Choline chloride-Glycerol (1:2 mol) as draw solution in forward osmosis for dewatering purpose

  • Choline chloride-glycerol (1:2 mol), a natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) is examined as a draw solution in forward osmosis (FO) for dewatering application. The NADES is easy to prepare, low in toxicity and environmentally benign. A polyamide thin film composite membrane was used. Characterization of the membrane confirmed porous membrane structure with good hydrophilicity and a low structural parameter (722 ㎛) suitable for FO application. A dilute solution of 20% (v/v) NADES was enough to generate moderate water flux (14.98 L m-2h-1) with relatively low reverse solute flux (0.125 g m-2h-1) with deionized water feed. Application in dewatering industrial wastewater feed showed reasonably good water flux (11.9 L m-2h-1) which could be maintained by controlling the external concentration polarization and fouling/scaling mitigation via simple periodic deionized water wash. In another application, clarified sugarcane juice could be successfully concentrated. Recovery of the draw solute was accomplished easily by chilling utilizing thermo responsive phase transition property of NADES. This study established that low concentration NADES can be a viable alternative as a draw solute for dewatering of wastewater and other heat sensitive applications along with a simple recovery process.

The Study on Frequently Consumed Food Items from 1993 Korean National Nutrition Survey(II) -Amounts and Frequency of Dishes Intakes- (국민영양조사를 이용한 우리나라 다소비 식품의 섭취량에 관한 연구(II) -음식의 섭취량 조사 분석-)

  • The purpose of the present study is to collect information in terms of the frequency and amounts in frequently consumed dishes. We conducted the secondary analysis from '93 Korean National Survey. Mainly informations about 2-day food records were used to investigate dish intakes and to compare different food patterns by area. Amounts of total daily intakes of dishes per capita are 1,741.46g in nationwide, 1,722.03g in large city, 1,712.46g in small city, 1,808.73g in rural. The dish consumed in largest quantities per capita per day is the rice which amounts is 481.67g, 27.66% of total intake. Fruits and cabbage were consumed in large quantities too. Kimchi made of cabbage have the highest number of frequencies. Number of frequencies in rice, fruits, and milk showed high, too. Dish groups are classified by the cooking method. Some dishes in several dish groups have small number of frequencies and small amount of quantities. Some dishes in the top list are not included in the 30 dishes list. There should be some studies about validity and reliability of the dish list, using individual dietary assessment methods.

The First Formant Characteristics in Vocalize of One Soprano (소프라노 1인의 모음곡 발성 시 제 1 포먼트의 변화양상)

  • Background and Objectives : Vowels are characterized on the basis of formant patterns. The first formant(F1) is determined by high-low placement of the tongue, and the second formant (F2) by front-back placement of the tongue. The fundamental frequency(F0) of a soprano often exceed the normal frequency of the first formant. And the vocal intensity is boosted when F0 is high and a harmonic coincides with a formant. This is called a formant tuning. Experienced singers thus learned how to tune their formants over a resonable range by lowering the tongue to maximize their vocal intensity. So, the current study aimed to identify the formant tuning in one experienced soprano by comparing the first formants of vowel [i] in three different voice production : speech, ascending scale, and vocalize. Materials and Method : All voices recordings of vowel [i] in speech, ascending scale (from F4 note to A4 note), and vocalize(:Ridente la calam") were made with digital audio tape-corder in a sound treated room. And the captured data were analyzed by the long term average(LTA) power spectrum using the FFT algorithm of the Computerized Speech Lab(CSL, Kay elementrics, Model, 4300B). Results : Although the first formant of vowel [i] in speech was 238Hz, those of ascending scale [i] were 377Hz, 405Hz, 453Hz respectively in F4(349z), G4(392Hz), A4(440Hz) note, and 722Hz, 820Hz, 918Hz respectively in F5 (698Hz), G5(784Hz), A5(880Hz) note. In vocalize, first formants of [i] were 380Hz, 398Hz, 453Hz respectively in F4, G4, A4 note, and 720Hz, 821Hz, 890Hz respectively in F5, G5, A5 note. Conclusion : These results showed that the first formant of ascending scale and vocalize sustained higher frequency than fundamental frequency in high pitch. This finding implicates that the formant tuning of vowel [i] in ascending scale was also noted in vocalize.

