Sawdust, produced as an wood by-product, is usable biomass as liquid fuels if decomposed to monomer unit, because the chemical structure are similar to high octane materials found in gasoline. In this study, parameters of thermochemical degradation by acetone-solvolysis reaction of sawdust such as the effect of reaction temperature, reaction time and type of solvent on conversion yield and degradation products were investigated. The liquid products by acetone-solvolysis from sawdust produced various kind of ketone, phenol and furan compounds. The optimum sawdust conversion was observed to be 88.7% at $350^{\circ}C$, 40min. Combustion heating value of liquid products from thermochemical conversion processes was as high as 7,824 cal/g. The energy yield and mass yield in acetone-solvolysis of sawdust was 60.8% and 36.4 g-oil/100g-sawdust after 40 min of reaction at $350^{\circ}C$, respectively. The major components of the acetone-solvolysis products, that could be used as liquid fuel, were 4-methyl-3-pentene-2-one, 1,3,5-trimethylbezene, 2,6-dimethyl-2,5-heptadiene-4-one, 3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one as ketone compounds.

Garlic oleoresins were made by extracting with four solvents of methanol, methyl acetate hexane and acetone from chopped garlic, respectively, and the volatile compounds of each extract were separated by gas chromatography installed with polar (supelcowax-10$^{TM}$) and nonpolar (HP-5) capillary columns, respectively, and identified by matching mass data of mass selective detector and Kovat\`s retention index with references. The numbers of the volatile compounds identified the garlic oleoresin by polar and nonpolar columns from in garlic oleoresins were 41 and 32, respectively. In polar column, 13 pyrans, 11 sulfur-containing compounds 6 furans 2 alcohols and 2 heterocyclic compounds were identified. In nonpolar column, 11 sulfur-containing compounds 5 acids 3 furans and eugenol were identified. The major sulfur-containing compounds identified from the oleoresins were 3, 3'-thiobis-1-propene, methyl 2-propenyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, di-2-prnpenyl-trisulfide, 2-thiophenecarboxylic acid. The amount of these sulfur-containing compounds isolated from the oleresins were more abundant in polar column than in nonpolar column. The most efficient solvent for extracting volatile compounds of garlic was methanol but the most useful solvent for extracting sulfur-containing compounds was methyl acetate of less polarity.y.
To measure the levels of dioxins in food selling at local markets, meat was analyzed by high resolution gas chromatography/high resolution ass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS). The food samples were obtained from 5 large cities of Seoul, Chunchon, Daejon, Kwangju and Busan in Korea. All the samples were minced and extracted with Soxhlet extractor for 18 hours. After extraction, extracts were cleaned up by sulfuric acid impregnated silica gel, purified on a series of silica gel, alumina, carbon column chromatography and then analyzed by HRGC/HRMS. The contaminated levels were calculated as the TEQs by multiplying with the corresponding WHO-TEFs for each congeners. The overall recoveries were ranged from 80% to 153% and the limit of detection was about 0.01 ppt at S/N>3. The levels of PCDD/Fs for beef, pork and chicken were 0.018, 0.008 and <0.001 pgTEQ/g, respectively. In addition, the levels of non-ortho-co-planar PCBs for beef, pork and chicken were 0.008, 0.002 and 0.001 pgTEQ/g, respectively. Among food samples analyzed, chicken showed the lowest level of dioxin-like compounds. Regarding congener pattern, OCDD and PCB #77 were the highest contributing congeners.

