  • The family Olividae includes predatory species with medium-sized, glossy, elongated oval-shaped shell. As sand-dwellers, they are broadly distributed in tropical and subtropical oceans. They feed mostly on other mollusks and carrions including sea snails and bivalves. To date, two species in the genus Amalda (subfamily Ancillinae) have been reported in Korean waters. In this study, Amalda rubiginosa (Swainson, 1823) was collected from Korean waters and morphologically described in details as a first record.

  • Based on investigation of archive collections of A.V. Zhirmunsky Institute of Marine Biology of the Far-Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Vladivostok) and O.A. Scarlato Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Saint Petersburg), as well as on the analysis of published data, the species composition of shell-bearing gastropod mollusks of the Russian waters of the East Sea (Sea of Japan), consisting of 331 species and subspecies, has been identified. The fourth part of the Review includes 46 species of Heterobranchia (Allogastropoda, Opistobranchia, and Pulmonata). Each species is assigned to a biogeographic grouping in the study area. Its type locality and habitat (depth and substrate) are also documented.

  • Two trochid shells of the genus Ginebis, G. crumpii(Pilsbry, 1893) and the genus Enida, E. japonica A. Adams, 1860, collected from the coast of Jeju Island in Korea are reported. Ginebis crumpii and Enida japonica are closely related to Calliostoma Swainson, but can be differentiated by the features of the aperture and umbilicus. These species are a new records to the Korean Molluscan fauna. At present, G. crumpii and E. japonica are the only species of the represented in Korean water. Including the new records in this study, the family Trichidae contains 30 genera and 57 species in Korean water.

  • The prevalence of the cercarial stage of an intestinal trematode, Haplorchis taichui, in thiarid snails (Gastropoda: Thiaridae) was investigated using light microscope and species-specific PCR procedures. A total of 988 snails were collected from Mae Taeng district, Chiang Mai province, northern Thailand, which comprised of 3 species; Melanoides tuberculata, Tarebia granifera, and Thiara scabra. The overall prevalence of pleurolophocercous cercariae was 21.7% as determined by the morphology. For genetic detection of H. taichui infection in snails, 2 primers Hapt_F (5'-GGCCAACGCAATCGTCATCC-3') and Hapt_R (5'-GCGTCGGGTTTCAGACATGG-3'), were used. The genomic DNA of H. taichui, which was used as a positive control, gave an amplification of the 256 bp fragment. The overall prevalence of H. taichui from specific PCR was 9.7%. The proportion of H. taichui among the pleurolophocercous cercariae in this study was 44.9%.

  • The karyotypes of Biomphalaria tenagophila collected from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were studied using the air-drying method. Somatic cells of this species had 2n=36. The 18 chromosome pairs were identified and classified into 3 groups. The diploid cell has 7 pairs of metacentric, 8 pairs of submetacentric, and 3 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. Observed chromosomes ranged from 2.4 to $6.4{\mu}m$, and the total length was $122.3{\mu}m$. This is the first report on the chromosome of B. tenagophila.

  • Sex ratio of a population is a key factor to determine reproductive rate of the population. If the population has skewed sex ratio to the male, the population size may decline gradually at an area which it inhabits, and, furthermore, if a species plays an ecologically important role in its community (e.g., a keystone species in Paine, 1966), its potential reproductive rate will be to form a characterized community because community structure is strongly influenced by the abundance of the ecologically important species (Hughes, 1986). A number of workers (e.g., Bryan et al., 1986 in Nucella lapillus; Spence et al., 1990 in Thais haemastoma) suggested that high frequency and/or late stage of imposex might affect the female mortality and normal reproduction adversely. Consequently, the imposex could affect sex ratio of natural population of some neogastropod including thaisid species. (omitted)

  • In general, intertidal gastropods display a considerable amount of intraspecific shell variation (De Wolf et al., 1998). Particularly, thaisid species, including Thais clavigera(=T.c.), have been shown a variety of shell variation in the world ocean (e.g. T, emerginata in Kitching, 1976). Nomura (1926) noted local variation of shell morphology based on five Japanese populations. Ahe (1985) classified Japanese T.c. into two forms (Form-C &. -P). In the Korean waters, a strong variation in nodule shape of T.c, shell has also been noted by Choe & Park (1997). Taxonomy of T.c. is controversial so far. (omitted)
