  • Adsorption of melamine was examined using columns packed with granular activated carbon (GAC). Raw GAC was sieved with 20, 40, 60 and 80 mesh to determine the influence of adsorbent particle size on reaction and diffusion. The mass ratio of the adsorption capacity of GAC for melamine ranged from 9.19 to 11.06%, and adsorption rates increased with decreasing particle size within this range. Rate constants between 3.295 ~ 4.799 $min^{-1}$ were obtained using a pseudofirst-order equation that was used to determine adsorption kinetics. A surface diffusion model was adapted to take into account the unsteady-state equation of a spherical adsorbent by converting the surface concentration from a constant to a variable governed by a dispersion equation. The calculated values were fit with the experimental results by using the diffusion coefficients as regression parameters. The modified equation exhibited a more precise agreement with respect to the sum of the absolute error (SAE).

  • Ethanolamine (ETA) is widely used for alkalinization of water in steam cycles of nuclear power plants with pressurized water reactor. When ETA contained wastewater was released, it could increase COD and T-N. The treatment of the COD and T-N from ETA wastewater was investigated using the GAC as particle electrodes in three-dimensional electrode reactor (TDE). This study evaluated the effectiveness of GAC as particle electrode using different packing ratio at 300 V. The results showed that GAC-TDE could reduce ETA much more efficiently than ZVI-TDE at the mass ratio of GAC to insulator, 1:2. Additionally, The effect of applied electric potential to COD and T-N reduction was investigated. The results showed the high COD, T-N reduction and current efficiency at the low electric potential. Using the GAC-TDE will provide a better ETA reduction with reducing electrical potential dissipation.

  • Recently, the production of taste and odor (T&O) compounds is a common problem in water industry. Geosmin is one of the T&O components in drinking water. However, geosmin is hardly eliminated through the conventional water treatment systems. Among various advanced processes capable of removing geosmin, adsorption process using granular activated carbon (GAC) is the most commonly used process. As time passes, however GAC process changes into biological activated carbon (BAC) process. There is little information on the BAC process in the literature. In this study, we isolated and identified microorganisms existing within various BAC processes. The microbial concentrations of BAC processes examined were $3.5{\times}10^5$ colony forming units (CFU/g), $2.2{\times}10^6CFU/g$ and $7.0{\times}10^5CFU/g$ in the Seongnam plant, Goyang plant and Goryeong pilot plant, respectively. The dominant bacterial species were found to be Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Novosphingobium rosa and Afipia broomeae in each plants. Removal efficiencies of $3{\mu}g/L$ geosmin by the dominant species were 36.1%, 36.5% and 34.3% in mineral salts medium(MSM) where geosmin was a sole carbon source.

  • The removal of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) by activated carbon was investigated by using granular activated carbon (GAC) tests and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The GAC absorption tests show the removal efficiency of 68.4~90.7% and 99.0~99.9% in 1 and 24 hours, respectively. In both GAC tests, the removal efficiency of sulfamethazine (SMZ) was the highest followed by those of sulfathiazole (STZ) and sulfamethoxazole (SMTZ): SMZ > STZ > SMTZ. In DFT adsorption simulations, we found that the 4-aminobenzenesulfonamide parts of SMZ and STZ and the 3-methyl-1,2-oxazol-5-amine part of SMTZ are preferentially adsorbed on the edges of graphene model, provided that the adsorbates keep their structures without dissociation upon adsorption process. The adsorption energies of SMZ, STZ, and SMTZ are -4.91, -4.64, and -4.62 eV, respectively. This adsorption strength (SMZ > STZ > STMZ) agrees with the trend of the removal efficiency of SAs by GAC. In addition, dissociative adsorption configurations of SAs are discussed.

  • For a cosmetic plant wastewater containing surfactants of high concentration, adsorption treatment by granular activated carbon(GAC) having different pore size distribution was studied. Three sorts GACs were used and regenerated afterwards with methanol. Experiments were composed of batch process and column test for both virgin and regenerated GACs. Following conclusions were drawn from the study: Methylene blue activating substance(MBAS) adsorption data from the batch tests for three GACs are described well by BET isotherm and Freundich isotherm. Simulation with the BET isotherm shows that maximum adsorption appears to be affected not only by specific surface area but also by pore size distribution. Maximum adsorption from the BET isotherm for MBAS appears to diminish as the number of reactivation increases. The diminishing ratio of maximum adsorption appears to decrease as the pore size decreases. Recovery ratio of the methanol by vacuum evaporation from the spent methanol ranges from 95% to 97%.

  • One of the Musty and earthy smell compounds in raw water is generally attributed to 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB). It is well known that activated carbon and oxidants such as $O_3$, Cl $O_2$, are effective ways to control 2-MIB. In isotherm equilibrium experiments, 2-MIB in distilled water was much more adsorbed to the activated carbon(A/C) than raw water containing dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The Freundlich constants(k) of distilled water and raw water were 3.36 and 0.049, and 1/n values were 0.80 and 0.42, respectively. The 2-MIB residual rate were Y = $e^{-0}$.55x/~ $e^{-0}$.54x/ with Ozone( $O_3$) dose by 5 minutes contact time at the 241 and 353 ng/L initial concentrations. The 2-MIB residual rate were Y = $e^{-0}$.32x/~ $e^{-0}$.35x/ with Chlorine dioxide(Cl $O_2$) dose by 15 minutes contact time at the 89 and 249 ng/L initial concentrations. 2-MIB was decreased from 1911 ng/L to 569ng/L by post-ozonation(70%removal efficiency) and removal efficiencies of 2-MIB by the following 4 kinds Granular Activated Carbon(GAC) process such as coal base, coconut base, wood base and zeolite+carbon base were 95.8, 89.5, 88.4, and 93.7% respectively.ely.