This study was conducted to investigated the change of volatile flavor components of Cassia tora seeds during roasting treatments. The flavor components of Cassia tora seeds were analyzed by gas chromatography(GC) and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC/MS). Among the flavor compounds collected by simultaneous steam distillation and extraction(SDE) method, 38 components were separated and identified. They consisted of 3 pyrazines, 4 pyrroles or pyridine, 4 alcohols, 11 aldehydes or ketones, 9 furans or phenols and 7 others. The flavor compounds collected from unroasted Cassia tora seeds were 7 components. During roasting process, many other flavor components were formed and increased in their contents. The contents of pyrazines and furans were highest and increased conspicuously, whereas, the contents of aldehydes, ketones, alcohols and pyridines were not increased significantly.
Anticarcinogenic activity of Moutan radix for mouse ascites cancer induced by mouse Sarcoma 180 (S-180) cells was investigated. Methanol extract of Moutan radix including other folk medicinal plants (Taxus cuspidata, Curcuma longa, Artemisia capillaris, Ligrstri fructus, and Liriope platyphylla) used to remedy or cure many chronic human diseases like cancer was fractionated into hexane, chloroform ($CHCl_3$), ethylacetate (EtOAc), and butanol (BuOH) fractions. Anticarcinogenic activity of the fractions, exhibited a strong cytotoxicity for L1210 and S-180 cells, was examined for mouse ascites cancer induced by S-180 cells. Male ICR mice (7 mice/treatment, $5{\sim}6$ weeks of age, $23{\pm}1\;g$ were injected i.p. with S-180 cells ($1{\times}10^{7}\;cell/1\;ml$ PBS). One day later, each mouse was given 0.1 ml of 10% DMSO containing sample ($30\;{\mu}g/g$ body weight) every day for 10 consecutive days. Control mice were only given 0.1ml S-180 cells and 0.1 ml 10% DMSO. Mice treated with EtOAc fraction of Moutan radix showed 28.7 days of life, which is 167% of control mice's life. Based on the dose-dependant experiment mice treated with $30\;{\mu}g$ showed longer life relative to mice treated with ootherr doses (5, 15, $60\;{\mu}g$), and mice treated with $60\;{\mu}g$ exhibited toxic symptoms. Body weight of mice treated with Moutan radix was significantly reduced relative to that of control mice (p<0.05). GC-MS analysis in conjunction with silica-gel column chromatography revealed that the EtOAc fraction contained 2-methoxylphenol, benzoic acid, 1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)ethanone, 8-methyl-2,4(1H,3H)pteridinedione and 2,5-furan-dicarboxylic dimethyl ester as regards to the anticarcinogenic property of the EtOAc fraction. These results suggest that Moutan radix might be included as an anticarcinogenic medicinal plant for treatment of ascites cancer.

A rapid method using HPLC-MS/MS has been developed for quantitative determination of the metabolites of nitrofurans, namely 3-amino-2-oxazolidone (AOZ), 5-morpholinomethyl-3-amino-2-oxazolidinone (AMOZ), 1-ammino-hydantoin (AHD) and semicarbazide (SEM) in loach. The extraction procedure was founded on simultaneous acidic hydrolysis and derivatization using 2-nitrobenzaldehyde (2-NBA) for 1 hour at $50^{\circ}C$, followed by purification with liquid-liquid extraction. Recovery was evaluated by spiking standards into blank samples at three levels (0.5, 1.0 and $2.0{\mu}g/kg$), and the mean recovery was 75.1-108.1%. Precision values expressed as the relative standard deviation (%RSD) were ${\leq}8.7%$ and ${\leq}8.5%$ for intra-day and inter-day precision, respectively. Linearity was studied in the range of $0.2-20{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBAOZ, $0.8-20{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBAMOZ, $0.2-20{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBAHD, and $0.1-20{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBSEM, and the obtained coefficient correlations (r) were ${\geq}0.99$ for all compounds. Limits of detection (LODs) for the derivatized nitrofuran metabolites were established at $0.06{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBAOZ, $0.24{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBAMOZ, $0.06{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBAHD, and $0.03{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBSEM. Limits of quantification (LOQs) were established at $0.2{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBAOZ, $0.8{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBAMOZ, $0.2{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBAHD, and $0.1{\mu}g/Kg$ for NBSEM. This simplified rapid method for reducing the derivatization and hydrolysis times can be applied to the determination of nitro-furan residues in loach.

Rice that the half of population in the world eats as a staple food is mostly produced and consumed in Asia. However, its consumption is nowadays decreasing mainly due to diet diversity. Accordingly, some attempts are in demand to enhance the utilization of rice. In this study, profiling of volatile and non-volatile flavor components in rice pastes obtained by ${\alpha}$-amylase was performed and compared according to nine different rice cultivars domestically cultivated in Korea using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined by solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography-time of flight-mass spectrometry after a derivatization, respectively. In total, 46 volatile compounds identified included 6 alcohols, 6 aldehydes, 4 esters, 4 furan derivatives, 4 ketones, 1 acid, 1 sulfur-containing compound, 7 hydrocarbons, 5 aromatics and 8 terpenes. The non-volatile flavor components found were composed of 12 amino acids, 6 sugars and 4 sugar alcohols. In principal component analysis, rice paste samples could be discriminated according to cultivars on the score plots of volatile and non-volatile flavor compounds. In particular, some volatile compounds such as pentanal and 4,7-dimethylundecane could contribute to distinguish Senong 17 white and Senong 17 brown, whereas ethanol, 6-methylhep-5-en-2-one, and tridecane could be highly related to the discrimination of Iipum from other cultivars. Among non-volatile compounds, some amino acids such as glycine, serine and ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid and some sugars such as sucrose and fructose were mainly responsible for the discrimination of Danmi from the other cultivars. On the other hand, galactose, arabitol and mannose were more closely related to Senong 17 white than Senong 17 brown.
