  • The thirteen commercial insecticides to Lycoriella mali were investigated on their insecticidal activities and mycelial growth of two Letinula edodes strains. For the adults, insecticides showing over 95% insecticidal activity were chlorpyrifos-methyl, fenthion, fenitrothion, benfuracarb, furathiocarb and deltamethrin. For tile larvae, diflubenzuron and cyromazine showed over 90% insecticidal activity. Fenthion, benfuracarb, furathiocarb, deltamethrin, diflubenzuron and cyromazine did not affect the mycelial growth of L. edodes strain, in Imhyup 1 variety. And deltamethrin, diflubenzuron and cyromazine did not affect that in Sanlim-5. Insecticides showing over 80% residual effect for 14 days were benfuracarb to the adults and diflubenzuron and cyromazine to the larvae. Control effect of furathiocarb, fenthion, benfuracarb, deltamethrin, diflubenzuron and cyromazine against larvae of Lycoriella mali showed 90% ten days after application under sawdust cultivation. Among them, benfuracarb, fenthion and furathiocarb revealed excellent control effect against adults. These results indicate that benfuracarb, fenthion, and furathiocarb can be used for the control of Lycoriella mali in the field. However, further studies are needed on the effect of insecticides treatment oil fruit-body yield and chemical residue in the mushroom tissues.

  • Three aminothio derivatives of carbofuran including carbosulfan, furathiocarb and benfuracarb were subjected to the degradation study in soils to investigate how fast and efficiently carbofuran would be evolved from them. Carbofuran was rapidly released from the derivatives in soils as the carbamoyl nitrogen-sulfur bond cleaved. Their degradation rates in soils, with half-lives of $23{\sim}68$ hours, were largely affected by structures of aminothio moieties and soil moisture conditions. Conversion rates into carbofuran ranged from 64 to 84% in soils on the basis of parent compounds 5 days after treatment. Application of aminothio derivatives led to less drastic increase in the carbofuran level in soils than when carbofuran was applied as such, and hence this might result in lower side effects in situ.

  • Susceptibility of Curculio sikkimensis adults to 39 commercial insecticides were evaluated by body dipping method, Among them sixteen insecticides of chlorpyrifos, fenitrothion, fiponil, phenthoate, benfuracarb, thiodicaib, carbosulfan, bifenthrin, cypermethrin, $\lambda$-cyhalothrin, deltamethrin, clothianidin, acetamiprid+diflubenzuron, etofenpox+diazinon, esfenvalerate+fenitrothion and furathiocarb +diflubenzuron showed 100% mortality. Insecticides with over 80% residual effect at 1 day after treatment were phenthoate, benfuracarb and thiodicarb (95.0, 82.5, and 85.0%, respectively). However, after that, it was dropped rapidly. Other insecticides showed low residual effect. In the control efficacy test on C. sikkimensis, insecticides with over 90% control values at 1 day after treatment were phenthoate, thiodicarb, fipronil, acetamiprid+bifenthrin and furathiocarb+diflubenzuron. However, all insecticides from 2 days after treatment were over 90%.

  • Mixture study of bifenthrin and prothiofos was conducted to control insecticide resistant diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella, which had shown 581, 18, 19, 11 fold resistance to fenvalerate, cypermethrin, furathiocarb, and prothiofos in Chinju strain, respectively and 38 and 9 fold resistance to fenvalerate and furathiocarb in Seosang strain, respectively. Optimal mixture ratios of bifenthrin and prothiofos was selected against Seosang strain of DBM by leaf dipping method in laboratory and by field test. Maximum co-toxicity coefficient by dipping method was shown at a ratio of 1:50 mixture of bifenthrin 1EC and prothiofos 50EC in active ingredient(a.i.) by 243.2 and then suddenly decreased. The mixed formulation from the dipping test was examined at the cabbage field of Seosang, Hamyang. Although insecticides were reduced to half, control efficacy was similar to farmer's conventional method. In addition, the mixture combination was also more effective against Chinju DBM population which had very high level of resistance to several representative insecticides. Mixture methods of insecticides will be effective countermeasures to the resistance problem of pests.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the toxicities of 38 registered insecticides to the sweetpotato whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum). Insecticide activities were evaluated by testing systemic action and residual effect in the laboratory, and control efficacy in the greenhouse. All experiments were tested at the recommended concentration(ppm) of each insecticides. Insect growth regulators (IGRs), only pyriproxyfen showed over 90% of ovicidal effect. The insecticides that showed over 90% of larvicidal activity oil 3rd nymphal instars were abamectin, acetamiprid, chlorpyrifos-methyl, imidacloprid, pyripoxyfen, and acetamiprid+ethofenprox. Insecticides with 100% adulticidal activity were abamectin, acephate, acetamiprid, benfurcarb, bifenthrin, furathiocarb, endosulfan, fenitrothion, imidacloprid, phenthoate, pymetrozine, acetamiprid + ethofenprox, ethofenprox + diazinon, furathiocarb + difluberlzuron, and triazamate+${\alpha}$-cypermethrin. Abamectin, acetamiprid, imidacloprid, pyriproxyfen, and acetamiprid + ethofenpox showed both residual effect and systemic activity. In tile control efficacy test on B. tabaci, 90% control values were obtained at 11th day after treatment of the insecticides including abamectin, acetamiprid, imidacloprid, pyripoxyfen and acetamiprid + ethofenprox. These results indicate that abamectin, acetamiprid, imidacloprid, pyriproxyfen and acetamiprid + ethofenprox can be used for tile control of B. tabaci in field.

