  • This study examined the knowledge and understanding of integrative medicine in Korea, specifically conflicts between western and oriental medicine within Parallel (Dual) health care systems. Qualitative methodology using grounded theory guided semi-structured, in-depth interviews with Western Medical Doctors (W.M.D., n = 6), Oriental Medical Doctors (O.M.D., n = 5) and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners (T.C.M.P., n = 4). Thematic analysis was used to determine broad themes from the interviews. 15 professionals (W.M.D. (40%), O.M.D. (33%), T.C.M.P. (27%), 10 males (67%) and 5 females (33%), mean age 45) were interviewed, recorded, and transcribed. Thematic analysis revealed three key themes: systematic conflicts, integration and future directions. Subthemes of systematic conflicts included: credibility of Oriental Medicine, commercial imperatives, maintaining social standing of O.M.D., professional qualifications and lack structures supporting collaborative practice. Integration subthemes included lack of academic linkage and clarity for appropriate triage, opposing medical paradigms and limited social imperative. Future directions should include: social justification, guarantee of oriental medicine legitimacy, role of government and understanding of scientific evidence. To successfully integrate dual medical systems there is a need to address differences in social-environmental factors and perceptions of scientific understanding, as well as developing strong academic links in clinical practice.

  • Background : Mutual understanding between North and South Korea is essential for the engagement of Inter-Korean exchange and cooperation. However, the two Koreas have been divided for 70 years where Korean evolved differently within the two countries. This created a gap in the most basic foundation for mutual understanding, language. Fostering exchange and cooperation in the traditional medicine field requires a higher understanding of the specialized traditional medicine terminologies. Objectives : The purpose of this study is to formulate a future management plan for the "Comparative Terminology of Korean Medicine in South and North Korea," providing a foundation for standardizing Korean medicine terminology of the two Koreas. Methods : The study collected case studies of Korean medicine terminology management and standardization from government and international organization websites and documents. It provided future terminology management strategies based on this data. Results : The project for the standardization of Korean medicine terminology between North and South Korea can be divided into 4 stages according to the level of exchange and cooperation. The first step is to "establish a foundation for terminology standardization." The second step is "term comparison." If the exchanges and cooperation between North and South Korea, the third step will be to promote the "terminology standardization" project through Inter-Korean dialogue. Finally, after incorporating discussion on terminology standardization, the Inter-Korean Medicine Terminology can be published. Conclusions : This requires a system to support and facilitate Inter-Korean medicine exchange and cooperation. It is important to provide a support system that can provide results in a timely fashion by training relevant experts, collecting data and information, communicating with experts in the industry, academia and research institutes. This system will be able to ensure the continuity of the terminology standardization project.

  • Craniosynostosis has a varied clinical spectrum, ranging from isolated single suture involvement to multi-sutural fusions. Greater understanding of the pathogenesis of craniosynostosis has led to the development of practical treatment protocols. Three stages of growth have determined the approach to managing craniosynostosis : the early period, up to 12 months; the intermediate period, from 1 to 10 years; and the late period, beginning at 10 years. This review discusses current surgical management and future perspectives in craniosynostosis.

  • Understanding the future level of car ownership is essential in order to formulate various transportation policies. Despite its importance, however, a revies of literature indicates that previous studies treated car ownership as a linear function of income, GNP, degree of urbanization and etc. more detaild and accurate models of car ownership should be possible if information on major variables determining car ownership can be gathered. In this paper, three approaches have been chosen to develop mathematical models to predict future increase in car ownership in Korea. The three methords developed are : income distribution methords ; multiple regression models ; forecasting curves.

  • As the most sensitive radio interferometer ever operated in millimeter/submillimeter, the ALMA has opened a new window on extragalactic astronomy. Its superior resolution and sensitivity allow the community to study the gas kinematics of distant galaxies as well as the molecular gas properties of nearby galaxies in GMC scale, already in its early commissioning stage. Also the ALMA provides a great tool to probe the dust contents of extragalactic sources at all redshifts, which is important in understanding of galaxy formation and evolution history over cosmic time. In this presentation, I will review the ALMA capabilities with the emphasis on the extragalactic science. I will also revisit some highlights from the early science and discuss future perspectives.

  • For over 100 years, the tall building has largely advanced in technological innovation; however very little has been done in the terms of understanding the changing needs of the occupant needs and experience. The vast changes occurring due to technology and mobility demand reconsidering the tall building today and for the future. This paper will briefly survey the past eras of tall building design and will propose considerations and solutions for the future.

  • Intracranial vascular malformations typically encountered by pediatric neurosurgeons include arteriovenous malformations, vein of Galen malformations and cavernous malformations. While these remain amongst some of the most challenging lesions faced by patients and caregivers, the past decade has produced marked advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology of these conditions, with concomitant innovations in treatment. This article will highlight present and future perspectives relevant to these diseases, with a focus on an emerging approach utilizing disease-specific mutations to develop a novel taxonomy for these conditions.

  • This study aims at understanding in detail the process of constructing database from outsourced cataloging by investigating the actual conditions of university libraries nationwide regarding the outsourcing of cataloging processing that are being carried out in technical processing. And librarians' opinions about the cataloging inserted by outsourcing companies are considered and revised in depth. Also the degree of understanding of outsourcing company staffs regarding the cataloging is investigated then compared to that of library processing staffs and the difference is analyzed. Coupled with that, degree of understanding about CIP of National Library of Korea and functionality of reference cataloging of Korea Education & Research Information Service(KERIS) is investigated, thus the future directions to which technical processing of library should move forward are presented.

  • Understanding' the child has recently become one of the most important issues at the early childhood education. It comes from sympathizing with the opinion that understanding the child only by the characteristics of the developmental stages has a certain limit and it needs the deep understanding which can not be solved by the existing quantitative researching method only. This study suggests reading the child's culture from the point of the hermeneutical view as one method in order to understand the child wholistically. By this, it is possible to understand and to analyze the child deeply, our subject to understand, including the past, the current and the future of the child, and I hope that it will become one communicating way to share the life and the culture of the child.
