  • Fuzzy techniques are applied to the positioning of an elastic beam. The advantage is that the system model is not needed. A simple fuzzy friction compensator is also used. The final position is achieved within 3/2 the period of the fundamental mode. A fuzzy set of rules is applied for large-angle positioning, with adaptations that reduce the effects of shock. In this case, the final position is achieved within two fundamental periods. There is typically some final error attributed to the dry friction.

  • The paper deals with a theoretical study on the radial vibration of cylindrical piezoelectric transducers. The differential equations of piezoelectric radial motion have been derived in terms of the radial displacement and electrical potential. Applying mechanical and electrical boundary conditions has yielded the characteristic equations of natural vibration. Numerical results of the fundamental natural frequency have been compared with experimental observations for the transducers of several sizes, and have shown a good agreement.

  • We report on comparative results obtained from harmonically mode-locked laser operations of ring-type and figure-of-eight(F8) type erbium-doped fiber lasers by using a directional-coupler type electro-optic modulator as an active mode-locker. The mode-locked and transform-limited pulses of 10.6 ps width were obtained at harmonics of the fundamental cavity frequency with the F8 type laser while mode-locked laser pulses greater than 15 ps were achieved with the ring type laser.

  • A new nonlinear static analysis method, Effective Modal Pushover Analysis (EMPA) which can evaluate earthquake responses such as story drift and plastic rotation of plastic hinges addressing higher mode effects was developed. Unlike existing nonlinear static procedure based on properties of fundamental vibration mode, the EMPA performs nonlinear static analysis using multiple effective modes constructed by direct combination of natural vibration modes. Therefore higher mode effects can be efficiently considered. In the present study, procedures of the EPMA evaluating inelastic earthquake responese were established and the results were verified by nonlinear time history analysis. The EMPA can be applied to seismic evaluation of high-rise buildings and irregular buildings where higher mode effects become conspicuous.

  • The attenuation of the fundamental non-torsional modes that propagate down buried steel water pipes has been studied. The mode shapes, mode attenuation due to leakage into the surrounding medium and the scattering of the modes as they interact with pipe joints and fittings have been investigated. In the low frequency region the mode predicted to dominate over significant propagation distances approximates a plane wave in the water within pipe. The established acoustic technique used to locate leaks in buried steel water pipes assumes that leak noise propagates as a single non-dispersive mode at a velocity related to the low frequency asymptote of this water borne mode.

  • To augment weakly damped lag mode stability of a hingeless helicopter rotor blade in hover, piezoelectric shunt with a resistor and an inductor circuits for passive damping has been studied. A shunted piezoceramics bonded to a flexure of rotor blade converts mechanical strain energy to electrical charge energy which is dissipated through the resistor in the R-L series shunt circuit. Because the fundamental lag mode frequency of a soft-in-plane hingeless helicopter rotor blade is generally about 0.7/rev, the design frequency of the blade system with flexure sets to be so. Experimentally, the measured lag mode frequency is 0.7227/rev under the short circuit condition. Therefore the suppression mode of this passive damping vibration absorber is adjusted to 0.7227/rev. As a result of damping enhancement using passive control, the passive damper which consists of a piezoelectric material and shunt circuits has a stabilizing effect on inherently weakly damped lag mode of the rotor blades, at the optimum tuning and resistor condition.

  • Particle displacement distributions of the fundamental thickness shear vibration mode and overtone modes in an energy-trapped single resonator and an energy-trapped double acoustically coupled filter were calculated. The effects of the width of a pair of partial eletrodes and the magnitude of the plate back of the resonator on the particle displacement distributions of its symmetric vibration mode and anti-symmetric vibration mode were investigated. And the effects of the width of a pair of partial eletrodes, the width of the gap between two pairs of partial electrodes and the magnitude of the plate back of the filter on the particle displacement distributions of its symmetric vibration mode and anti-symmetric vibration mode were investigated.

  • We propose a novel active fiber design for selectively generating cylindrical vector beams (CVBs) or cylindrical vector modes (CVMs) which can be applied to conventional fiber lasers. A fiber is designed to have a ring-shaped core refractive index profile which can lead to the best overlap between the active dopant distribution profile and the lowest-order CVM (LCVM) field profile. Therefore, the overlap factor (OVF) of the LCVM becomes even higher than that of the fundamental mode. We emphasize that this condition cannot be satisfied by a conventional step-index core fiber (SICF) but by the ring-doped core fiber (RDCF). Because the lasing threshold is inversely proportional to the OVF, the LCVM can predominantly be stimulated even without going through special procedures to impose extra loss mechanisms to the fundamental mode. We numerically verify that the OVF of the LCVM with the doped ions can significantly exceed that of the fundamental mode if the proposed fiber design is applied. In addition, an RDCF of the proposed fiber design can also operate in a regime containing no higher-order modes besides the LCVM, so that it can selectively and efficiently generate the LCVM without being disrupted by the parasitic lasing of the higher-order modes. We highlight that an optimized RDCF can lead to a >30 % higher OVF ratio than a SICF having the same doped area. The proposed model is expected to be useful for enhancing the efficiency of generating CVBs in an all-fiber format.

  • The conventional graphical representation of the instantaneous compensation power flow for single-phase active power filters(APFs) simply represents the active power flow and the reactive power flow which flowing between the power source and the active filter / the load. But, this method does not provide the information about the rectification mode and the compensation mode of APFs, especially, the loss for each mode was not considered at all. This is very important to understand the compensation operation characteristics of APFs. Therefore, this paper proposes the graphical representation of the instantaneous compensation power flow for single-phase APFs considering the instantaneous rectification mode and the instantaneous inversion mode. Three cases are verified in this paper - without compensation, with compensation of the active power 'p' and the fundamental reactive power 'q', and with compensation of only the distorted power 'h'. To ensure the validity of the proposed approach, PSIM simulation is achieved. As a result, we could confirm that the proposed approach was easy to explain the instantaneous compensation power flow considering the instantaneous rectification mode and the instantaneous inversion mode of APFs, also, Total Harmonic Distortion(THD)/Power Factor (P.F) and Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) analysis were compared for each case.
