The present study was undertaken to confirm whether melittin, a major constituent of whole bee venom (WBV), had the ability to produce the same nociceptive responses as those induced by WBV. In the behavioral experiment, changes in mechanical threshold, flinching behaviors and paw thickness (edema) were measured after intraplantar (i.pl.) injection of WBV (0.1 mg & 0.3 mg/paw) and melittin (0.05 mg & 0.15 mg/paw), and intrathecal (i.t.) injection of melittin $(6{\mu}g)$. Also studied were the effects of i.p. (2 mg & 4 mg/kg), i.t. $(0.2{\mu}g\;&\;0.4{\mu}g)$ or i.pl. (0.3 mg) administration of morphine on melittin-induced pain responses. I.pl. injection of melittin at half the dosage of WBV strongly reduced mechanical threshold, and increased flinchings and paw thickness to a similar extent as those induced by WBV. Melittin- and WBV-induced flinchings and changes in mechanical threshold were dose- dependent and had a rapid onset. Paw thickness increased maximally about 1 hr after melittin and WBV treatment. Time-courses of nociceptive responses induced by melittin and WBV were very similar. Melittin-induced decreases in mechanical threshold and flinchings were suppressed by i.p., i.t. or i.pl. injection of morphine. I.t. administration of melittin $(6{\mu}g)$ reduced mechanical threshold of peripheral receptive field and induced flinching behaviors, but did not cause any increase in paw thickness. In the electrophysiological study, i.pl. injection of melittin increased discharge rates of dorsal horn neurons only with C fiber inputs from the peripheral receptive field, which were almost completely blocked by topical application of lidocaine to the sciatic nerve. These findings suggest that pain behaviors induced by WBV are mediated by melittin-induced activation of C afferent fiber, that the melittin-induced pain model is a very useful model for the study of pain, and that melittin-induced nociceptive responses are sensitive to the widely used analgesics, morphine.

A steady-state controllable M/G/1 queueing model operating under the {T:Min(T,N)} policy is considered where the {T:Min(T,N)} policy is defined as the next busy period will be initiated either after T time units elapsed from the end of the previous busy period if at least one customer arrives at the system during that time period, or after T time units elapsed without a customer' arrival, the time instant when Nth customer arrives at the system or T time units elapsed with at least one customer arrives at the system whichever comes first. After deriving the necessary system characteristics including the expected number of customers in the system, the expected length of busy period and so on, the total expected cost function per unit time for the system operation is constructed to determine the optimal operating policy. To do so, the cost elements associated with such system characteristics including the customers' waiting cost in the system and the server's removal and activating cost are defined. Then, procedures to determine the optimal values of the decision variables included in the operating policy are provided based on minimizing the total expected cost function per unit time to operate the queueing system under considerations.