  • In order to establish a whitefly control system using conventional groups of insecticide(carbamate, organophosphorus and pyrethroid insecticides), three alternative application methods were designed on the medium growth stage of cucumber. To discriminate the effectiveness of these sequences observed were the residual activity of insecticides, frequency of insecticide applications, residue of insecticides in cucumber leaves, development of insecticide resistance in whitefly, and yield of fruits. Spraying furathiocarb, a carbamate insecticide, was very effective in reducing the frequency of application for the control of white flies. The effectiveness of furathiocarb was enhanced by the potentiation process to carbofuran, the long residual activity, and the lower development rate of insecticide resistance. Methion, an organophosphorus insecticide, did not show resistance development after successive use but resulted in short residual activity. However, other organophosphates, profenofos and phenthoate, lost their activity by the resistance development. Decreasing activity was common to pyrethroids, deltamethrin and zetacypermethrin due to resistance. From these results it could be drawn a conclusion that furathiocarb, a carbamate insecticide, was the most desirable among conventional insecticide groups for the management of greenhouse whitefly population on the cucumber. To prevent an outbreak of the insect pest by various cause, it was recommended to choose acetamiprid, a nicotinoid, which showed very good control efficacy to the resistance insects to conventional insecticides.

  • The activities against Frankliniella occidentalis adults collected at rose greenhouse of 40 commerical insecticides were investigated. Among them 9 insecticides showed over 80% mortality to the adults; chlorfenapyr, chlorpyrifos- methyl, emamectin benzoate, fenthion, fipronil, phenthoate, spinosad, chlorpyrifos+diflubenzuron and furathiocarb+diflubenzuron. Susceptibility of field populations collected from greenhouse rose at 5 locations in 2001 was evaluated against the 9 insecticides selected. There was considerable difference in susceptibility depending on the treated insecticides and the regions from which the populations were collected. Goyang and Gimhae populations showed lower $LC_{50}$(ppm) values then Imsil, Jincheon and Gaangjin populations to all the tested insecticides. The adults of all field populations showed lower $LC_{50}$ values less than 1 ppm to emamectin benzoate, fipronil and spinosad. From these results, we could recommend 5 insecticides, such as emamectin benzoate, fipronil, spinosad, chlorpyrifos+diflubenzuron and furathiocarb+diflubenzuron as effective ones to control the Frankliniella occidentalis field populations.

  • Farmers are generally expressed to pesticides through mixing loding, application activity and harvesting of crop after application of pesticides. The present work investigated the exposure and risk of furathiocarb to workers when harvesting of cucumber was carried out in green house after application of furathiocarb EC. Glove was used for the hand exposure assessment, socks for foot and dermal patches for the other parts of body. Personal air monitor equipped with a XAD-2 resin was used for the respiratory exposure assessment. During the harvest of cucumber in green house, the initial rate of potential dermal exposure (Day 1) for methidathion was 1.3 mg/hr. The major exposure parts were hand $(78\~83\%),\;thigh\;(5\~7\%)$ and arms $(6\~9\%)$ during 3 days' harvest. No exposure was detected from the respiratory monitoring. For risk assessment, the potential dermal exposure (PDE), the absorbable quantity of exposure (AQE) and the margin of safety (MOS) and margin of exposure (MOE) were calculated. In risk assessment of harvester exposure for 7days, all MOS was > 1 and MOE was > 100 indicating that possibility of risk was little.

  • Insecticidal activity of 33 registered insecticides was tested against last nymphal instars and adults of ussur brown katydid (Paratlanticus ussuriensis). All experiments were tested at the recommended concentration of each insecticides by producer. Acephate, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, EPN and fenitrothion which were organophates, and a mixture combined with chlorpyrifos+${\alpha}$-cypemethrin showed 100% mortality of P. ussuriensis. But fipronil showed only 100% mortality in leaf-dipping method. Carbamates insecticidal groups, benfuracarb and furathiocarb were showed over 80% and phenthoate was $60{\sim}80%$ in mortality of P. ussuriensis. Among the mixture, etofenprox+diazinon and esfenvalerate+fenitrothion were showed 60-80% against last nymphal instars of P. ussuriensis. Otherwise, acephate, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, EPN and fenitrothion were showed 100% mortality of P. ussuriensis within only 24 hours after treatment, but there was no effective after then in residual tests with leaves.
