The study was conducted to investigate the effects of physical stimulus on casting day of antler, velvet antler yield, length of velvet antler in Sika deer(Cervus nippon). Eigthen(18) stags were assigned into the treatment with six(6) stags for treatment. Results revealed that at the start of the velvet antler growth, compulsorily casting both pedicles group was 15 days later at first cycle but 11-14 days earlier at the second cycle than control group(P<0.05). The yields of velvet antler in control group, casting only left pedicle group and the both pedicle group were 775g, 835g and 757g at the first cycle and 1,004g, 1,194g and 998g at the second cycle, respectively. The average length of antler in control group, casting only left pedicle group and both pedicle group were 25.8cm, 27.4cm and 31.5cm, respectively. The average length of antler of the casting only left pedicle group and that of the both pedicle group showed 1.6cm and 5.7cm in first cycle and 2.7cm and 2.4cm in second cycle longer than that of control group(P<0.05). Results of the study suggest the possibility of controlling velvet antler producing point through compulsory casting method.
A new process was developed to degrade PVA(polyvinyl alcohol) in desize wastewater. Two symbiotic bacteria of Pseudomonas strain G5Y and PW were immobilized on the media by adsorption. A natural zeolite was chosen as the best media considering cell adhesion capacity, sedimentation rate, and material cost. PVA and COD removal efficiencies of this system for synthetic wastewater were 84% and 85% at the retention time of 6 hr, when the volumetric loading rate was PVA 8g/L·day and COD 8g/L·day, and cell density was 19,775 mg/L. In case of desire wastewater, they were 78% and 72% at the retention time of 6 hr, respectively, when the volumetric loading rate was PVA 8g/L·day and COD 13.2g/L·day, and cell density was 32,899mg/L. In case of desize wastewater, PVA and COD removal efficiencies were lower than synthetic wastewater, but cell density of the desize wastewater was lower than that of the synthetic wastewater, because there were insufficiency of necessary nutrition and variety of desize materials in the desize wastewater. A pilot test was successfully performed showing 88% and 82%, PVA and COD removal efficiencies at the retention time of 24 hr, when volumetric loading rate were 4.7 PVA g/L·day and COD 6.9g/L·day, and cell density was 12,,324 mg/L.

Aloe and propolis are extensively used in folk medicine. Ethanol extracts of Aloe vera (AE), ethanol extract of propolis (PE) and waxfree extract of propolis (PW) were prepared to test antimicrobial activities against five oral microorganisms (Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis, Enteococcus hirae, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans). Antimicrobial activities were tested by serial broth dilution method and expressed by minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). The AE showed relatively weak antimicrobial activities, while both of PE and PW greatly inhibited all microorganisms tested. To investigate the antimicrobial effects of the combined extracts of aloe with propolis, the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) was determined by checkerboard assay for each strain. The combination of AE with PE or PW resulted in Synergistic effect against oral microorganisms tested (FICI=0.375) except Escherichia coli (FICI=1.0 for PE, FICI=0.75 for PW).
The seroepidemiologic studies on antral-ToxopIasma antibody titers were carried out using ELISA and indirect latex agglutination test. Among 899 sera prepared from pregnant women, 39 cases (4.3%) revealed positive reaction and 218 sera from middle school students showed 4 positive reaction (1.8%) by ELISA. By LAT (newly established by National Veterinary Research Institute, Korea), the sera of 7 pregnant women (0.8%) showed positive reaction. When 80 sera showing ≥ 1 :8 by LAT were used for comparing the results obtained from LAT and Toxotest-MT (Eikon Chemical Co., Japans, 7 cases and 8 sera were positive, respectively. All of 11 sera of proven toxoplasmosis patients showed positive reaction in both tests. Overall proportion of agreement between LAT kit and Toxotest-MT was 0.94 (K-index : 0.632, p < 0.01), and LAT was considered to be useful for the screening of toxoplasmosis.
This study was conducted to develope efficient vermicomposting using of different mixture ratios of cow manure and sawdust by feeding these to earthworm and then by studying the growth and reproductive efficiency of earthworm, and the chemical composition of worm cast and its production. The results are summarized as follows. C/N ratio of feed was $20.43{\sim}45.20$ and it increased according to the higher proportion of sawdust, and survival of earthworm was $97.6{\sim}100%$. Number of young worms were significantly higher in 30 and 40% addition of sawdust (number of 899.6 and 927.8) than number of 769 of real cow manure treatment (P<0.05). Fresh weight of young worms was $8.00{\sim}14.35g$ and it was significantly higher in 40% addition of sawdust than other treatments(P<0.05). The cast production of earthworm was showed in the tendency of becoming lower in the 40% addition of sawdust than in $10{\sim}30%$ addition of that, but digested matters were significantly higher in $10{\sim}40%$ addition of sawdust than real cow manure treatment(P<0.05).
This study examined emission characteristics of far-infrared ray, formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds and deodorization rate of particleboard prepared at different target board densities and resin content levels, using the xylem part of Broussonetia Kazinoki Sieb. The deodorization rate increased, as the target density of board and resin content increased. Emission rates of the far-infrared ray and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) were 0.892~0.899, and $0.074mg/m^2{\cdot}h$ for particleboard prepared with the resin content of 13% and target density of $0.6g/cm^3$ while the deodorization rate was 80~90% for the same particleboard. The formaldehyde emission factor ranged from $0.004mg/m^2{\cdot}h$ to $0.006mg/m^2{\cdot}h$ for all particleboard fabricated at different resin content and target densities. These results indicate that particleboard prepared from the xylem part of Broussonetia Kazinoki Sieb have a potential as a building construction material.

