  • Cluster analysis is based on partitioning a collection of data points into a number of clusters, where the data points in side a cluster have a certain degree of similarity and it is a fundamental process of data analysis. So, it has been playing an important role in solving many problems in pattern recognition and image processing. For these many clustering algorithms depending on distance criteria have been developed and fuzzy set theory has been introduced to reflect the description of real data, where boundaries might be fuzzy. If fuzzy cluster analysis is tomake a significant contribution to engineering applications, much more attention must be paid to fundamental questions of cluster validity problem which is how well it has identified the structure that is present in the data. Several validity functionals such as partition coefficient, claasification entropy and proportion exponent, have been used for measuring validity mathematically. But the issue of cluster validity involves complex aspects, it is difficult to measure it with one measuring function as the conventional study. In this paper, we propose four performance indices and the way to measure the quality of clustering formed by given learning strategy.

  • In this paper, selecting survey items was performed using three clustering methods: factor analysis, fuzzy c-Means algorithm and cluster analysis. The methods were used to extract key items from various questionnaires. The key item represents several similar questionnaires that form a cluster. Test survey was made of 120 items obtained from several surveys and it was answered by 646 students from 4 universities. Each item contains 6 choices. Applying the clustering method chose 25 items which is reduced from the original 120 items. The results yielded by three methods are very similar.

  • Fuzzy clustering has been playing an important role in solving many problems. Fuzzy c-Means(FCM) algorithm is most frequently used for fuzzy clustering. But some fixed point of FCM algorithm, know as Tucker's counter example, is not a reasonable solution. Moreover, FCM algorithm is impossible to perform the on-line learning since it is basically a batch learning scheme. This paper presents unsupervised learning networks as an attempt to improve shortcomings of the conventional clustering algorithm. This model integrates optimization function of FCM algorithm into unsupervised learning networks. The learning rule of the proposed scheme is a result of formal derivation based on the gradient descent procedure of a fuzzy objective function. Using the result of formal derivation, two algorithms of fuzzy cluster analysis, the batch learning version and on-line learning version, are devised. They are tested on several data sets and compared with FCM. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithms find out the reasonable solution on Tucker's counter example.

  • Data Mining is the process of finding hidden patterns inside a large data set. Cluster analysis has been used as a popular technique for data mining. It is a fundamental process of data analysis and it has been Playing an important role in solving many problems in pattern recognition and image processing. If fuzzy cluster analysis is to make a significant contribution to engineering applications, much more attention must be paid to fundamental decision on the number of clusters in data. It is related to cluster validity problem which is how well it has identified the structure that Is present in the data. In this paper, we design an adaptive data mining model using fuzzy performance measures. It discovers clusters through an unsupervised neural network model based on a fuzzy objective function and evaluates clustering results by a fuzzy performance measure. We also present the experimental results on newsgroup data. They show that the proposed model can be used as a document classifier.

  • Prototype based methods are commonly used in cluster analysis and the results may be highly dependent on the prototype used. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy clustering method that involves adaptively expanding convex polytopes. Thus, the dependency on the use of prototypes can be eliminated. The proposed method makes it possible to effectively represent an arbitrarily distributed data set without a priori knowledge of the number of clusters in the data set. Specifically, nonlinear membership functions are utilized to determine whether a new cluster is created or which vertex of the cluster should be expanded. For this, the membership function of a new vertex is assigned according to not only a distance measure between an incoming pattern vector and a current vertex, but also the amount how much the current vertex has been modified. Therefore, cluster expansion can be only allowed for one cluster per incoming pattern. Several experimental results are given to show the validity of our mehtod.

  • In this paper, we use three cluster algorithms (K-means, Self-Organizing Map, and Fuzzy K-means) to find proper graded stock market brokerage commission rates based on the cumulative transactions on both stock exchange market and HTS (Home Trading System). Stock trading investors for both modes are classified in terms of the total transaction as well as the corresponding mode of investment, respectively. Empirical analysis results indicated that fuzzy K-means cluster analysis is the best fit for the segmentation of customers of both transaction modes in terms of robustness. We then propose the rules for three grouping of customers based on decision tree and apply different brokerage commission to be 0.4%, 0.45%, and 0.5% for exchange market while 0.06%, 0.1%, 0.18% for HTS.

  • This paper explores a fundamental study of acquiring the users' KANSEI information regarding the recognition of shape models. Since there are many differences such as background differences and knowledge differences among users, they will produce different evaluations based on their KANSEI even when an identical shape model is presented. Cluster analysis is proved to be available for catching a group tendency and for constructing a mapping relation between a description of the shape model and the HANSEl database. In order to investigate an analogical relation and a mutual influence in our consciousness, first, we made a questionnaire that asked subjects to represent images having different colors and shape cones by using 4 pairs of adjectives (KANSEI words). Next, based on the cluster analysis of the questionnaire using a fuzzy set theory, we proposed a hypothesis showing how the analogical relation and the mutual influence work in our mind while viewing the shape models. Furthermore, how the properties of KANSEI depend on their descriptions was also investigated by virtue of the cluster analysis. This work will be valuable to construct a personal KANSEI database regarding the Shape Model Processing System.

  • This paper proposes a new document clustering method using PCA and fuzzy association. The proposed method can represent an inherent structure of document clusters better since it select the cluster label and terms of representing cluster by semantic features based on PCA. Also it can improve the quality of document clustering because the clustered documents by using fuzzy association values distinguish well dissimilar documents in clusters. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better performance than other document clustering methods.

  • In port management, the scale of facilities and port layouts are major factors characterizing the port, which influence port economics and productivities continuously through the port operation. Grouping ports in certain region by their characteristics could be used as the principal informations to establish national policy for port development or investment and also to analyze the competitiveness between ports. Currently Korean ports are divided into two groups such as the local port and the designated port containing foreign trade port and coastal port under the Korean port law. These divisions seem to be used for port administration as the matter of convenience but some qualitative grouping is needed for research of port problems. In this paper, 20 major Korean ports were clustered by the similar characteristics using Fuzzy C-Means and found to be classified 8 qualitative groups.

  • In this study, we evaluate financial performance of 21 domestic life insurers using SAW (simple additive weighting), ELECTREII, cluster analysis respectively, and suggest a hybrid approach of combining cluster analysis and ELECTREII to reclassify the life insurers into more meaningful groups according to their respective financial features. We also perform the sensitivity analysis employing ANOVA and Tukey's test to examine the robustness of ELECTREII, which would be influenced by decision maker's subjective preference parameters. Consequently, it is shown that ELECTREII turns out to be a flexible method providing decision makers with useful ranking Information especially under fuzzy decision making situation with incomparable alternatives, and hence it can serve as a complementary method to overcome the weakness of classical cluster analysis.
