  • This paper presents a top-down approach to implement an MPEG-2 audio encoder in VLSI. As the algorithm of an MPEG-2 audio encoder is heavy-weighted and heterogeneous(to be mixture of several strategies), the encoder design process is undertaken carefully from the algorithmic level to the architectural level. Firstly, the encoding algorithm is analyzed and divided into sub-algorithms, called tasks, and the tasks are partitioned in the way of reusing the same designs. Secondly, the partitioned tasks are scheduled and synthesized to make the most efficient use of time and space. In the end, a real-time 5 channel MPEG-2 audio encoder is designed which is a heterogeneous multiprocessor system; two hardwired logic blocks and one specialized DSP processor.

  • Hierarchical clustering methods have been proposed for more than sixty years and yet are used in various disciplines for relation observation and clustering purposes. In 1965, divisive hierarchical methods were proposed in biological sciences and have been used in various disciplines such as, and anthropology, ecology. Furthermore, recently hierarchical methods are being deployed in economy and energy studies. Unlike most clustering algorithms that require the number of clusters to be specified by the user, hierarchical clustering is well suited for situations where the number of clusters is unknown. This paper presents an overview of the hierarchical clustering algorithm. The dissimilarity measurements that can be utilized in hierarchical clustering algorithms are discussed. Further, the paper highlights the various and recent disciplines where the hierarchical clustering algorithms are employed.

  • This paper focuses on the stability analysis and stabilization for networked control system with neutral type of time-delay. By utilizing the delay partitioning idea, new stability criteria are proposed in terms of linear matrix inequalities(LMIs). These conditions are developed based on the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals. Based on the derived criteria, a sufficient condition for te solvability of this problem is obtained in terms of linear matrix inequality without decomposing the original system matrices. Also, it is shown that the proposed controller design method is general for networked control systems. Finally, illustrative examples are presented to show the applicability of the proposed method.

  • Regional rainfall quantile depends on the identification of hydrologically homogeneous regions. Various variables relevant to precipitation can be used to form regions. Since the type and number of variables may lead to improve the efficiency of partitioning, it is important to select those precipitation related variables, which represent most of the information from all candidate variables. Multivariate analysis techniques can be used for this purpose. Procrustes analysis which can decrease the dimension of variables based on their correlations, are applied in this study. 42 rainfall related variables are decreased into 21 ones by Procrustes analysis. Factor analysis is applied to those selected variables and then 5 factors are extracted. Fuzzy-c means technique classifies 68 stations into 6 regions. As a result, the GEV distributions are fitted to 6 regions while the lognormal and generalized logistic distributions are fitted to 5 regions. For the comparison purpose with previous results, rainfall quantiles based on generalized logistic distribution are estimated by at-site frequency analysis, index flood method, and regional shape estimation method.

  • Power peaking factors (PPF) is an important parameter for safe and efficient reactor operation. There are several methods to calculate the PPF at TRIGA research reactors such as MCNP and TRIGLAV codes. However, these methods are time-consuming and required high specifications of a computer system. To overcome these limitations, artificial intelligence was introduced for parameter prediction. Previous studies applied the neural network method to predict the PPF, but the publications using the ANFIS method are not well developed yet. In this paper, the prediction of PPF using the ANFIS was conducted. Two input variables, control rod position, and neutron flux were collected while the PPF was calculated using TRIGLAV code as the data output. These input-output datasets were used for ANFIS model generation, training, and testing. In this study, four ANFIS model with two types of input space partitioning methods shows good predictive performances with R2 values in the range of 96%-97%, reveals the strong relationship between the predicted and actual PPF values. The RMSE calculated also near zero. From this statistical analysis, it is proven that the ANFIS could predict the PPF accurately and can be used as an alternative method to develop a real-time monitoring system at TRIGA research reactors.
