Quercus mongolica is the most common hardwood species distributed in Korea. This study was conducted to investigate the biomass and energy content of the belowground biomass of Q. mongolica and to obtain the regression equation for estimating root biomass using the tree height and diameter at breast height (DBH). A total of 18 sample trees ranging 20 to 60 year-old were selected in the study sites. Tree height, DBH, age, and weight of stemwood, sapwood, heartwood, stembark, branch, leaf, and root were measured for total biomass. The highly positive correlation was shown between the biomass of most of variables of aboveground components and root biomass. The regression equation of the aboveground total biomass was $log\;W_A\;=\;1.469\;+\;0.992\;log\;D^2H\;(R^2 =0.99)$. The regression equation of the belowground biomass was $log\;W_R\;=\;1.527\;+\;0.808\;log\;D^2H\;(R^2\;=\;0.97)$. The mean energy contents of sapwood, heartwood, bark, leaf, and root were 19,594 J/g DW, 19,571 J/g DW, 19,999 J/g DW, 20,664 J/g DW, and 19,273 J/g DW, respectively. The results obtained from this study can be used to estimate biomass and energy content of belowground using easily measurable variables such as DBH and tree height ranging from 20 to 60-year-old Q. mongolica stands.
The control effects of four systemic insecticides $Disyston^{(R)}$ (disulfoton) 5G, $Temik^{(R)}$ (aldicarb) 15G, $Ortran^{(R)}$ (acephate) 5G and $Curaterr^{(R)}$ (carbofuran) 3G, on small brown planthopper, Laodetphax striatellus (fallen), were studied by applying them in the furrow of spring barley field. Two different application times; April 19 and 25, and three different dosage rates were used. The results are as follows: 1. No significant difference in the mortalities among the developmental stages were observed with the treated barley on April 25, when various life stages had infested on the cutting of the treated barley in the laboratory. The residual periods were 19 days for Disyston and 31 days for Temik. 2. With field experiments, highly effective control effects were obtained with Disyston and Temik. The residual period was longer with the treatment on April 19 than with those on April 25 for Disyston, while they were reverse for Temik. 3. The effective doses were 2kg/10a for Disyston, while the effectiveness lasted more than 40days with dose of 1kg/10a for Temik. 4. From above results, Disyston and Temik could effectively reduce the population of small brown planthopper in the barley field, which is the effective reproductive sources of the population in the rice field.
We have compared and investigated the detection capabilities of antibody of immunoglobulin G(anti-IgG) immobilized by protein G and N-hydroxysuccinimide(NHS) at the end of the self-assembled monolayer(SAM). Surface plasmon resonance(SPR) sensor has been utilized to measure the interaction between biomolecules. After formation of the protein G and SAM, anti-IgG, bovine serum albumin(BSA) and IgG has been sequently injected. Through the reponse of the SPR, we can conclude that the protein G immobilized anti-IgG better than the SAM. In addition, IgG detection capability of the anti-IgG immobilized by the protein G showed better performance compared with that immobilized by the SAM.
In this study, the characteristics of the lactic fermentation of gamju manufactured using a medicinal herb decoction were assessed. A bacterial strain, LAB19, which is used for the induction of lactic fermentation into gamju, was isolated from dried persimmon and identified as Leuconostoc mesenteroides on the basis of morphological, physiological, and chemotaxonomical features, and 16S rRNA sequencing analysis. After 60 hours of lactic fermentation with Leuconostoc mesenteroides LAB19 at $25^{\circ}C$, the gamju was determined to contain 141.3 g/L of reducing sugar, 5.33 g/L of acids, and 1.19 g/L of soluble phenolics. Approximately 90% of reducing sugar and 58% of acids were maltose and lactic acid, respectively. Free radical scavenging activities were retained at levels between 76.6 to 75.7% during the lactic fermentation of gamju.