Studies on the Nutritional Composition and Storage Stability of Weaning Food Manufactured in Korea (시판 초기 이유식의 영양성분 및 저장 안정성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was attempted to analyze nutritional composition and nutritional balance of domestic and affiliated company of foreign group weaning food. The results were as follows: The proximate compositions were 61%∼70% carbohydrate, 14%∼16% protein, 2.5%∼3.2% ash and 8%∼15% lipid. Leucine content was the highest among all essential amino acids in all test weaning foods. The P/S and linoleic acid / linolenic acid ratio of domestic weaning foods were higher than those of affiliated company of foreign group weaning food. The peroxide values of H, M, S and N product were 13.9 meq/kg oil, 1.1 meq/kg oil, 5.4 meq/kg oil and 14.8 meq/kg oil, respectively.

Incidence of congenital hypothyroidism by gestational age: a retrospective observational study

  • Background: Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is the leading cause of preventable physical and intellectual disabilities. This study aimed to assess the incidence and clinical characteristics of CH in newborns. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all newborns delivered at the Pusan National University Hospital between January 2011 and March 2021. The incidence of CH was compared according to gestational age, birth weight, and small for gestational age (SGA). The patients aged ≥3 years who could not maintain normal thyroid function and required levothyroxine treatment were diagnosed with permanent CH. Logistic regression analysis was performed to compare CH risks. Results: Of 3,722 newborns, 40 were diagnosed with CH (1.07%). Gestational age and birth weight were significantly associated with CH incidence. The odds ratios (ORs) of CH in infants delivered at 32-37, 28-31, and <28 weeks were 2.568 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.141-5.778), 5.917 (95% CI, 2.264-15.464), and 7.441 (95% CI, 2.617-21.159) times higher, respectively, than those delivered at term. The ORs of CH in infants weighing 1,500-2,499 g, 1,000-1,499 g, and <1,000 g were 4.664 (95% CI, 1.928-11.279), 11.076 (95% CI, 4.089-29.999), and 12.544 (95% CI, 4.350-36.176) times greater, respectively, than those in infants weighing ≥2,500 g. The OR of CH was 6.795 (95% CI, 3.553-13.692) times greater in SGA than in non-SGA infants. Conclusion: The CH incidence in South Korea has increased significantly compared with that in the past. Gestational age, birth weight, and SGA were significantly associated with CH incidence.

The Patterns of Oxygen Consumption In Six Species of Marine Fish (해산어류 6종의 산소소비 경향에 관한 연구)

  • Oxygen consumption of marine fishes according to different water temperatures, fish population densities and body weights was measured in the respiratory chamber for the following six species: the olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, the tiger puffer Takifugu rubripes, the rockfish Sebastes schlegeli, the sea bass Lateolabrax Japonicus, the red seabream Pagrus major and the black seabream Acanthopagrus schlegeli. Also the lethal concentration of dissolved oxygen in them was determined. Oxygen consumption in each fish species increased as the water temperature increased. The relationship between the oxygen consumption rate $(Oc,\;ml/kg{\cdot}\;hr)$ and the water temperature (T,$^{\circ}C$) for each species appeared as the following equations demonstrate; olive flounder: Oc=34.0515T-339.5987 $(r^2=0.9730)$, tiger puffer: Oc=34.4941T-479.8732 $(r^2=0.9483),$ rockfish: Oc=44.7970T-634.2627 $(r^2=0.9718),$ sea bass: Oc=26.1488T-318.0633 $(r^2=0.9316),$ red seabream: Oc=61.1020T-722.8926 $(r^2= 0.9805),$ black seabream: Oc=75.1460T-947.9370 $(r^2=0.9392).$ The of gen consumption of fish with different population densities decreased as the number of fish increased. As the body weight of the olive flounder increased, the mass-specific oxygen consumption decreased. The relationship between oxygen consumption and body weight (W; g) was expressed as Oc=2532.0268W-0.6565 $(r^2=0.9229)$. The levels of lethal dissolved oxygen in the olive flounder, rockfish, tiger puffer and red seabream were 0.66, 0.79, 0.75 and 1.36 m1/1, respectively.

