As the results, borneol and ${\alpha}$-bisabolol, which have a hydroxyl group, showed effective antifungal activities against A. fumigatus (0.25 mg/$m{\ell}$). In addition, the synergistic antifungal effects were observed in the combination of borneol and ${\alpha}$-bisabolol.

  • A phytochemical investigation of Spergularia marina (L.) Griseb. growing in Egypt, has been carried out, which resulted in the isolation of seven compounds from the different extracts of the plant namely; ${\beta}$-sitosterol glucoside, tricin (1) dihydroferulic acid (2), vanillic acid (3), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4), uracil (5) and 8-hydroxy cuminoic acid (6) Structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was carried out using different spectroscopic techniques. This is the first report for the isolation of these compounds from genus Spergularia. Furthermore, 8-Hydroxy cuminoic acid and uracil were isolated for the first time from family Caryophyllaceae. The chemical composition of the volatile components present in the petroleum ether extract of Spergularia marina (L.) Griseb. using combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is reported here for the first time. Of the 97 components present, 59 were identified including three sulfur containing compounds which represented about 1.8% of the volatiles of the total petroleum ether extract. This prompted us to study and report its possible antimicrobial activity. In addition, the antibacterial and antifungal screening of different extracts of Spergularia marina (L.) Griseb. as well as some isolates have been performed using agar diffusion method.