  • This research was performed by means of several different virgin granular activated carbons (GAC) made of each coal, coconut and wood, and the GACs were investigated for an adsorption performance of bromate in a continuous adsorption column. Breakthrough behavior was investigated that the breakthrough points of the virgin two coals-, coconut- and wood-based GACs were observed as 9252 bed volume (BV), 6821 BV, 5291 BV and 2431 BV, respectively. The experimental results of adsorption capacity (X/M) for bromate showed that two coal- based GACs were highest (1334.5 and 798.2 ${\mu}g$/g), the coconut-based GAC was intermediate (668.6 ${\mu}g$/g) and the wood-based GAC was lowest (156.8 ${\mu}g$/g). The X/M of the coal-based GACs was 2~8.5 times higher than the X/M of the coconut-based and wood-based GACs. The results of carbon usage rates (CURs) for the virgin two coal-, coconut- and wood-based GACs were shown as 0.19, 0.25, 0.33 and 0.71 g/day respectively. The adsorption capacity, k values, were also investigated by means of the GACs for bromate. The k values of two coal-, coconut- and wood- based GACs for bromate were found to be 121.3, 76.7, 43.3 and 14.6 respectively. This results suggested that using the virgin GAC made of coal was the best selection for removal of bromate in the water treatment for an advanced treatment.

  • Adsorption performance of tetracycline antibiotic compounds such as tetracycline(TC), oxytetracycline(OTC), chlortetracycline (CTC) and minocycline(MNC) on granular activated carbon(GAC) was evaluated in this study. The coal-based activated carbon was found to be more effective than other carbons in adsorption of tetracycline antibiotic compounds. The wood-based activated carbon was less effective than coconut- and coal-based carbon in adsorption nevertheless having larger pore volume and specific surface area than others carbons. The maximum adsorption capacities(X/M) of coal-based activated carbon for the four tetracycline species was 1.27$\sim$1.36 and 1.69$\sim$1.84 times larger than coconut- and wood-based activated carbon, respectively. Carbon usage rates(CUR) of coal-, coconut- and wood-based activated carbons for tetracycline(TC) were 2.96 g/day, 3.40 g/day and 4.53 g/day, respectively. Similar results were obtained in the adsorption of the rest three tetracycline species. It is concluded that coal-based activated carbon could removed the tetracycline antibiotic compounds better than other material-based activated carbons.

  • Wastewater including ethanolamine used in the second generation of nuclear power plants is filtered out in the ion exchange resin of the condensate polishing plant. In the regeneration process of ion exchange resin, a strong acidic wastewater containing ethanolamine and a lager amount of ionic substances are released. In this study, the process involving UV oxidation part with or without absorbents was developed for treating wastewater released from the ionic exchange resin. The effect of adsorbents on the wastewater treatment was investigated by using UV oxidation system developed by us. As a result, the COD removal efficiency of UV/GAC process with the granular activated carbon (GAC) as an adsorbent was 71.3% at pH 12.8. The removal efficiency was 21.8% higher than that of the wastewater treated using UV oxidation process without any adsorbents at the same condition. The removal of T-N was 88.6% at pH 12.8 when using UV oxidation with the GAC absorbent, which was 18.0% higher than that of using the UV oxidation process without any absorbents. It is thought that ethanolamine adsorbed on the absorbent improved the efficiency of UV oxidation process. Therefore, the UV/GAC adsorption oxidation process can be more effective in treating wastewater containing ethanolamine than that of using the process without any absorbents.

  • The adsorption of Acid Fuchsin (AF) on granular activated carbon (GAC) was investigated for isothermal adsorption and kinetics and thermodynamic parameters by experimenting with the initial concentration, contact time, temperature, and pH of the dye as adsorption parameters. In the pH effect experiment, the adsorption of AF on activated carbon showed a bathtub type with increased adsorption at pH 3 and 11. The adsorption equilibrium data of AF fit well with the Freundlich isotherm model, and the calculated separation factor (1/n) value was found in which activated carbon can effectively remove AF. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model fits well within 7.88% of the error percent in the adsorption process. According to Weber and Morris's model plot, it was divided into two straight lines. The intraparticle diffusion rate was slow because the stage 2 (intraparticle diffusion) slope was smaller than that of stage 1 (boundary layer diffusion). Therefore, it was confirmed that the intraparticle diffusion was a rate-controlling step. The activation energy of AF (13.00 kJ mol-1) corresponded to the physical adsorption process (5 - 40 kJ mol-1). The free energy change of the AF adsorption by activated carbon showed negative values at 298-318 K. As the spontaneity increased with increasing temperature. The adsorption of AF was an endothermic reaction (ΔH = 22.65 kJ mol-1).