Seed production of the cherry salmon, Oncorhynchus masou (Brevoort) were studied in terms of egg development, hatching rate, juvenile growth, smolt duration, smolt rate, and adult growth rates. Fork length and body weight of $0^+$ juvenile were $9.32{\pm}1.19\;cm$ and $9.36{\pm}3.50\;g$ for females and $9.07{\pm}1.02\;cm$ and $8.57{\pm}3.04\;g$ for males, respectively. Body weights of $1^+$ smolt were $84.09{\pm}18.1\;g$ and $86.33{\pm}41.2\;g$ for females and males, while body weights of $1^+$ parr were $101.88{\pm}60.9\;g$ and $98.38{\pm}39.6\;g$ for females and males, respectively. Monitoring of gonadosomatic index (GSI) confirmed that maturations of both sexes were not synchronous; males achieved highest GSI in September, while females achieved it in October.
H19 is an imprinted oncofetal gene, and loss of imprinting at the H19 locus results in over-expression of H19 in cancers. Aflatoxin B1(AFB1) is regarded as one of the most dangerous carcinogens. Exposure to AFB1 would most easily increase susceptibility to diseases such as hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) but any possible relationship between AFB1 and H19 is not clear. In present study, we found that AFB1 could up-regulate the expression of H19 and promote cell growth and invasion by hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells. Knocking down H19 RNA co ld reverse the effects of AFB1 on cell growth and invasion. In addition, AFB1 induced the expression of E2F1 and its knock-down could down-regulate H19 expression and suppress cell growth and invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells. Furthermore, E2F1 over-expression could up-regulate H19 expression and promote cell growth and invasion, with binding to the H19 promoter being demonstrated by chromatin immunoprecipitation assays (ChIP). In summary, our results suggested that aflatoxin B1could promote cell growth and invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells through actions on H19 and E2F1.

The authors investigated estimated amounts of salt intake of workers in manufacturing industries who consisted of 1,506 males in 6 manufacturing fields and 476 females in 3 fields in Pusan area using filter paper method which was developed recently. The obtained results were as follows; 1. Mean excretion amounts of urinary electrolytes were Na 200.7 mEq/l, K 44.2 mEq/l and Cr 1.12g/l in male and Na 190.2 mEq/l, K 44.0 mEq/l and Cr 1.10g/1 in female. 2. Mean daily salt intake amounts were 19.4g in male and l5.3g in female. 3. By the fields of manufacturing industries in male, workers in metal product field had the highest salt intake as 20.0g, and the following were workers in food and tobacco field as 19.7g, workers in textile, wearing apparel and leather field as 19.6g in order. 4. In female, workers in textile, wearing apparel and leather field had the highest salt intake as l5.7g and the next were workers in chemical, coal and rubber products field as l5.0g and workers in fabricated metal products, machinery and equipments as l4.3g, respectively.
The biodegradable oil absorption resin was prepared by the suspension polymerization of the modified starch and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA). The highest oil-absorption capacity of B-PEHA prepared showed at the condition of the modified starch content of 10 g and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) of 0.133 wt%. Its maximum oil absorption capacity per g of oil absorber was chloroform 30.88 g, toluene 19.75 g, xylene 18.78 g, tetrahydofuran (THF) 15.96 g, octane 11.43 g, hexane 9.5 g diesel oil 12.80 g, and kerosene 13.79 g, respectively. The biodegradation of poly-2-ethylhexylacrylate (B-PEHA) determined by enzymatic hydrolysis showed approximately 17~20%. The results showed that the preparation of the biodegradable oil absorption resin is available using the modified starch.
Detection of exon 19 deletion mutation in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene, which results in increased and sustained phosphorylation of EGFR, is important for diagnosis and treatment guidelines in non-small-cell lung cancer. Here, we have developed a simple and convenient detection system using the interaction between G-quadruplex and fluorophore thioflavin T (ThT) for discriminating EGFR exon 19 deletion mutant DNA from wild type without a label and quencher. In the presence of exon 19 deletion mutant DNA, the probe DNAs annealed to the target sequences were transformed into G-quadruplex structure. Subsequent intercalation of ThT into the G-quadruplex resulted in a light-up fluorescence signal, which reflects the amount of mutant DNA. Due to stark differences in fluorescence intensity between mutant and wild-type DNA, we suggest that the induced G-quadruplex structure in the probe DNA can report the presence of cancer-causing deletion mutant DNAs with high sensitivity.