Intakes and excretions of zinc and copper were determined for 8 female adolescents (aged 16.4$\pm$0.5 y; body mass index 20.4$\pm$1.3kg/$m^2$; body fat 33.3$\pm$2.5%; bone mineral density of lumbar spine in L2-L4; 0.96$\pm$0.08g/$\textrm{cm}^2$) when they consumed diets basal and high in calcium for 6 days each. All subjects consumed a basal Ca diet containing 800 mg, Korean RDA level of the subjects, and a high Ca diet containing 1200mg, RDA plus 2 SDs of calcium intake. The diets provided 58% of energy intake as carbohydrate, 25% as fat, and 17% as protein. Food, urine and fecal samples were collected during the last 3 days of each feeding period and were assayed. Mean daily intakes on the basal and high calcium diets, respectively, were 6.57 and 6.37 mg for zinc and 910 and 812 $\mu\textrm{g}$for copper. Fecal excretion of copper and zinc in relation to intake was significantly greater on the high calcium than on the basal calcium diet. Hence, apparent absorption rate was significantly lowered from 98.7% on the basal calcium diet to 97.9% on the high calcium diet for zinc from 66.3% to 56.4% for copper, respectively. Urinary loss of copper was not detectable but that of zinc was 0.38mg on the basal diet and 0.47mg on the high calcium diet. Copper retention was 899$\pm$105$\mu\textrm{g}$/day on the basal calcium diet and 792$\pm$20.8$\mu\textrm{g}$/day on the high calcium diet, and zinc retention was 3.95$\pm$0.91mg/day and 3.11$\pm$0.89mg/day. Thus, copper and zinc retention was significantly decreased on the high calcium diet (p<0.05). Summarizing the results, apparent absorption and retention of zinc and copper were significantly decreased by calcium supplementation. Therefore, it is suggested that interactions among minerals should be considered in determining RDA.

The studies on the detoxification of paralytic shellfish poison (PSP)-infested blue mussels, Mytilus edulis and oyster, Crassostrea gigas were performed for using of available processing resource. Toxic blue mussel and oysters from Nampo in Masan Bay, Hachong in Koje Bay and Woepori in Koje were used for experimental samples. The toxicity of low toxic blue mussel $(A,\;84{\mu}g/100g;\;B,\;166{\mu}g/100g;\;C,\;295{\mu}g/l00g;\;D,\;557{\mu}g/100g)$ and oyster $(740{\mu}g/100g)$ were reduced below the regulation limit of PSP $(80{\mu}g/100g)$ or undetected level by mouse bioassay after boiling at $98^{\circ}C$ for 10 min and retorting at $115^{\circ}C$ for 70 min, while the toxicity of high toxic blue mussel $(E,\;8,760{\mu}g/100g)$ remained beyond the regulation limit after boiling and retorting at same condition. These results suggested that the regulation limit of PSP could be level up from $(80{\mu}g/100g)$ to about $160{\mu}g/100g$.
Collections were made monthly using beam trawl from March 2005 to February 2006 in Gujora, and from June 2006 to May 2007 in Geoje Bay to investigate the species composition of Juvenile and Immature Fishes of both coastal areas. Fishes collected in the sandy shore of Gujora were 6 orders, 14 families, 20 species, 224 individuals, and 534.9 g in total. Favonigobius gymnauchen, Trachioncephalus myops, Pseudoblennius percoides, Sagamia geneionema, Repomucenus beniteguri, and Pseudorhombus cinnamoneus were mainly collected. These 6 species accounted for 83.9% of total individuals and 47.1 % of total biomass. On the other hand, fishes collected in Geoje Bay were 4 orders, 8 families, 14 species, 1,406 individuals and 1,899.7 g in total. Acentrogobius pflaumii, Platyce phalusindicus, Chasmichthy dolichognathus, Acanthogobius flavimanus, Gymnogobius urotaenia, and Synechogobius hasta were mainly collected. These 6 species accounted for 97.7% of total individuals and 96% of total biomass. The greatest numbers and biomass of fishes were collected in summer and the lowest in winter. In Geoje Bay, the number of species and individuals reached the peak in September and August, respectively. However, both species and individual numbers were highly fluctuated in Gujora.