The Antioxidant Effect of Hot Water Extract from the Dried Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) with Pressurized Roasting (가압볶음 무말랭이 열수 추출물의 항산화 효과)

  • The antiradical property of hot water extract from dried radish (DR) or dried radish roasted with pressure (DRRP) was investigated in vitro and in LLC-PK1 cell system. The contents of total free amino acid and reducing sugar in DR were decreased by 72.86% and 3.17%, respectively, after pressurized roasting. In vitro test, $IC_{50}$ for DR and DRRP for DPPH radical scavenging activity were 646.70 and $135.45\;{\mu}g/mL$, 896.10 and $566.98\;{\mu}g/mL$ for superoxide anion radical, and 722.26 and $531.84\;{\mu}g/mL$ for hydroxy radical, respectively. The radical scavenging effects of DRRP was significantly greater than those for DR (p<0.001). These radical scavenging effects of DR and DRRP were confirmed in LLC-$PK_1$ at which oxidative stresses were induced by superoxide, nitric oxide and peroxynitrite generated in the treatment of pyrogallol, SNP, and SIN-1, respectively. Cell viability was increased in the presence of DR or DRRP, dose dependently (p<0.05), and TBARS formation was decreased. The protective effects of DRRP against oxidative damage in LLC-$PK_1$ were greater than those of DR at the same concentration tested (p<0.05). This superior antiradical activity of DRRP might be due to the products produced during the pressurized roasting in addition to the antioxidative compounds originally present in the radish. 5-hydroxyl methyl furfural (5-HMF) known as an intermediate product of the maillard reaction was detected in DRRP (0.57 mg/g), but not from DR. In conclusion, daily consumption of DRRP may prevent oxidative damage by retarding oxidative stress.

A Study on Young Antler Kimchi (녹용김치에 관한 연구)

  • Kimchi made with the addition of 2 percent of boiled young antler, raw young antler, young antler treated with lactic acid(acid treated young antler) has been fermented for 15 days at 11$^{\circ}C$. After 15 days of fermentation, the results show that pH of boiled young antler Kimchi was 3.87, that of raw young antler Kimchi was 4.04, acid treated young antler Kimchi was 3.97, control Kimchi was 3.86, and acidity of boiled young antler Kimchi was 7.4, that of raw young antler Kimchi was 10.5, that of acid treated young antler Kimchi was 10.7, control Kimchi was 6.9, respectively. After 15 days, total sugar content was 1.46% in boiled young antler Kimchi, 0.53% in raw young antler Kimchi, 0.92% in acid treated young antler Kimchi, 1.46% in control Kimchi, and reducing sugar was 0.50% in boiled young antler Kimchi, 0.14% in raw young antler Kimchi, 0.39% in acid treated young antler Kimchi and control Kimchi, respectively. Amino acid content was 13.42${\mu}$㏖/$m\ell$ in boiled young antler Kimchi, 17.83${\mu}$㏖/$m\ell$ in raw young antler Kimchi, 14.48${\mu}$㏖/$m\ell$ in acid treated young antler Kimchi, 17.60${\mu}$㏖/$m\ell$ in control Kimchi, and protein was 2.101% in boiled young antler Kimchi, 1.945% in raw young antler Kimchi, 1.722% in acid treated young antler Kimchi and 2.011% in control Kimchi, respectively. Lactic acid content was 2.021% in raw young antler Kimchi, 2.004% in acid treated young antler Kimchi, 1.950% in boiled young antler Kimchi, 1.200% in control Kimchi, and succinic acid was 0.081% in boiled young antler Kimchi, 0.086% in raw young antler Kimchi, 0.078% in acid treated young antler Kimchi and 0.111% in control Kimchi, respectively. Acetic acid was 0.080% in boiled young antler Kimchi, 0.092% in raw young antler Kimchi, 0.114% in acid treated young antler Kimchi, 0.086% in control Kimchi, respectively. The number of microorganism was 1.09${\times}$ 10$\^$8//g in boiled young antler Kimchi, 1.08${\times}$10$\^$8//g in control Kimchi, 9.88${\times}$10$\^$8//g in acid treated young antler Kimchi and 6.6${\times}$ 10$\^$8//g in raw young antler Kimchi. The number of microorganism was highest in acid treated young antler Kimchi, and followed by raw young antler Kimchi, and boiled young antler Kimchi, control Kimchi, respectively. The results of test of the saltness, sour, aroma, color, texture through sensory evaluation reveal that boiled young antler Kimchi has the excellent taste, and followed by raw young antler Kimchi and control Kimchi, acid treated young antler Kimchi, respectively.