This study was carried out at the CWC of Chosun university for the purpose of resistance performance improvement of planing hull, and the results of the tests were confirmed cooperatively with WJFEL. G/T 100 ton class planing hull form was selected, and the improvement of hull form including appendages were performed by using some model test techniques. The model test scope comprises resistance relative tests including wave profile observation, trim and sinkage measurement and flow visualization tests at full load and trial conditions for one bare hull and for two appended hulls. The final wedge and spray strip combined with improved hull form showed about 1.0 knot speed improvement at both of full and trial conditions, and outstanding improvement for fore wave phenomena.
IC 443 is famous for its interaction with nearby molecular clouds and intense H2 emission lines in infrared. Therefore, it has been studied extensively for the understanding of molecular shocks. We observed H2 mission lines toward the shock-cloud interaction regions of IC 443, known as clumps B, C, and G. The observations were performed with the InfraRed Camera (IRC) onboard a satellite AKARI over 2.5-5.0 um, where previous space observations, e.g. Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and Spitzer, do not cover. Our AKARI observations provide spectra of sequential pure-rotational and ro-vibrational H2 emission lines. For the clumps C and G, combining with previous mid-infrared observational results, we found that the H2 level populations show a significant separation between v=0 and v=1 levels; v=1 levels are under-populated than v=0 levels, therefore, the population cannot be described by two temperature LTE model, as many people have analyzed for the shocked H2 gas. We also applied the thermal admixture model, dN(H2; T)~T^(-b) dT, with varying ortho-to-para ratios according to the temperature, to describe the level population, and obtained plausible ranges of the H2 gas density and power-law index b.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of desalinated underground seawater (named as 'magma seawater', MSW) of Jeju Island in Korea on lipid metabolism and antioxidant activity. MSW was collected from underground of Han-Dong in Jeju Island, and freely given to high fat diet (HFD)-fed C57BL/6 mice for 10 weeks. Although there were no significant differences in the body weight changes and plasma lipid levels, hepatic triglyceride levels were significantly lower in the MSW group than in the normal tap water (TW)-drunken control group. Furthermore, the activity of fatty acid synthase (FAS) was significantly decreased and carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) activity was increased in MSW group compared to TW group. Similarly, real-time PCR analysis revealed that mRNA expressions of lipogenic genes were lowered in MSW groups compared to the control group. In a morphometric observation on the liver tissue, accumulation of fats was remarkably reduced in MSW group. Meanwhile, in vitro assay, tree radical scavenging activity measured by using diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was increased in MSW group. The 2'-7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCF-DA) staining followed with fluorescent microscopy showed a low intensity of fluorescence in MSW-treated HepG2 cells, compared to TW-treated HepG2 cells, which indicated that the production of reactive oxygen species by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) in HepG2 cells was decreased by MSW treatment. The antioxidant effect of MSW on t-BHP-induced oxidative stress in HepG2 cells was supported by the increased activities of intracellular antioxidant enzymes such as catalase and glutathione reductase. From these results, we speculate that MSW has an inhibitory effect on lipogenesis in liver and might play a protective role against cell damage by t-BHP-induced oxidative stress.
This paper presents the new unified power flow controller(UPFC) load flow algorithm using UPFC transmission line constant model. The UPFC transmission line constant model represents a function of transmission line constant(G.B) UPFC's effect in power system. It can easily be incorporated in a load flow program. The algorithm is suited for monitoring the power system state as well as determining the magnitude and Phase angle of UPFC serial voltage source.
This study examined the effects of chemical blends (a combination of alum and aluminum chloride) on pH, N, and pathogens in duck litter during a six-week experiment. In total, 240 Pekin ducks (160 males and 80 females) were individually distributed into 16 pens, in a randomized experimental design consisting of four treatments and four replicate pens per treatment. Our treatments included a control, T1 (75 g alum + 75 g aluminum chloride/kg duck litter), T2 (100 g alum + 100 g aluminum chloride/kg duck litter), and T3 (150 g alum + 150 g aluminum chloride/kg duck litter). There was no difference among treatments in pH and Total N (TN) at weeks 2, 4, and 6 and weeks 1, 4, 5, and 6, respectively. However, there were significant differences in both pH and TN among treatments at weeks 1, 3, and 5 and weeks 2 and 3, respectively. Regarding pathogens, we found small differences in all treatments in Escherichia coli populations from weeks 1 to 5 and in Salmonella enterica populations from weeks 1 to 3. In conclusion, the addition of chemical blends to duck litter increased TN, which resulted in a lower litter pH, but did not significantly affect pathogen populations.
Energy, a critical input, is to be efficiently managed via waste heat recovery and energy reuse for the economic viability of a process industry. In particular, cement manufacture demands a huge quantum of energy, for the necessary reactions. Huge amounts of hot effluent gases are generated. Energy recovery from these waste gases is an area that is of contemporary research interest. Now, about 75% of total heat recovery takes place in the riser of the suspension pre-heater system. This article deals with the hydrodynamic and heat transfer aspects of riser typically used in the cement industry. An experimental apparatus was designed and fabricated with provision for the measurement of gas pressure and solid temperatures at different heights of the riser. The system studied was air - chalcopyrite taken in different particle sizes. Acceleration length ($L_A$) determined at different parametric levels was fitted to an empirical correlation: $L_A/d_t=4.91902(d_p/d_t)^{0.10058}(w_s/w_g)^{-0.11691}(u_g{\mu}_g/d_t^2g{\rho}_g)^{0.28574}({\rho}_p/{\rho}_g)^{0.42484}$. An empirical model was developed for Nusselt number as a function of Reynolds and Prandtl numbers using regression analysis: $Nu=0.40969(Re_p)^{0.99953}(Pr)^{0.03569}$.

In the Internet of Things (IoT) concept, devices communicate autonomously with applications in the Internet. A significant aspect of IoT that makes it stand apart from present-day networked devices and applications is a) the very large number of devices, produced by diverse makers and used by an even more diverse group of users; b) the applications residing and functioning in what were very private sanctums of life e.g. the car, home, and the people themselves. Since these diverse devices require high-level security, an operational model for an IoT system is required, which has built-in security. We have proposed the societal model as a simple operational model. The basic concept of the model is borrowed from human society - there will be infants, the weak and the handicapped who need to be protected by guardians. This natural security mechanism works very well for IoT networks which seem to have inherently weak security mechanisms. In this paper, we discuss the requirements of the societal model and examine its feasibility by doing a proof-of-concept implementation.
The technology of small and medium sized shipbuilding companies is lower relatively to major shipbuilding companies, and should be up-graded from the viewpoint of national economic development. In spite that hul form design is one of the most important elements with respect to shipbuilding technology, small and medium sized shipbuilding companies are incapable of developing hull form. Inorder to support technically such companies hull form development was carried out for G/T 999ton class tanker and D/W 4990ton class tanker which are the typical vessels operating in coastal area. The operating efficiency for the developed hull forms are impeoved by 30% for G/T 999ton class tanker and 24% for D/W 4990 tonclass tanker respectively. The results of hull form development including ship model test and performance analysis are presented in this paper.
