Gait kinematics and kinetics have a similar tendency between men and women, yet it remains unclear how walking while carrying a load affects the gait mechanism. Twenty adults walked with preferred velocity on level ground of 20 m relative to change of a load carriage (no load, 15%, 30% of the body weights) aimed to observe gait mechanism. We measured gait posture using the three-dimensional image analysis and ground reaction force system during stance phase on left foot. In main effect of gender difference, men showed increased displacement of center of gravity (COG) compared to women, and it showed more extended joint angle of hip and knee in sagittal plane. In main effect of a load difference, knee joint showed more flexed postuel relative to increase of load carriage. In main effect of load difference on the kinetic variables, medial-lateral force, anterior-posterior force (1st breaking, 2nd propulsive), vertical force, center of pressure (COP) area, leg stiffness, and whole body stiffness showed more increased values relative to increase of load carriage. Also, men showed more increased COP area compared to women. Interaction showed in the 1st anterior-posterior force, and as a result of one-way variance analysis, it was found that a load main effect had a greater influence on the increase in the magnitude of the braking force than the gender. The data in this study explains that women require little kinematic alteration compared to men, while men in more stiff posture accommodate an added load compared to women during gait. Additionally, it suggests that dynamic stability is maintained by adopting different gait strategies relative to gender and load difference.
Gait analysis trackers have been developed to monitor daily gait patterns to improve users' running performance and reduce the risk of injuries. A variety of gait analysis trackers are available on the market(e.g., foot pods, insoles). Depending on the type of gait analysis tracker, users' discomfort or satisfaction as well as required properties may differ. Hence, the purpose of this study was to compare and analyze user experience of three different types of commercial shoe-mounted gait analysis trackers and their mobile applications in a laboratory environment using questionnaires based on actual experiences of each product. Ten males and ten females who regularly enjoy walking and running exercises participated in the experiment. After the participants set up the tracker and application themselves without support from researchers, ten to thirty minutes' exercise was permitted on each product. Following this, the participants answered questionnaires containing evaluation variables on the device and mobile application, as well as satisfaction, intention to use, recommendation, and purchase. In addition, they were asked questions about the attractive features and shortcomings of each device and application. The results showed that the PRO-SPECS® smart insole was preferred over the others for ease of use, perceived durability, psychological burden of the design, and usefulness of the information provided by the application. Along with the results of questionnaire, this study also discussed strategies and recommendations for future product design and development.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of static balance performance on gait in elderly. The postural sway showed, The mean value of toe-heel was $1.41\pm0.51cm$ and left-right was $063\pm0.20cm$. In gait analysis, the mean value of each variable were swing phase $40.5\pm9.65\%$, stance phase $59.5\pm9.65\%$, stride length 0.79m, cadence $0.83\pm0.44step/sec$, velocity $0.57\pm0.32m/sec$, Knee up $34.7\pm31.0^{\circ}$, Knee down $-53.6\pm40.14^{\circ}$. Ankle up $12.14\pm13.94^{\circ}$, Ankle down $-16.8\pm25.0^{\circ}$ showed. 2. The correlation matrix between L-R sway and Toe-heel sway and gait variables was not showed. 3. In multiple regression test, there were no related variable.
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to improve the stroke patient's gait ability by applying a closed or kinetic chain lower limb exercise Methods : The study subjects were 48 hospitalized hemiplegic patients who agreed to participate in the study. 48 subjects went through the intervention: 24 in the experimental group and 24 in the control group. One set consisted of 10 repeats of the exercise. The subjects performed three sets of the exercise once a day, 5 times a week, for 6 weeks. Results : TUG and FGA were significantly improved in the experimental group. The spatio-temporal gait variables in the experimental group all showed significant improvement. In the control group, velocity, cadence, and double limb support showed significant improvement, Trunk sway angle showed significant improvement in all three axes in both groups. Conclusion : The results of this study indicate that a more positive effect in terms of improvement of the stroke patient's gait ability will be seen for closed rather than open kinetic chain lower limb resistance exercise.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the side-step tasks based circular training program (STCT) on balance and gait characteristics in stroke patients. Design: A randomized controlled trial Methods: Twenty-four stroke patients were randomly divided into two groups of twelve patients each. One group was applied with the STCT whereas the other group was treated with conservative physiotherapy (CP). The ability of gait was measured in 10m walking test and stride length on both side using BTS G-WALK (BTS Bioengineering S.p.A, Italy) and the ability of balance was measured in Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Timed Up and Go Test (TUG). Results: The STCT group was significant differences in the balance parameters of BBS and TUG (p<0.05) and showed significant differences in gait variables in 10m walking speed, stride length of affected and non-affected side after the experiment before and after the experiment (p<0.05). In addition, the STCT group showed a significant difference in BBS compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study confirmed that the side-step tasks based circular training program (STCT) improves balance and walking ability in stroke patients. STCT is expected to be used as a useful intervention method for stroke rehabilitation.
In this paper, we propose stable walking algorithm using ZMP for the biped robot in the slope-way. At first, we define discrete state variables that classified stable area and unstable area by center of mass from ZMP during slope-way walking. For the stable walking gait, the discrete state controller for determining the high-level and low-level decision making are designed. The high-level decision making is composed of the discrete state variables; left foot support phase, right foot support phase, flat-way, and slope-way. Then the continuous state controller is implemented for the low-level decision making using ZMP.
PURPOSE: This study is to examine the effects of different types of tasks on gait functions of chronic stroke patients when different types of dual tasks were applied while the patients were implementing practical and continuous circuit tasks using their upper and lower extremities circulating many workbenches. METHODS: Forty-four chronic stroke patients were divided into a dual motor circuit task training group, a dual cognitive circuit task training group and a simple task training group. Before training, all the patients were identically encouraged to receive conservative physical therapy for 30 minutes by a physical therapist were thereafter made to train for 30 minutes, five times a week for a total of eight weeks with individual additional tasks. The dual motor circuit task training consisted of continuous circuit training motor tasks and additional motor tasks and the dual cognitive circuit task training consisted of tasks combining the same circuit training motor tasks and additional cognitive tasks. The simple task training consisted of natural walks on a flat terrain to the front, rear and lateral sides of the terrain. Changes in functional gait abilities made through the training were evaluated using GAITRite. SPSS Win 12.0 was used for the data analysis. RESULTS: As for the gait variables that showed significant differences in comparison between the groups over the training period, the dual motor circuit task training group showed more significant differences than the dual cognitive circuit task training group and the simple task training group at 4 weeks and 8 weeks of training(p<.05). CONCLUSION: Therefore, it could be seen that the practical and continuous dual circuit task training was more effective than simple task training on gait. In comparison between the types of dual tasks, the dual motor circuit task training group showed more effects than the dual cognitive circuit task training group.
