In current research work, the aerodynamics performance of a newly designed large flying V aircraft is numerically investigated. Three Flying V configurations, with V-angles of 50°, 70° and 90° that represent the minimum, moderate, and maximum configurations respectively, were designed and modeled to assess their aerodynamic performance at cruise flight conditions. The unstructured mesh was developed using ICEM CFD and Ansys-Fluent was used as an aerodynamic solver. The developed models were numerically simulated at cruise flight conditions with a Mach number equal to 0.15. K-ω SST turbulence model was chosen to account for flow turbulence. The authors performed steady flow simulations. The results obtained from the experimentation reveal that the maximum main angle configuration of 90° had the highest CLmax value of 0.46 compared to other configurations. While the drag coefficient remained the same for all three configurations, the 50° V-angle configuration achieved the maximum stall angle of 35°. With limited stall delay benefits, the flying V possesses no sufficient stability, due to the flow separation detected at whole elevon and winglet suction side areas at AoA equal and higher than 30°.

The hybrid composite material (Al/GFRP laminates) are applied to the fuselage and wing in a aircraft. Therefore, Al/GFRP laminates suffer from the cyclic bending moments. This study was to evaluate the effect of fiber stacking angle on the fatigue crack propagation and delamination behavior using the relationship between crack growth rate (da/dN) and stress intensity factor range (ΔK) in Al/GFRP laminates under cyclic bending moment. The variable delamination growth behavior in case of three different type of fiber orientations, i.e., [Al/O$_2$/Al], [Al/+45$_2$/Al] and [Al/90$_2$/Al] at the interface of Al layer and glass fiber layer was measured by ultrasonic C-scan images. As results of this study, It represent that the delamination shape should turns out to have more effective characteristics on the fiber stacking angle. The extension of the delamination zone in case of [Al/+45$_2$/Al] and [Al/90$_2$/Al] were not formed along the fatigue crack profile. The shape of delamination zone depend on fiber stacking angle and the variable type with the delamination contour decreased non-linearly toward the crack tip at the Al layer.

The effects of three fuselage head shapes and nonplanar ground surface on the aerodynamic characteristics of FAST fuselages are investigated using a boundary element method. Wind tunnel test is also performed to validate the present method and to identify the wall effect on the frictional drag which cannot be analyzed using the present method. It is found that the channel has an effect of increasing the lift of those investigated fuselages. The optimal head shape depends on the design conditions of the FAST and its guideway channel. Comparing the calculated induced drag with the measured total drag, it can be concluded that the profile drag is independent of the ground height. Thus, the present numerical method can be applied to the conceptual design of the high-speed ground transporters if only the profile drag of the vehicle in free flight is assumed to be known.

SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) technique for monitoring aircraft structural health and damage, EHM (Engine Health Monitoring) for monitoring aircraft engine performance, and APM (Application Performance Management) is used for each function. APMS (Airplane Performance Monitoring System) is a program that comprehensively applies these techniques to identify the difference between the performance manual provided by the manufacturer and the actual fuel mileage of the aircraft and reflect it in the flight plan. The main purpose of using APMS is to understand the performance of each aircraft, to plan and execute flights in an optimal way, and consequently to reduce fuel consumption. First, it is to check the fuel efficiency trend of each aircraft, check the correlation between the maintenance work performed and the fuel mileage, find the cause of the fuel mileage increase/decrease, and take appropriate measures in response. Second, it is to find the cause of fuel mileage degradation in detail by checking the trends by engine performance and fuselage drag effect. Third, the APMS is to be used in making maintenance work decisions. Through APMS, aircraft with below average fuel mileage are identified, the cause of fuel mileage degradation is identified, and appropriate corrective actions are determined. Fourth, APMS data is used to analyze the economic analysis of equipment installation investment. The cost can be easily calculated as the equipment installation cost, but the benefit is fuel efficiency improvement, and the only way to check this is the manufacturer's theory. Therefore, verifying the effect after installation and verifying the economic analysis is to secure the appropriateness of the investment. Through this, proper investment in fuel efficiency improvement equipment will be made, and fuel efficiency will be improved.

This paper is the second in a series and aims to build a high-fidelity mathematical model for a propeller-driven airplane using the propeller's aerodynamics and inertial models, as developed in the first paper. It focuses on aerodynamic models for the fuselage, the main wing, and the stabilizers under the influence of the wake trailed from the propeller. For this, application of the vortex lattice method is proposed to reflect the propeller's wake effect on those aerodynamic surfaces. By considering the maneuvering flight states and the flow field generated by the propeller wake, the induced velocity at any point on the aerodynamic surfaces can be computed for general flight conditions. Thus, strip theory is well suited to predict the distribution of air loads over wing components and the viscous flow effect can be duly considered using the 2D aerodynamic coefficients for the airfoils used in each wing. These approaches are implemented in building a high-fidelity mathematical model for a propeller-driven airplane. Flight dynamic analysis modules for the trim, linearization, and simulation analyses were developed using the proposed techniques. The flight test results for a series of maneuvering flights with a scaled model were used for comparison with those obtained using the flight dynamics analysis modules to validate the usefulness of the present approaches. The resulting good correlations between the two data sets demonstrate that the flight characteristics of the propeller-driven airplane can be analyzed effectively through the integrated framework with the propeller and airframe aerodynamic models proposed in this study.

