  • The polyacrylonitrile (PAN) hollow fiber composite membranes were prepared and their pervaporation performance was tested to concentrate the acetic acid aqueous solution. The coating of the composite membranes were confirmed by SEM images and the coating thickness was averagely $3.85{\mu}m$. As the crosslinking agent and the crosslinking temperature increase, the permeability decreases while the separation factor increases. Typically, the permeability $250g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ and the separation factor 13 were obtained for glutaraldehyde 13 wt% as the crosslinking agent and crosslinking temperature $140^{\circ}C$. And for the use of another crosslinking agent, poly (acrylic acid) 9 wt% and crosslinking temperature $140^{\circ}C$, the permeability $330g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ and separation factor 9 were obtained.

  • Pervaporation with a membrane is one of the economic technologies for separation of liquid mixtures including organic/water mixtures. The ZSM-5 membrane was used fur pervaporation of dichloromethane, 1,2-dichloroethane and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene from their aqueous solutions since its physical property shows very hydrophobic. ZSM-5 crystals were hydrothermally grown and deposited on the inside of a porous sintered stainless steel tube by the secondary growth method. Fluxes of dichlorinated organic compounds were observed to be $50{\~}429\;g/m^2/h$ while separation factors were $15{\~}320$ depending on a mole fraction of a dichlorinated organic compound in a feed solution ranged from 0.0001 to 0.001 mole fraction and the operation temperature between $25^{\circ}C\;and\;35^{\circ}C$.

  • Porous SiC candle filter preforms were fabricated by extrusion and ramming process. To fabricate SiC candle filter preform, commercially available 85 ${\mu}m\;{\alpha}-$-SiC powder and 44 ${\mu}m$ mullite, CaC$O_3$ powder were used as the starting materials. The candle type preforms were fabricated by vacuum extrusion and ramming process, and sintered at $1400{^{\circ}C}$ 2 h in air atmosphere. The effect of forming method on porosity, density, strength (flexural and compressive strength) and microstructure was investigated. Also, corrosion test of the sintered candle filter specimens as forming method was performed at $600{^{\circ}C}$ in IGCC syngas atmosphere. The sintered SiC filter which was formed by ramming process has more higher density and exhibit higher strength than extruded filter. Its maximum density and 3-point bending strength were 2.00 g/$cm^3$ and 45 MPa, respectively.

  • Cassava constitutes an abundant substrate in tropical regions. The production of butanol in ABE fermentation by Clostridium beijerinckii BA101 using cassava flour (CF) was scaled-up to bioreactor level (5 L). Optimized fermentation conditions were applied; that is, $40^{\circ}C$, 60 g/l CF, and enzymatic pretreatment of the substrate. The batch fermentation profile presented an acidogenic phase for the first 24 h and a solventogenic phase afterwards. An average of 37.01 g/l ABE was produced after 83 h, with a productivity of 0.446 g/l/h. Butanol production was 25.71 g/l with a productivity of 0.310 g/l/h, high or similar to analogous batch processes described for other substrates. Solvent separation by different combinations of fractioned and azeotropic distillation and liquid-liquid separation were assessed to evaluate energetic and economic costs in downstream processing. Results suggest that the use of cassava as a substrate in ABE fermentation could be a cost-effective way of producing butanol in tropical regions.

  • In this study, the pervaporation separation characteristics were investigated for the iso-propyl alcohol (IPA)-water system using PDMS dense membranes. The ratio, 9:1 and 10:1, of the basic material based on RTV-655 and crosslinking agent were used to prepare dense membranes at the reaction temperatures, 40, 60, and $80^{\circ}C$. And these resulting membranes were characterized by pervaporation technique in terms of permeabilities and separation factors for the feed composition of IPA 85 wt% at the operating temperatures, 25, 35, 45, and $55^{\circ}C$. Typical results of permeabilities $148g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ at $55^{\circ}C$ for 9:1 membrane and the selectivity 17 at $55^{\circ}C$ for 10:1 membrane were obtained, respectively.

  • The porous SiO$_2$-B$_2$O$_3$ membrane was prepared from Si(OC$_2$$H_5$)$_4$-($CH_3$O)$_3$B-C$_2$$H_5$OH-$H_2O$ system by sol-gel method. In order to investigate the characteristics of this membrane, we examined that using BET, IR spectrophotometer, X-ray diffractometer, SEM and TEM. At $700^{\circ}C$, the surface area of SiO$_2$-B$_2$O$_3$ membrane was 354.398 $m^2$/, the median pore diameter was 0.0048 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and the particle size of SiO$_2$-B$_2$O$_3$ membrane was 7 nm. The separation properties of the gas mixture ($H_2$/$N_2$) through the SiO$_2$-B$_2$O$_3$ membrane was studied as a function of pressure. The real separation factor($\alpha$) of SiO$_2$-B$_2$O$_3$ membrane for $H_2$/$N_2$ gas mixture was 4.68 at 155.15 cmHg and $25^{\circ}C$. The real separation factor($\alpha$), head separation factor($\beta$) and tail separation factor((equation omitted)) were increased as the pressure of permeation cell increased.

  • A. partially decationized Y zeolite was pretreated under specific conditions. It was found this calcinated zeolite retains its separation properties for mixtures of the gases hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, and methane but has much lower affinity for water molecules than untreated, e.g., zeolites A type or X type. The observed effect is discussed on the basis of the results of adsorption measurements on the adsorption capacities, isotherms, and heats of adsorption.

  • Microporous glasses in the system TiO2-SiO2-Al2O3-B2O3-CaO-Na2O were prepared by the phase-separation technique. Morphology and distribution of pore and specific surface area of glasses heated and leached out at various conditions were investigated by SEM and Porosimeter. Crystallization of glasses heated above transition temperature was also inspected by X-ray diffraction method. When the heating temperature and time increased, the pore size and volume increased, but the specific surface area decreased above the critical temperature. The phase-separation, specific surface area and pore size showed more sensitive change on the variation of heating temperature than of heating time. The specific surface area and micropore volume of porous glasses prepared in this study were about 120-330$m^2$/g and 0.001-0.01cc/g, respectively. Mean pore size of porous glasses were about 20-90$\AA$. Anatase phases was deposited when the parent glass was heat-treated at 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 6hrs.

  • Cognitive radio (CR) is proposed as a key solution to improve spectral efficiency and overcome the spectrum scarcity. Spectrum sensing is an important task in each CR system with the aim of identifying the spectrum holes and using them for secondary user's (SU) communications. Several conventional methods for spectrum sensing have been proposed such as energy detection, matched filter detection, etc. However, the main limitation of these classical methods is that the CR network is not able to communicate with its own base station during the spectrum sensing period and thus a fraction of the available primary frame cannot be exploited for data transmission. The other limitation in conventional methods is that the SU data frames should be synchronized with the primary network data frames. To overcome the above limitations, here, we propose a spectrum sensing technique based on blind source separation (BSS) that does not need time synchronization between the primary network and the CR. Moreover, by using the proposed technique, the SU can maintain its transmission with the base station even during spectrum sensing and thus higher rates are achieved by the CR network. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method outperforms the accuracy of conventional BSS-based spectrum sensing techniques.