A Study on the Growth Environment and Tissue Culture of Gyrophora esculanta MIYOSHI in Korea (한국산(韓國産) 석이(石耳)의 생육환경(生育環境)과 조직배양(組織培養)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the growth of Gyrophora esculanta and to establish a method of tissue culture of the plant. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The Gyrophora esculanta was found growing mostly on the rock slopes of 722 m to 1915 min elevation on mountains in Korea. 2. Trees growing in the vicinity of the G. esculanta were mainly Quercus spp., Pinus thunbergii, Acer spp. and Lespedeza spp, Especially Quercus spp. was found growing in all of the study site. 3. The average Length of the rock slopes with G. esculanta growing on was 14 m and their aspects were mostly south. 4. The G. esculanta were found growing on rocks of Crystalline Schist, Quartz, Liparite, Granite, ete. Particularly they were mostly found on granites. The gradient of the rock slopes was in the range of 22-90 degrees. 5. The mean number of individuals of G. esculanta per one rock slope ranged from 14 at Mt. Bukhan to 70 at Mt. Jrri. Their mean diameter ranged from 1.8cm at Mt. Munsu to 4.6cm at Mt, Sokri. 6. The average percentage of G. esculanta with fruit body was 17.6%. The highest value was found at Mt. Cheonhwang (24.0%). 7. When the 100 segments of rhizoid of Gyrophora esculanta cultured in Detmer's medium supplemented with kinetine 5mg/l and 2, 4-D 3mg/l, n callus of microspore origins were induced from about 20% of the segments. As the induced n callus was transplanted on the six different types of rocks, it was observed that the juvenile G. esculanta grew best on granite and the development rate of G. esculanta on the granite was about 55%.

A 3D RVE model with periodic boundary conditions to estimate mechanical properties of composites

  • Micromechanics is a technique for the analysis of composites or heterogeneous materials which focuses on the components of the intended structure. Each one of the components can exhibit isotropic behavior, but the microstructure characteristics of the heterogeneous material result in the anisotropic behavior of the structure. In this research, the general mechanical properties of a 3D anisotropic and heterogeneous Representative Volume Element (RVE), have been determined by applying periodic boundary conditions (PBCs), using the Asymptotic Homogenization Theory (AHT) and strain energy. In order to use the homogenization theory and apply the periodic boundary conditions, the ABAQUS scripting interface (ASI) has been used along with the Python programming language. The results have been compared with those of the Homogeneous Boundary Conditions method, which leads to an overestimation of the effective mechanical properties. According to the results, applying homogenous boundary conditions results in a 33% and 13% increase in the shear moduli G23 and G12, respectively. In polymeric composites, the fibers have linear and brittle behavior, while the resin exhibits a non-linear behavior. Therefore, the nonlinear effects of resin on the mechanical properties of the composite material is studied using a user-defined subroutine in Fortran (USDFLD). The non-linear shear stress-strain behavior of unidirectional composite laminates has been obtained. Results indicate that at arbitrary constant stress as 80 MPa in-plane shear modulus, G12, experienced a 47%, 41% and 31% reduction at the fiber volume fraction of 30%, 50% and 70%, compared to the linear assumption. The results of this study are in good agreement with the analytical and experimental results available in the literature.