Prediction methods for a rotor averaged inflow in forward flight are investigated in this study. The investigated methods are Drees linear inflow model, Mangler & Squire model and free vortex wake(FVW) method. Predictions have been performed for a four-blade rotor operating at three different advance ratios i.e. 0.15, 0.23 and 0.30, at which experimental data are available. According to results, Drees model has a limitation for the inflow non-uniformity prediction due to an inherent linear characteristics. Mangler & Squire model has a reasonable accuracy except the disk edge region. KARI FVW method has very good accuracy and has better accuracy than the other FVW method especially in inboard region. However, there are some discrepancies in retreating side due to the dynamic stall effect and in near hub region due to the fuselage upwash effect.
Numerical simulations were performed to study the stall characteristics of turboprop aircraft. Stall characteristics were qualitatively investigated using the computational results of various configurations based on the combinations of propeller and high lift device. For the analysis of stall characteristics, three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model was used and the relative motion between propeller and wing was simulated using sliding mesh technique. For the cruise configurations, major flow separation was occurred at the fuselage/wing fairing and the separation was reduced under propeller slipstream condition. For the high lift device configuration without propeller, major flow separation was occurred at the outboard side of nacelle. With rotating propeller, early stall onset due to low relative velocity and high effective angle of attack was observed on the outboard wing section. Regarding rotating direction of propeller, inboard-down direction was preferred due to the stall delay effect of propeller slipstream.

Owing to the rapid development of infrared guided weapon systems, the threat to aircraft survivability is constantly increasing, and research on infrared stealth technologies are being conducted to ensure aircraft survival. In this study, we analyze the minimum infrared signature of an aircraft according to its flight altitude by considering the characteristics of infrared guided missiles, which detect the contrast signature between the aircraft and background. We conducted computational fluid dynamics simulations for the convective coefficient, and heat transfer simulations were performed considering convection, conduction, and radiation for flight conditions. Thus, we obtained the surface temperature distribution of the aircraft and analyzed the aircraft infrared signature based on the flow characteristics around it. Furthermore, the optimum emissivity for the minimum infrared signature was derived, and the effect of the infrared signature was analyzed when this optimum emissivity was applied to the fuselage surface for each flight condition.
In this paper, conceptual structural design of the main wing for a small scale WIG(Wing in Ground Effect) among high speed ship projects, which will be a high speed maritime transportation system for the next generation in Rep. of Korea, was performed. The Carbon/Epoxy material was selected for the major structure, and the skin-spar with a foam sandwich structural type was adopted for improvement of lightness and structural stability. As a design procedure for the present study, firstly the design load was estimated through the critical flight load case study, and then flanges of the front and rear spars from major bending loads and the skin and the spar webs from shear loads were preliminarily sized using the netting rule and the rule of mixture. Stress analysis was performed by a commercial FEA code, NASTRAN. From the stress analysis results for the first designed wing structure, it was confirmed that the upper skin between the front spar and the rear spar was unstable fer the buckling. Therefore in order to solve this problem, a middle spar and the foam sandwich type structure at the skin and the web were added. After design modification, the structural safety and stability for the final design feature was confirmed. In addition to this, the insert bolt type structure with eight high strength bolts to fix the wing structure to the fuselage was adopted for easy assembly and removal as well as in consideration of more than 20 years fatigue life.

Aluminum 5052/Aramid Fiber Reinforced Plastic(Al5052/AFRP) laminates are applied to the fuselage-wing intersection. The Al5052/AFRP laminates suffer from the cyclic bending moment of variable amplitude during the service. Therefore, the influence of cyclic bending moment on the delamination and the fatigue crack propagation behavior in Al5052/AFRP laminate was investigated in this study. Al5052/AFRP laminate composite consists of three thin sheets of Al5052 and two layers of unidirectional aramid fibers. The cyclic bending moment fatigue tests were performed with five different levels of bending moment. The shape and size of the delamination zone formed along the fatigue crack between Al5052 sheet and aramid fiber-adhesive layer were measured by an ultrasonic C-scan. The relationships between da/dN and ΔK, between the cyclic bending moment and the delamination zone size, and between the fiber bridging mechanism and the delamination zone were studied. Fiber failures were not observed in the delamination zone in this study. It represents that the fiber bridging modification factor should turn out to increase and that the fatigue crack growth rate should decrease. The shape of delamination zone turns out to be semi-elliptic with the contour decreased non-linearly toward the crack tip.
