  • The chemical components of radish buds were investigated during the growth stage. The vitamin C and total phenol contents were lowered after 4 days of early sprout growth, and were 22.19 and 4.99 mg%, respectively. These increased according to the growth time, showing the highest value on day 8, 25.85 and 17.87 mg%, respectively. However, these values decreased around day 12, which seemed to be the bud end point. The major free sugar component of the radish buds was glucose, showinged the highest content on day 8. The total organic acid content gradually increased as the growth proceeded. The detected oxalic acid content was only small on day 8. During the early growth stage, the total and essential amino acids contents were 3,020∼3,575 and 1,206∼1,499 mg, respectively. These contents tended to decrease with growth time. Glutamic acid, aspartic acid and alanine were the major amino acid components (39%).

  • In this study, the food intake, feces and urine of the 7 high school boys were collected and the intake and excretion of protein and calcium were measured. The boys were 16 to 18 years old and the measurement was conducted for four weeks during which they maintained their normal living pattern and body weight. Each boy's daily intake and excretion of protein and calcium were measured and digestibility and balance were also studied. 1)Daily mean intake, fecal loss and apparent digestibility of protein of each boy were 73, 9$\pm$1.9g, 10.9$\pm$0.4g and 84.9$\pm$0.5%, respectively. The urinary loss of nitrogen was 8.76$\pm$0.22g and showed the positive balance of 1.33$\pm$0.28g. 2) Daily mean intake, fecal loss and apparent digestibility of calcium of each boy were 515.3$\pm$19.3mg, 221.6$\pm$14.1mg and 57.1 $\pm$2.7% respectively. The urinary loss of calcium was 102.6$\pm$8.4mg and showed the positive balance of 192.4$\pm$19.5mg.

  • Marine algal flora and community structure were investigated seasonally at three sites in subtidal zone of Wangdol-cho on the east coast of Korea from May 2012 to August 2013. A total of 122 species were collected and identified, including 12 green algae, 29 brown algae, and 81 red algae. Of these, 38 species were found throughout the survey period. Average seaweed biomass was 472.19-1,198.77 g wet wt. $m^{-2}$ in spring, 68.99-631.14 g wet wt. $m^{-2}$ in summer, 200.91-401.20 g wet wt. $m^{-2}$ in autumn, and 53.61-922.32 g wet wt. $m^{-2}$ in winter. The vertical distribution based on biomass were Grateloupia lanceolata, Acrosorium venulosum, Lomentaria catenata - Undaria pinnatifida, Dictyopteris pacifica, Sargassum horneri, Ecklonia cava - Desmarestia viridis, E. cava, S. horneri from upper to lower subtidal zone. The flora was classified into six functional groups: filamentous form (34.43%), coarsely branched form (25.41%), sheet form (24.59%), thick leather form (9.71%), crustose form (5.74%) and jointed calcareous form (0.82%). The C/P, R/P and (R+C)/P values reflecting the flora characteristics were 0.41, 2.79 and 3.21, respectively. Also, diversity index (H') and dominance index (DI) indicate that the algal community and environmental condition of Wangdol-cho is stable. We recommend that Wangdol-cho subtidal zone should be more protected from human activities such as turbulence and eutrophication in order to maintain species diversity and abundance of algae.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the physiological activities of Cnidium officinale Makino extracts on extraction solvents. The yield of ethanol extract, 87.54%, was higher than that of the hot water extract(83.06%) and of the methanol extract(78.32%). In the inhibitory activity of xanthine oxidase, the ethanol extracts and methanol from Cnidium officinale Makino appeared to show significantly higher activity than hot water extract at $1,000{\mu}g/mL$. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of the ethanol and the methanol extracts at $50-2,000{\mu}g/mL$ were 19.96-89.01% and 19.41-88.21%, respectively. The SOD-like activities of all the extracts improved with an increase in the treatment concentration. Both collagenase and elastase inhibitory activities were shown higher from the ethanol and methanol extract compared to that of hot water extract. The tyrosinase inhibitory activity of ethanol extract, 12.04-73.85%($50-2,000{\mu}g/mL$), was higher than that of the other extracts. Taken together, these data suggest that Cnidium officinale Makino extract is effective in whitening and anti-wrinkle effect, thus it might strongly be considered as potential functional cosmetic components.

  • The complete nucleotide sequences of the genomic RNAs of Soybean mosaic virus strains GS (SMV-G5) and G7H (SMV-G7H) were determined and compared with sequences of other SMV strains. Each viral RNA was determined to be 9588 nucleotides in length excluding the poly (A) tail and contained an open reading frame to encode a polyprotein subsequently processed into up to ten proteins by proteolytic cleavage. Com-parison of the amino acid sequences with those of other SMV strains showed high percentage of amino acid sequence homology with the same genome organization. The nucleotide and the deduced amino acid sequences between SMV-G5 and SMV-G7H were greater than 99% identity. When compared with those of other SMV strains in a phylogenetic analysis of the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences, they formed a distinct virus clade showing over 97% amino acid identity, but were more distantly related to the other potyvirus (44.1-69.6% identity). Interestingly, SMV G7H strain caused a severe mosaic or necrosis symptom in soybean cultivars including Jinpum-1, Jinpum-2, and Sodam, whereas, no symptom was observed in SMV-G5 inoculation. Complete nucleotide sequences of these strains will give clues for determining symptom determinant(s) in future research.
